your right of course, all politicians are out for themselves obama included. the only difference between republicans and democrats screwing america is at least the dems will give you a little lube while the repubs give it to you dry...
We're being robbed, have been robbed, and they will rob us again until this country is completely bankrupt and the the Banksters will keep doing what they're doing elsewhere. Welcome to slavery redux.
Why cannot these fools answer questions? That is a surefire way to tell your lying. Mr president please find new people. I would trust a 25 year old with an economic degree over these crap masters.
Remember when we were angry about the bailout? And now we're angry about the bonuses? Thus the public refocuses on the drop in the bucket, and accepts the bucket as fact.
Really, so you don't think the American people need to know that? Fuck me. Can you not see that Obama's team, led by Geithner, is pulling the same evasive shit that Bush and his cronies did? Doesn't that piss you off? WTF America. Oh I see, because it's Obama all is forgiven.
nah i'm pretty sure i would be ok with it then too. probably because it's so obvious that he can't say but doesn't want to reply in the negative because that would seem... negative
his eyes... i think i can see his soul in those warm brown eyes
Isn't congress above the treasury? Can someone please explain to me how congress can't DEMAND this information? How can he say "I'll think about it" ?!?! What the fuck is going on here?!
Geithner reminds me a little bit of Obama in the early days of the Democratic primaries. All pundits and insiders predicted Hillary would win the nomination fight. But this "skinny guy with a funny name" beat Hillary, the notorious republican smear machine and set all kinds of records in his successful presidential bid. Geithner might follow the same path. Anyway, I am not ready to underestimate this shy guy!!!
You nailed it, GhostOfThe92503: Geithner is best suited for the job but can't do theatrics. NOW the question is: Do we want experts in theatrics or qualified people?
Here's a bright idea... give out a list of specific names of people to really pissed off people and see what happens. I for one think they'll use that knowledge responsibly. NOT.
Grand standing?!?!?! How on earth can you consider this grand standing? Geithner is dancing around the question when it's a simple yes or no answer.. so the congressman is stopping him in his tracks saying "no bitch, answer my question directly." He's spot on imo.
It's not a simple yes or no answer. It might not be legal to release that information. Given the amount of anger surrounding this issue it could well endanger the lives of anyone whose name appears on that list. It might upset negotiations the Fed is currently engaged in to try and get bonus money back.
He could have worded his response better but Geithner is right to say that he has to think it over first.
There are privacy laws governing what information government agencies can give out about private citizens, even to Congress. If Sherman had really wanted the information, rather than an attempt to look good in front of the cameras, he would have asked for it *before* the inquiry. Then if Geithner refused he could quiz him as to the grounds for the refusal.
I fully understand the concerns with releasing the identities of these people. What they're trying to establish is not WHO but HOW MUCH. Even if you present a list with John Doe 1 through 1,000 - it's the AMOUNTS that are important. This hubbub about confidentiality is purely ridiculous.
Besides that - and maybe I'm wrong about this, but common sense tells me that if it is submitted to congress with real names, it doesn't automatically become public information.
Certainly when grilling Liddy the committee insisted on names as well. Given that most of what is driving this is the desire to know if anyone in the Obama administration is on the list, it seems likely that Sherman wants names too. If not then I agree that nothing stands in the way of Geithner releasing the info.
As for privacy, congressional committees and investigations leak like sieves. You can safely assume that if Geithner hands over the list it will be in reporters' hands within hours.
Well I certainly stand corrected on that aspect. I can also better understand why it is important they also have the names as well, so thanks for sharing that perspective. I still think it is really most important to see the amounts at least and then they can decide how big of a problem it is and how to handle it from that point... shrug.
that there grilling this guy because it really fuels the growing falsehood that this is a conspiracy and we're going to be living in tents in the woods in 5 years that alot of people on the right wing media are pushing.
On the other hand, mr. sherman had a simple request and it really didn't require that complex of an answer.
Here's the simple problem.
Geitner is not SUITED FOR PRIMETIME talk.
bottom line. I think he's suited for the job but can't do theatrics well

Why do people always wanna get mad at one person, instead of the whole situation?
I think whoever the Treasury Secretary is right now, is going to be hated by a lot of Americans, regardless of what he does.
Am I the only one put off by the lack of patience and unrealistic hopes of instant gratification in this country?
Of course it sucks that we have to give these banks money. No one WANTS to, but some of us would rather do that then live in a shanty town under the bridge.

That's ridiculous. Geithner won't commit to giving an answer because he knows how pissed off the American people will be- and rightfully so.
