Great video. I pitch all over the place and only throw strikes when i have a full count. I jam people and make them chase balls. It's frustrating when people tell you to just throw strikes. I could throw strikes 95% of the time if i wanted, but that doesn't make you a good pitcher. The knuckleball works great when it is windy.
This actually is the best video i've seen on youtube describing slowpitch softball pitches. Most are geared towards fastpitch. So...THANKS for the tips!
Im the pitcher for our D team and pitching is friggin hard!!!! Some pitchers lunge, some just stand there and throw it without lungeing....some people palm the ball...other's don't. I can't seem to find a consistant strike throwing strategy and it's getting frustrating. And im LMFAO at the guy that said that he don't play Bobby Sox...ahahahahaha!!! That was funny :)
... since I've been throwing strikes more consistently, I've started playing around with ball placement. I'm actually a righty but I like pitching that "reverse curve" that comes inside on right-handed hitter. I got lots of guys to foul out the last couple of games with that. My team is still getting their butts kicked because we have no offense, but if I can strike out girls looking and get guys to foul out, that will help my team a lot. Plan on using some of your tips in the future. Thanks
I've been pitching on my D league team for a few seasons and I walk a lot of players. We play co-ed and my team is pretty much the only team in the league that doesn't tell its girls not to swing. I figured out that my main problem with accuracy was that I always brought my arm across my body (like a sidearm) when I pitched. So, rather than fight it, I decided to go with it the last couple of games and I actually struck out several girls looking just by adjusting my aim to fit my release...
Cool, I'm going to try to add that to my arsenal. I've been pitching for awhile, I've tried to throw softball pitches, like I would for a baseball. Change up, Knuckle, and a palm ball, and a split finger. I've just BS around, but I've found some that work. I probably average 2 walks a game. 9 runs a game. It's slow pitch softball so you're going to give up runs
first off im not a pitcher, i play everwhere but pitcher and catcher im just here to show my buddy some new pitches, second this video just made my day because Clutch- profits of doom is playing in the background haha
After trying pitches this way I'm still not sure if it makes a difference or not. I won my (So far) only championship when all I did was the basic backspin pitch. Of course we had a really strong team. And it's one thing to hit a manipulated baseball coming at you 80-90 mph than it is to hit a softball at like 5 mph. Anyone can hit a softball and get base hits no matter how it's pitched.
I've tried pitching this way. And guess what? Batters will still make base hits and home runs. Just like they do in the pros.
It doesn't matter what you pitch to them. If it's a good batter, he/she will hit it no matter what's p;itched and what defense you got and will rack up the scoring.
I've also discovered that in baseball related sports it's all about offense. I've played with great defenses but we still lost because our hitting wasn't there but the opposing teams was. I still try though.
I pitch in 2 B leagues & I totally agree with the person that said work the count. I average about 8-9 strikeouts a game because i can place the ball & get people to swing at garbage & then come back with a strike on a full count . People hate when I pitch, because I literally go full count on almost every batter. Just need to trust my outfield, I'm a flyball pitcher & love to throw curves or even just serve one up that drops a little short of the plate & get them chasing.

My main stratagegy for getting goodhitters out is first pitch strike, it is so important to get ahead. then pitch the corners and make him swing at bad pitches. It helps get batters to foul out. you get up two strikes on a guy he is swinging at anything close because nobody want to go down looking. I usally get 3 or 4 stikeouts a game with 1 or 2 walks.
If you get behind you have to be able to throw stikes I can throw about 80-90% stikes when I have to.
I pitch in a D league and I throw a lot of junk, however, with the really good hitters that stuff doesn't really matter. What I find really helps is pitch placement; for example if a hitter is standing at the back of the box I pitch low arc and just over the plate, if he is up in the box high arc to the back of the mat. If he is crowding the plate high and inside if he is away low outside. What this does is force him to move his feet, more moving parts in a swing it is hard to make good contact
This is the biggest joke i have ever seen lmao yes i play softball and your not going to fool anyone with any of these pitches, People will tell you this game is tough and all that bull shit but in reality all you need is a bunch of beers and enough fat lazy old men to show up so you can field a team. I play against some people that take this game so serious but really think about it this game is for lazy old men that are to shitting or dont have enough time to play real baseball anymore
Thanks for all the comments. We went 26 and 4 this year. Swept the playoffs and won the championship. I pitched 6 shutouts this year, including 2 in the three games we won for the championship. You can follow my team exploits on facebook if you like, link in the description.
For the Championship, I pounded the curve the entire game, and had AWESOME DEFENSE.
