how was the power at high altitudes? I have a 240D and was thinking of taking it into the Rocky Mountains, specifically Rocky Mountain National Park. (14k feet elev) I'm not sure if it will make it.
I haven't been that high. The highest pass road in Europe is at 2800 meter (9200 ft), but my 200D (60 HP) managed that. The engine did run a bit funny. At 14,000 ft you lose about 40% of your power, so you're left with about 43 HP, that should be enough, but don't expect to go fast (you probably have to drive in first gear and very slowly).
You can slightly increase the valve clearance of the intake valves (from 0.10 mm to 0.15 mm) to increase the stroke and compress more air.
And you might want to ask your question on an American forum, (Benzworld for instance), there must be more people who tried to climb the Rockies in a 240D.
i have to say that this video cracks me up. i have a american 83 240d and even though its mercedes, anyone in my family hates riding with me because i sound like, and have the same accelation as a loaded 53 foot semi.----lol love my 240d and i can tell my family and friends it could be slower!!!! lol
Wow, the 200d was a 2 liter! Crap man! Thats like less than the 240, which is a very slow car! I have a 300d turbo, and the performance is acceptable. But yes, none of that matters because these cars cruise better than any other car in the world. Great car, I would love to drive a 200 someday, just to see
Thanks for the comment. The 200d is indeed very slow, I think I'm the slowest vehicle on the road these days. Mercedes-Benz built these small diesels from 1936 onwards to cater for the taxi market in Europe and for those people who wanted a reliable and long-living car. But like you said, it is great for cruising and it will get me anywhere, albeit a bit slowly.
This is the kind of trip that I love to make with a good old Mercedes. Riding slowly and enjoying the landscapes, stopping often to stare at the wilderness and breathing the cold air from "hochgebirge". The central and western Pirinees are also that wonderful, although not so imposing. What a nice video!
mmust be one slow car but quite the cruiser...i have an 84 300D (euro model with 5 speed) and i'll keep the car till it dies -which is seemingly never

That's the slowest car in the world

@Xiber1 It isn't about speed in a classic Mercedes. I own a '77 280SE (2.8L Straight-Six 185BHP), and speed is the last thing I want from it.

seems like he's going downhill, that POS will stall on a slight incline.
Xiber1 3 years ago
no, diesels don't stall that easily.

aa2398a 4 years ago
I was driving very slowly, because I was shooting the movie at the same time, steering a car and holding a camera is not that easy ;-)
But the 200D is quite sluggish (0-60mph in 30 seconds), but a marvellous cruiser indeed.
Thanks for the comment.
