  • I saw Tony Orlando and Dawn in March 1976 at the Carolina Coliseum in Columbia, SC. The show was delayed due to an ankle injury to Joyce. Her ankle was taped up and she was toted out and placed on a stool, where she remained for the entire concert. Despite this, it was still a good show.

  • Hit #3 in Billboard. God bless!

  • downwithfedr,You are the coolest dude on the internet.

  • Hope you like this song too - sung by a very cool guy.

  • I did some research & found out that "TIE A YELLOW RIBBON" was based on a true story.

this guy was in prison, and headed home on a bus but was afraid to look cuz he wasn't sure if his girl still wanted him. she had the entire tree, from the ground all the way up to about 25 feet up with yellow ribbons.

  • Thank you so much for sharing the information. Yes, many times, the lyrics of songs are inspired by some real life events.

  • @BEASTY0124 Thankyou for that ka kite

  • Glad you like the song. Thanks.

  • Yes, it is true. Very inspiring story...but soon people began equating the song with the POWs from Vietnam and then after that with any deployed military personnel returning home, so the original story has been lost...thanks for putting it here for us :)

  • Thanks for the information and feedback.

I like the true story behind the lyrics too.

  • To be more exact, he was heading from prison to his home town in central Florida. He wrote his wife that if she wanted him back, to tie a yellow ribbon on the large oak tree in the center of town. If he saw the ribbon, he would get off and reunite with her. If not, he would continue on to Miami and start a new life there. The yellow ribbons were used during the 1979-81 Iran hostage crisis, the first Gulf War, and other similar occasions.

  • Thank you so much for sharing the information.

  • knock 3 times tie a yellow ribbon are 2 of my favorites but sweet gypsy rose is defiinately my favorite that song has a beat that always sends chills up and down my spine!

  • Actually I like all of Tony's songs, very uplifting.

  • Joyce Vincent is now singing with Scherrie Payne and Lynda Laurence, Formerly of The Supremes!

  • Thank you for the information.

  • On one of his talk shows, Mark Christopher was talking about the music scene in 1973. He said that it was a down year as far as quality went. In other words, a lot of songs were wimpy and this was one of them. Agree or disagree? Feel free to reply. BTW, this was my first concert. March 1976 at the Carolina Coliseum in Columbia, SC.

  • I think this song and "Tie a yellow ribbon" were songs when Tony Orlando started changing his style.

A lot of us were so used to his style in

    "Candida"< "Knock 3 times", "I play and sing" etc/

  • Probably so. Knock 3 Times is my favorite. When I saw him, the concert was delayed due to an ankle injury to Joyce. They toted her out and she sat on a stool for the performance. It was a good show, though. He made several references to his friend, Freddie "Chico" Prinze, who had just become a father. We know what happened to him, which is why Tony quit performing for a while.

  • Thanks for the information. I am learning so much about Tony now.

  • I will always be grateful to my Uncle Joe & Aunt Helena for musically dragging me away from the abyss of my parents moribund taste in music. They introduced me to a world of positive, progressive way of thinking in the late 60's. They taught me the arts & to appreciate dance, rhythm & diverse culture. I scarcely think about the cocoon of ignorance I'd be living in (towards music) without these two departed people. I thank them from the bottom of my heart. Tony Orlando is the best. Cheers!

  • Cheers to you too, glad you like the song/

They really have a lot of great hits in the

70's and I miss them all.

  • Thanks for sharing your feelings.

Sad to hear of Ted's passing away.

  • I last saw Tony about 6 years ago, here in West Palm Beach, but we go way back to 1959 and Union City N.J. where we lived accross the street from one another, and we would all sit on the porch and sing. What great times we had. Luv Listening To All His Songs. Pat

  • Thanks for sharing the experience Pat.

  • "Candida" and "Knock 3 times" were their earlier styles. "Tie a yellow ribbon" and "Say has anybody seen my sweet gypsy rose" are both newer styles for the group.

  • Thanks have not heard this forever.

    Great memory. I'm 12 again!

  • Great, glad to make you feel 12 again!

  • I remember when this was on the charts in 1973 and I was 13 and i asked a girl from school out to the pictures on a saturday afternoon, I was so scared she would say no, but she said YES!,it was my first date with a girl, somehow associate this song with that memory.

  • grazie DAWN and TONY ORLANDO

  • Great singing by Tony Orlando and Dawn!

  • I saw Tony Orlando and Dawn in March 1976 at the Carolina Coliseum in Columbia, SC. The concert was delayed due to an ankle injury to Joyce. They toted her out and she sat on a stool for the performance. But it was a good show, though. Did anyone else see them around this time? Please reply if you did.

  • Hi Mkl62, even though I didn't see Tony Orlando and Dawn in concert, I still like their music. The contemporary music of today just cannot match these timeless classics.

  • Thanks. This was my first concert. Our neighbors had tickets and invited my mother and me. It was just over a year after my father died, so they felt that this would be a nice gesture. They paid for everything (dinner, a souvenir program). They wouldn't let us pay for anything.

  • Thanks, you are always very welcome. Glad I can share this song with you and everyone here.

  • thnx for all this music...so nice

  • You are very welcomed Poniran! It's my pleasure to share the song with everyone.

  • Really wonderful to hear this music. The old stuff was way ahead of the mumbo jumbo of today. Keep it up...great stuff.

  • Thanks Kenneth. I am glad to share the music with everyone. Yes, many of us like the older music too.

  • Thank you so much for the memories. Good times I tell ya.

  • Thanks Boardwalhustler, you are always welcomed!

  • Great Stuff

  • Great music too, thanks!

  • I had to sing this song with my first grade class back in 1977. How awful to do that to poor, unsuspecting children.

  • This is a great song. Yeah, I know the feeling but once you learn it, you will never forget that nice melody!

  • This songs message is really family oriented, it tells a story of how much a family will miss it's mother and want her to come back to them.... Now tell me where is the shame in this message? L Russell Brown It's not the stripper or some snoop dog dog lyric filled with racial slurs and profanity....

  • I sang this song as a kid. As a solo. And have look for years and can hear it over and now. Love it. Please it the all of the song even staring partting.
