Dude fucking thank you! My gosh I haven't been able to make it to class for personal reasons. But you just fixed the problem with my side kick I was leaning my torso forward round house style. Gosh thanks so much! Btw your an amazing kicker props! I hope to get that kinda power and speed myself!
@jaqdudley its impossible for me to kick knife edge and hard for me to kick flat foot cause the ball of my foot sticks out, its anoying, I just have to hope I get lucky and hit with the heel, and the ball of the foot will do some damage I guess? Kwonkicker help!
@FloridaGar94 i found an exercise to help develop the knife edge thing. you sit down or lay down and stick your foot out in a knife edge position. make sure your body is facing foward.
@FloridaGar94 While standing, roll one foot over until just the outside edge is on the floor. While keeping that position bend your knee slightly and then pull all but your heal straight off the foor without letting the foot roll back to neutral. Repeat until it is easy, then do your entire lift and kick with that foot position (slow). Also, do a body hang stretch and pull just your big toes up off the ground (all others down), that builds the muscles you need for the foot position.
Kwon Kicker I have a problem when I do a side kick I happen to have trouble exposing the heel, sometimes when i strike i hit with the ball of the foot, i do pull my toes back, is this common,
yes, unlike most mma fighters who only do round kicks and push kicks, he makes use of other kicks, side kick, spining side kick, and spnning hook kick,
@xs0ld13rx If he doesn't reply, I'm in a taekwondo class and it's important to know that your leg doesn't go out as much 'sideways" as it does backwards. you have to make sure when you kick to pivot your hip and chest to turn the opposite way. You keep doing that stationary and you'll really get the "feel" for it. If you get that try it moving while focusing on the pivot less than the kick and, like the stationary, it'll come naturally.
@Lailahaillillah Thank you for the reply! Could you explain to me the technique of chambering? I would like to practice kicks that I could use in real life scenarios. I would like to practice chambering my kicks so it would become second nature.
@xs0ld13rx For this you lift your knee (keeping your foot drawn so your leg is like a v shape) and keeping it there is chambered. For a side kick you have it chambered, your knee straight up in front of you, and you extend it to your side but while you're doing it, take your torso and turn facing downwards the opposite way of the kick. your ground foot will pivot with your top and your hip should move so your foot goes backwards relative to your hip and because you twist the kick goes sideways
@mrflyingkicker, if you feel a "flicking" sensation in your hip (as well as down the outside portion of your leg) it could be you need to stretch your I.T. band (iliotibial band)
My back feels stiff on the side of the obliques being used when I side kick. I'm trying to do it, but my chamber and the execution feels stiff regardless of the fact that I am pretty flexible. My side kick sucks, and I would like it not too.
@MrFlyingKicker if you are kicking off your right leg and feeling the pain in your left leg then you are either leaning back too far, or not enough, try regulate this or try stretching and loosening up your joints before practicing this kick by rotating your entire leg from the hip joint for about 30 seconds each leg, in both directions.
@MrFlyingKicker I mean rotating all the joints in your leg to make then loose and more used to the motion.
start by rotating your foot in circles for about 20 seconds, then 20 seconds back the other way, then same with the knee and then with your hip joints.
i cant get the foot positioning right :/ whenever i do it normally i can get my foot knife edges, but when i do a high side kick it jst keeps going flat + if i ever use it on a punch bag it always jst becomes flat on impact :/
@strarwarsfreak101 You can stay standing and throw the kick and still knock them back. The kick Kwonkicker is using is called a Walking Side Kick. You can practice this by getting into fighting position, moving your back leg behind your front making a cross, chamber the front leg up and then throw the kick. Get the motion right and you can do it like KK. At 0:21 Kwonkicker does this perfectly.
The power comes from the body twisting the hips pushing all your weight into the leg.
kwonkicker is knife edging the foot really that important? i understand that you concentrate the power over a smaller surface, but when i make contact with knife edging it i feel like my ankle is about to break
hey knwokicker, what is the best time to use the stepping side kick? like what is the best position for your opponent, or is there any combos or fakes that builds up to the kick?
Essentially what I am asking are tutorials for the adaptation of Taekwondo to your kickboxing/ MMA. I've watched your fight and Cyrus Washington's and do see a lot of Taekwondo in there. Maybe you can explain your reasoning for certain kicks or combos you use and how you set them up. You could even collaborate with Cyrus Washington and put on a Taekwondo kickboxing clinic.
Like I said, I've been trying this myself for a year and I'd be glad to also put in some input.
You know what? I've been adapting my Taekwondo to kickboxing(MMA Muay thai) and I find that if you throw lots of back leg roundhouses, they'll expect that roundhouse when you rotate your hips and start your back leg kick.
What my opponents often did was cover their faces and I would instead chamber and side kick them in their stomach HARD.
Are there moves like this that you know can help in sparring with a kickboxer? Maybe you can make a video? I'd be glad to explain some more.
I have a question. Is a person at a normal/traditional taekwondo school learning what you are teaching here, or is this a specialized form of taekwondo? (i want to learn your style)