@bigFATloser29 Change up is a name I use, it is more like a cut fastball, but that did not sound right for slow pitch. It runs in on right handed batters.
@michaelisbalance I am real good fielder, so hit through the middle. Again, the idea is not to get you to strike out, it is to get you to hit it into my good defense, generally where I want you too hit it. A little late movement, which I have, throws off batters.
@Rubbersuitman Just for the record, a friend of mine posted that last comment...and told me he did so at a league game tonight...thus the late reply.
I have been playing slow pitch for awhile now in USSSA. I'm not sure if you play ASA or WSOL or NSA.....but the high pitch arc does eliminate the breaking or junk pitches. I played ASA last week against a guy who was professional with RentKing and his junk was pretty easily tagged.
If you enjoy the art of pitching to a defense, try USSSA.
@Rubbersuitman I too use a 32 oz. Worth Bamboo stick on occasion, however, composite bats are King here in Dallas. If you want to win, you have to swing composite.
My team runs a five man infield primarily and I pitch to this five man most of the time. I found it is more placement and being able to throw a strike that wind you the at bat. My junk pitches help, but my placement and making batters hit at me or my middle infielder is what turns a double play or cause a pop up.
@Rubbersuitman I don't care what you give me to hit it with I'll smack that big ass target so hard it will leave a smoke trail and snap the wooden bat. Shit I'll hit it with a fuckin stick if ya want me to, blindfold, at night, a 40oz in left hand and a 40oz in back pocket. Oh and your field looks like crap. Anybody ever water the grass at that low budget park?
Thank you for the video, it really helps. I leave in Florida and in summer season it gets windy, when I use the curve-ball it crosses the home plate from one side to another so what I do I use the cutter as a curve-ball and it works, and is all because of the wind. I'm working on getting a video together to show everybody. Thanks again!!!!
In slow pitch the shortstop and third baseman have to stop ground balls that are hit very hard and the outfielders still have to get a read on the ball and throw it in. Yeah, the catcher's job isn't nearly as hard as baseball and the pitching isn't as difficult to do but that doesn't mean that slow pitch is a joke.
@Rubbersuitman The secret is hitting, I've played many games, where we don't hit we lose. The D seems to always be there, but the bats aren't consistent
Slow pitch isn't as easy as people think. Yeah, sure, its very easy hitting wise when compared to baseball of fast pitch but unless someone already has the motor control and hand eye coordination it can be difficult. The point of the game isn't to make hitters completely miss the ball anyway. The pitcher's job is simply to get them to hit the ball poorly and/or get them to hit it to a fielder that can make the out. Fielding in slow pitch is definitely harder than batting though.
I play softball and I'm probably only decent/Ok but I don't understand how these pitches fool batters. The ball is moving slow enough in all the pitches for anyone to be able to hit. Yeah perhaps the first few times someone sees a ball spinning sideways (curve) or wobbling (knuckle) it may catch them off guard, but I would think that anyone that is used to sitting back and waiting for the ball wouldn't have any problems with it. Hitting it where they want is a little more difficult though.
when a base ball comes in at 80 to 100 mph it takes alot less power to hit a ball out you just got to get it on the right part of the bat but with slowpitch you have genarate all the power thats why it is harder than you think. Newton's Third Law of Motion: "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction". dont knock it till you try it. i bet you dont walk up and start hitting bombs go try and you will see
I would greatly appreciate if you can show how to release the ball for each pitch out of your hand. Like, how to actually use your fingers or do you need to use your fingers when u throw it or what type of motion you need to use when you throw the pitch. Please post this. Thanks.

There are several who would say fastpitch is much harder, but the truth is, that when the ball is pitched to you that slow, you have a WAY better chance to destroy it..which in my mind, means fielding is harder. Hitting is easier, but fielding is very fast-paced, because you get a lot of chances lol Outfield gets several as well
There are some basics to pitching competitively that most pitchers understand. First, watch the hitters position in the box, bad hitters will pigeon hole themselves. Next you can change the hitters sight level by mixing up speeds and heights but get ready quickly because a ball at 100+ mph hurts! and finally change the depth perception by working on releases that will make the ball fall deep or short depending on the batters stance. Defense!! Its tough to fool people tossing a ball underhand!
Any above average hitter would destroy this guy. Keys to pitching are hitting corners and knowing your batters tendencies, not throwing a "knuckle curve". Dumbass
@doubled7758 Softball is really fun, I'm a freshman in high school and we started playing Softball in PE. regardless of the fact, I'm hoping to play softball for my church so I don't have to wait til the end of the year if I have PE to play it haha
The other way to throw a "screwball" or "reverse curve", is similar to the curve ball I described previously, except that you roll the ball off of your index finger instead of your ring or middle finger, so that the ball again comes out spinning forward at an angle, but facing the other way. If you're right handed, the ball will be spinning forward and to the right of vertical. I personally use the backspin method, but I have seen this method used by others.
