If you invite someone to your country you are inviting their culture too. All I see in a few Bollywood movies which I saw, couldn't finish watching any of them till the end but no offense to Indian movie lovers who I know aren't few, is that they want to imitate the Western way of life and culture. But an incident like this shows us that just like Holywood what happens in their movies, in many cases, isn't actually the reality of life in their country.

That was an extremely rude act, on his part, if only because it clearly put her in a very awkward position.

Public displays of affection are a very contraversial issue in Indian politics, right now. My understanding is that this movement is primarily lead by Hindu fundamentalists. I would be interested in knowing more about this.

What bothers me most of all is the potentially imperialist overtones of this sort of behaviour. (I do not know this Gere, but this is not exactly positive publicity.)