@jogopocomedia You get more power out of a sudden, explosive movement when you forcefully expel breath from your lungs at the same time. I think it has something to do with the contraction of the diaphragm. It also probably helps to regulate your breathing during the adrenaline rush in a combat situation.
Have you seen the recent video of Joe Rogan teaching Georges St. Pierre how to do a "turning sidekick" ? He advocates NOT turning the knee to the floor and making a pure "back kick" (some call "mule" kick) This is not how I learned, yet his technique is ferocious. He does recommend for lower targets, not head range. I have always found turning sidekicks to be lame and back kicks to be superior. I think its the chambering that makes either one successful. your thoughts?
I have a question, why is your body a bit turned facing the back of the room, My Master says lean back and keep your body side ways, What you did looked a bit like a Back kick, I;m not trying to insult your techniques or anything
@iamroxasowns13 That's how a modern side kick is done. It is to keep the front of your torso (chest, core and stomach) out of range of a counterattack, specifically a back kick or spin hook. If your torso is still facing side ways or forward during the kick, your opponent can successfully counter attack you with his own kick during your side kick.
I'm glad you also chose an Art that teaches to be aggressive, and calm. Taekwondo is very powerful and has great defense. I love this kick, and the Flying Side kick. I hate how people get cocky because they're in MMA!>:(
hey i have this question...how meany types of side kick exist??? it's because i saw the movie of Bruce Lee and i looked like he used a diferent type of side kick, it doesn't look exactly like yours
i want to do this and get muscle like boyka! what should i do kwonkicker cuz i heard if you have too much muscle, then you wont be able to do this stuff??
@AbdulazizJam Well, when I do the push kick, it does nearly no damage at all. So I use it merely to unbalance and create a safe distance. Therefore, that makes the side kick a stronger kick. Correct me if I am wrong, anyone.
i have 2 questions, 1. can you tell me why you knife egde your foot when kicking? cus i feel i get more power behind it when im flat foot, 2. when you use this kick you make a little leap from then ground, do you get more power behind it that way? im just curious. and thanks for these films, you have helped me imrpove my kicks to a higher level. /bow
@Tobi1Kanobi93 Good questions. 1, To help stabilize the ankle joint, and to deliver the strike over a smaller surface area to increase the kicks penetration. Think of it like this: The edge of an axe penetrates alot better than the flat side of an axe. 2, the skipping motion loads all of my unhindered body weight behind the kick. adding a tremendous amount of extra power to the strike. Just be careful not to come up too high off the ground.
Another great tutorial. With the way you put your weight into the side kick, would you follow up with another kick in combination? like a spinning hook kick? It's good that you show how to set up going into these kicks. It would be good if you could also show how to transition out of these kicks into another kick that would be good in combination.
That almost looks like a back kick...is it necessary to always turn your body that much? Like when doing poomse or something...is the version taught in the revolution of kicking the outdated?
All your kicks are awesome. You're a great kicker. The only thing is I feel with the step side kick is it's usually better for smaller people to use ironically as taller people need much more space to send the kick into a smaller persons torso. Its not even worth the effort most of the time. What about Sanshou's way of doing the side kick, the stamp kick? After Seeing this type of side kick i feel it is the most effective one for the cage. It is not telegraphed and comes out very quickly.