I believe there are two ways to throw a "screwball" (pitch that breaks opposite the direction of a curve) in slowpitch. I do it using basically the same grip I use for the curve ball (see my previous comments), except that I use a backspin delivery, with my palm toward the ground. I angle my arm out a little to the side so that the ball comes out spinning at an angle (similar to the curve except backwards instead of forwards). I find that I have to keep my wrist loose when I throw this pitch.
You DO NOT torque your hand and impart sidespin on the ball. I have only seen one guy throw an effective sidespin curve, and he was like 6' 4" and 300 lbs. You have to be very strong to do it that way. However, I have seen many guys throw effective curves in the manner I described. I personally have gotten the ball to break more than two feet on occasion. Note that if the wind is blowing from behind you or against the break it will not work.
The best way to throw a curve is to hold the ball with the seams (similar to this guy; I use a "3 fingered" grip, laying my index and ring fingers along the seams where they are closest together, but this isn't essential). When you deliver the ball you let it roll forward out of your hand off of the finger closest to you (in my case the ring finger, but if you use a "2 fingered" grip it would be your middle finger). The ball should come out spinning forward but at an angle. (see next comment)
Not trying to be mean, but most of this video is nonsense. The only pitch this guy is throwing that is moving at all is the knuckleball. It is possible to throw a curveball and a screwball (similar to what this guy is calling a cutter) in slowpitch, but not as described in the video. Very few people are strong enough to throw an effective curve (one that breaks more than a few inches) by spinning the ball the way this guy is trying to do it. I will explain further in my next comment.
@Rubbersuitman....I would greatly appreciate if you can show how to release the ball for each pitch out of your hand. Like, how to actually use your fingers or do you need to use your fingers when u throw it or what type of motion you need to use when you throw the pitch. Please post this. Thanks.
Wow, thank you. I have had a few surgeries on my glove hand so my shoulder does not go up as well. I never really leaned to step back after the follow through. So I gave up my pride position. I like to be the one coming in to replace the easy hit pitcher. I would love to get back into this. I will be working hard at this so when I come back I will have some awesome to display. Thanks
i hate it how people who play fastpitch think they are so cool but they arent i mean sure they pitch faster than slow pitch but who really cares i like playing slow pitch and its way more fun if you play traveling slow pitch ( and yes there is such a thing) it bothers me how they think were nothing well the ones at my school im not saying anything about anyone i dont kno please respond and tell me how you feel about it
i started in slowpitch but now play fastpitch but dont think im any better than a slow pitch player,. slowpitch is good for beginners etc and then you can step up to fastpitch if you want,. slowpitch gives you a different element to the game everyone is able to get bat on ball more plays are made more runs are put on the board and everyone has a great time! & thats the main thing,. i do have one question for you though, what is this "Traveling slowpitch"?
I've played 50 years with white balls,(1) with a yellow ball. Only one team in our League has the yellow balls and they are 8-0 and are hitting the crap out of the ball. I went 5-6, usually 2-4 or 3-4 with the white ones. Am I nutts or are the yellow ones livelier.we use 40 cor-375comp.
I don't know how your league works, but usually there is a dot system with all balls. There is the green dots being the lowest, and red dots being the highest. Red dots go a mile. Very tight, and hard. Basically an enlarged baseball. Green dots are mush balls. There are gold and blue as well. Blue and gold are very close to each other, but gold after about 20-50 hits, they turn into a good green ball basically. Just check your rules, and check their balls. The only difference. Is the balls' skin
8-0 right now. got 21 strikeouts and 10 walks. by far my best start to the season. lol we were 5-22 last year and we have the same team this year. can't explain the success
Nice job!! Our league is underway tomorrow, and I feel like I have some responsibility as the starting catcher to try and use the pitcher's tools to outsmart the hitters. It could be a big team effort, or you may have found something during the offseason that they have no idea to adapt to right now.
lol we've fallen back to earth. lost 5 straight, but snapped our streak yesterday with an extra inning 5-4 win. The knuckleball has been a god send for me. Players with 2 strikes can't lay off it.
Maybe your team is getting some remorse? Or it's just early in the season.. Might all fall through.. haha.. Or the other teams became worse than yours.. lol..
