@carl7342 Thats were I first heard it and when the reprive atr the end was done with Guitar it was so powerful and moving I just Had to hear it by itself. Orionedwin does a Fantastic version here~Best one I've heard~
this is so beautiful! I now understand the connection to the joke in rent "and it sounds bit like musetta's waltz" or something to that affect. this is beautiful! it's inspired me to continue playing piano...wow!
@orionedwin *cough* epic fail on my part. I suppose my pretension from the other comments made on this video caught up to me. Eh. Karma. I think I was vaguely aware of this fact in the back of my mind, but I’m not entirely sure. My brain is kinda taken over/clouded by it currently- I'm singing it in less than a week at a solo competition and have yet to practice it more than a few times nor fully learn the Italian. So I’ve kind of overdosed on hearing it as an aria. I apologize. Still, great job
@QuietReckoning Hi there and thanks for your comment . . . Actually the Rent song was based on this piano composition that the composer adapted for his opera "La Boheme."
Sentimentality, the melodramatic -- concepts usually held in disdain, EXCEPT at the hand of Puccini, who used them as beautiful colors on an artist's pallet. Great cover. The piano is such a magnificent instrument; another great surprise as well: who'd expect the king of instruments to be percussion; it's extreme tonality in the genre usually ascribed to a monotonic drum.
@paulhallart Aaaah the piano . . . Well Debussy asked that the piano be played as if it had no hammers! What's interesting in the case of Musetta's Waltz is that Puccini wrote this as a piano piece, while fishing! He only adapted it to La Boheme two years later! Thanks for dropping in with your interesting observations.
@orionedwin a propos the Debussy concept: I actually invented a percussionless piano. Claude would have gotten his wish: the cybernetic keyboard. It makes sense that Puccini might have conceived of this music while fishing, it's been my experience that the Universe itself has a role to play with human beings and music. It's odd that the concert hall has tended to dampen our awareness of that possibility in that one often tends to feel that the communication goes no further than it's walls.
@orionedwin I tried closing eyes, but it must be the a.d.d. -- didn't work so well, but then I used to do artwork while listening, often getting pictures painted that portrayed the future. Then, oddly, driving seemed to lend itself to the phenomenon. It was almost as if maintained velocity was part of the music, transforming one to some other dimension.
@paulhallart IU believe that all art can be an inspiration for other forms of artistry. It is interesting that you have witnessed the melding of music and speed . . . I remember once reaching 90MPH in a beat up old Honda Civic while listening to Freebird!
dude! that was wonderful!! i actually wish now days that i would have listened to my pianio teacher and my family, when they were pushing me in to music. lol o well :) but i just had to let you know that you are wonderful!! keep up the good work :) and of corse keep on enjoying the music.
That's right. They acknowledge it during "La Vie Boheme." Mark says (about the upcoming year): "And Roger will attempt to write a bittersweet, evocative song... that doesn't remind us of "Musetta's Waltz." The point is that Roger has had writer's block. That's why he keeps strumming the first few bars of "Musetta's Waltz." To derive inspiration. Besides, RENT is based on LA VIE BOHEME, anyway, so I'm sure Larson intended it as a tribute.
@spongeruss1 RENT was actually, albeit, 'loosely', based upon Puccini’s very renowned, classic opera, La Boheme. Maureen's character is based upon Puccini’s original Musetta, who sings a lovely aria entitled Musetta's Waltz. The lyrics, when translated, prove at least mildly similar to Take Me Or Leave Me, with mentions of "Being stared at as I walk down the street" etc. Jonathon Larson interpreted some of the original melody of the aria into his show, likely because he was fond of it.
to orionedwin--your comment is so funny! I learned last night that I have to sing a dopey parody of this in a comic play, and a brainless kid said, "It's from Rent!" I heroically refrained from telling her that it had a life before rent. Oi. Your playing is madly beautiful, by the way.
you are a great player i know that you are in the feel of the music but the music say slow in my book and your to jolty and fast it kind of takes away from the feel.. but otherwise great job