@player445363 I do tkd and I was told if the are in a bladed stance which is them standing slightly side ways when fighting, aim for their hip, throw em' off balance, and if you've been hit there, you know it hurts like hell.
BTW, I have watched lots of your videos over the last couple months and you are pretty dang good bro. You execute everything like a experienced and skilled martial artist.
I like your hook kick videos. Its my favorite kick to do myself, and also the hardest one for me to do, although at this point it's become
@kwonkicker I'll add that, a side kick is a great defensive kick. Rear leg round kick is one of the most common kicks used and a lead leg side kick will beat a rear leg round 90% of the time. Rear leg kicks requires that you turn your shoulders which gives you that "squared up" window. @player445363 look for that opening. Shoot it out and reset as fast as possible for follow up techniques or defense.
@hedgehogs Its not a main point scorer and shoes do help, but I'd like to add that it can play games with your opponents confidence and setup techniques too. Rear leg is slow and powerful, but I use lead leg side kicks when i see someone starting to through a rear leg round or side kick. It doesn't always get past their guard, but the contact on the guard and them turning on one foot knocks them off balance and puts them in a difficult position to counter strike if you continue attacking.
Great video. The only crucial thing not mentioned is how when the kicking foot makes the impact, the supporting foot should become planted firmly, and the knee of the supporting leg should become almost-to-completely locked, for maximum transfer of force. Your technique shows that flawlessly in the video, but it's a nuance worth verbalizing.
I think these videos r good. I took tkd for a few years before i got interested in a few other styles, anyway I was surprised to see someone on youtube who actually knows what they r talkin about. Keep up the good work
im just starting taekwondo i have 5 months im already white, yellow tip and as i use 1 leg more than the other its like dislocating when i do this kick (it dislocates and locates back xd) do you know why it could be?
Excellent tutorial. Probably one of the few videos i've seen where someone isn't cheating the technique just to make it faster. You chamber the knee properly and push straight out.
i take muay thai and i was taught not to put your whole body into it like that so your ready to punch if you miss i throw mine almost like a sideways teep and without the big step
@fighterguy1988 That's okay for defense, but then you'll rarely, if ever, get a knockout with this kick. If you want the knockout, you'll have to put your full body weight behind the kick and strike with the heel. Wait for the opening, or create the opening, and then unleash. Timing is key. And even if your opponent covers up, if you put your full body weight behind the kick, it will still knock him back, knock him off balance, or even knock him down.
@kwonkicker side kick is my best kick, almost all my knock downs have come from a side kick although I do it more like a jab than a thrusting kick most of the time and yeah, timing is critical, most of the knock downs occured while my opponent was trying a circular kick and I beat him to the punch (so to speak)
@fighterguy1988 Thats muay thai. This is tkd. Different martial arts. They both kick and punch but have different techniques to accomplish the same goal.
@fighterguy1988 This kick is powerful but slow. TKD doesn't use it in close range - -for that, there are other kicks. You only commit to it either when you have a good setup, or to bridge the distance. The author emphasizes that this is the long range kick. That's what the little hop is for.
lot of people put tae kwon do down but i'll tell you what. If you get hit by a side kick by someone who knows what they are doing, you're going to the hospital guaranteed
I like the warning I got in the side box thingy hahah "warning Martial arts could get you or your child put in prison (or even killed) if used in real self defense situations." lol

When I say that, I mean I can't do a side kick MOVING, but a stationary side kick comes easily.
Could you give me tips on the footing and form?

When doing this kick, to get it's power, do you have to move towards the target, or can you remain stationary when kicking your opponent?
strarwarsfreak101 6 months ago
@strarwarsfreak101 You can stay standing and throw the kick and still knock them back. The kick Kwonkicker is using is called a Walking Side Kick. You can practice this by getting into fighting position, moving your back leg behind your front making a cross, chamber the front leg up and then throw the kick. Get the motion right and you can do it like KK. At 0:21 Kwonkicker does this perfectly.
The power comes from the body twisting the hips pushing all your weight into the leg.

which is stronger side kick or push kick ?
AbdulazizJam 1 year ago
@AbdulazizJam Well, when I do the push kick, it does nearly no damage at all. So I use it merely to unbalance and create a safe distance. Therefore, that makes the side kick a stronger kick. Correct me if I am wrong, anyone.

i have 2 questions, 1. can you tell me why you knife egde your foot when kicking? cus i feel i get more power behind it when im flat foot, 2. when you use this kick you make a little leap from then ground, do you get more power behind it that way? im just curious. and thanks for these films, you have helped me imrpove my kicks to a higher level. /bow
Tobi1Kanobi93 1 year ago 2
@Tobi1Kanobi93 Good questions. 1, To help stabilize the ankle joint, and to deliver the strike over a smaller surface area to increase the kicks penetration. Think of it like this: The edge of an axe penetrates alot better than the flat side of an axe. 2, the skipping motion loads all of my unhindered body weight behind the kick. adding a tremendous amount of extra power to the strike. Just be careful not to come up too high off the ground.

@kwonkicker you have very nice kicks can you do the splits

Another great tutorial. With the way you put your weight into the side kick, would you follow up with another kick in combination? like a spinning hook kick? It's good that you show how to set up going into these kicks. It would be good if you could also show how to transition out of these kicks into another kick that would be good in combination.

would this kick be effictive to the body or do you recommend the head?
RockoandTucko99 1 year ago
That almost looks like a back kick...is it necessary to always turn your body that much? Like when doing poomse or something...is the version taught in the revolution of kicking the outdated?

Is there any difference between Spinning Side Kick and Back Kick?
JusteGalthana 1 year ago

VexX81 1 year ago
@player445363 This is not a kick you'll score a lot in sparring. It's slow, and easy to deflect, block, or evade.
In self defense, however, when you're wearing shoes and your opponent doesn't wear gloves and forearm guards, it can easily produce fractures.
hedgehogs 1 year ago
@hedgehogs Its not a main point scorer and shoes do help, but I'd like to add that it can play games with your opponents confidence and setup techniques too. Rear leg is slow and powerful, but I use lead leg side kicks when i see someone starting to through a rear leg round or side kick. It doesn't always get past their guard, but the contact on the guard and them turning on one foot knocks them off balance and puts them in a difficult position to counter strike if you continue attacking.
VexX81 1 year ago
Great video. The only crucial thing not mentioned is how when the kicking foot makes the impact, the supporting foot should become planted firmly, and the knee of the supporting leg should become almost-to-completely locked, for maximum transfer of force. Your technique shows that flawlessly in the video, but it's a nuance worth verbalizing.
hedgehogs 1 year ago
I think these videos r good. I took tkd for a few years before i got interested in a few other styles, anyway I was surprised to see someone on youtube who actually knows what they r talkin about. Keep up the good work

Excellent tutorial. Probably one of the few videos i've seen where someone isn't cheating the technique just to make it faster. You chamber the knee properly and push straight out.

i take muay thai and i was taught not to put your whole body into it like that so your ready to punch if you miss i throw mine almost like a sideways teep and without the big step
fighterguy1988 1 year ago
@fighterguy1988 That's okay for defense, but then you'll rarely, if ever, get a knockout with this kick. If you want the knockout, you'll have to put your full body weight behind the kick and strike with the heel. Wait for the opening, or create the opening, and then unleash. Timing is key. And even if your opponent covers up, if you put your full body weight behind the kick, it will still knock him back, knock him off balance, or even knock him down.
kwonkicker 1 year ago 8
@kwonkicker side kick is my best kick, almost all my knock downs have come from a side kick although I do it more like a jab than a thrusting kick most of the time and yeah, timing is critical, most of the knock downs occured while my opponent was trying a circular kick and I beat him to the punch (so to speak)
colstreamer 1 year ago
@fighterguy1988 Thats muay thai. This is tkd. Different martial arts. They both kick and punch but have different techniques to accomplish the same goal.
Voltagia2 1 year ago
@fighterguy1988 This kick is powerful but slow. TKD doesn't use it in close range - -for that, there are other kicks. You only commit to it either when you have a good setup, or to bridge the distance. The author emphasizes that this is the long range kick. That's what the little hop is for.