I've been pitching for over 10 years. I already had most of these pitches in my arsenal, but this video showed me a different way to hold the ball. I play in a lower-level coed league, and I can count on one hand the number of people I walked last season. This video is definitely helpful...good stuff!
I can't get the curve to break. I usually end up throwing way inside to righties. Do you start with your palm facing up? then spin it so your palm is facing down when you release? Or do you start with your palm facing inward? then ending up facing down when you release?
As a RHP, I throw my curve with my palm up and I try to rapidly rotate my hand as my arm is coming up into the release position. The best indicator is the thumb for me...my thumb should rotate from the back right of the ball to the front left. Alternatively the thumb could end up pointing left for a RHP. I find the first method more effective as the ball spins very tightly and moves right to left rapidly.
Check your grips as well...applying pressure incorrectly will straighten it out.
In the Mixed League I play in now these pitches would work..In my Old Competitive league the outfielders would get a sore neck watching the ball leave the park.Still watch the vid, though,it's very informative.I know as much about ball as anyone, but I don't know everything>No one does.
Excellent vid!!! I was serving up meatballs all season long until I peeped this video out. The Knuckleball really freaked the batters out!!! The Curve and Cutters worked to perfection, lots of ground balls. All this with just watching the video before a game!!! Imagine what can happen with practice! A million thanks to Malach for the vid. I look foward to his next pitching vid.
Cool vid. my first couple of years pitching i was the meatball kid. realy served it up and let the defense try to run it down.I dont walk hardly any usualy 1 or less a game so i can throw strikes consistantlybut once i started learning a few other types of pitches the game got realy fun, now i look more forward to pitching then i do to hitting, so i want to try a couple of the trows you sudjest in this vid namely the knuckle curve, cause they do get used to my curve. thursday night im trying it
The curve ball was great then they got used to it. I moved to the knuckle ball and one with backspin against the big guys and they really struggled. Got a lot of pop ups in the infield, I recommend this to everyone, in competitive and beer leagues..!! Nice job!
I'm usually playing third or left field, but my team is too afraid to pitch to the big hitters in our league, so by default I became pitcher. I actually forwarded this vid to the guy that was suppose to do it so we wouldn't get rocked. I tried the curve for the most part and moved around from side to side on the mound depending on which side the batter hit from.
I was chosen as the pitcher for my company softball team last week. Tonight is my first game and I am def going to use these pitches. I'll let you know how it goes. Greta stuff.
As for the knuckleball, your website says that we should release the fingers at the end of the windup: (1) does that mean release during the "backswing" or, when you're about to let go of the pitch? (2) What do you mean by "release": just let go of it? I've heard other people say to "extend the fingers".
For the curveball, do we want to focus on putting equal amounts of (1) twisting with (2) backspin? Or, would a curve ball be more effective if we focused entirely on just twisting it ?
You can't throw breaking balls in slowpitch! You just can't get the spin necessary. In order to induce a nontrivial asymmetric presure drag you need a lot more rotation than you can get by slowly underhanding and torqing your wrist. You'd get more break from a gentle breeze. It's the placebo effect at its best.
Please come to one of my games and explain to the hitters that I'm not really "curving" it and that its all an optical illusion. They will be dazzled by your brilliance.
Im having trouble with the change up. How is it different than the curve? When it says "slower" than the curve, is it talking about the spin? Do i try to spin it and throw it with the same force?
The Changeup is thrown almost reverse to a curve and will run into a right handers hands. It also goes to the plate slower, while the tossing motion is the same, almost a cut curve
any of you heard of the McQuades softball tournament up in Bismarck, ND? Biggest charity softball tournament in the USA... a lot of good teams go there... play in it every year
Sorry, I have been EXTREMELY busy with client web site work and illustrations, my brother has been busy with client video work. Surprising considering the economy . . . I will email him and we will schedule a time to do this.
Lost our last two games of the year, horribly by the way. Didn't make the playoffs. Got 4 rbi's to finish with 40 rbi's, which was my goal this year. Ah well, it's been fun.
snapped our 17 game losing streak! went 1 and 3 this weekend to push our amazing record to 5-21. Struck out 5 batters looking with my knuckleball. Our offence is so bad. I'm leading the team with 36 rbi's. The next closest player has 22, which is awful considering it's friggen softball and we only have 1 player averaging an rbi a game. ah well, it's still alot of fun. We have 6 games on sunday and then were done for the year baring a miracle that we make the playoffs.
Pitches do work - I use the curveball and knuckleball - I get atleast 2 Ks a night and mostly make them pop up or ground out - we made the playoffs - lost first round due to our bats not being there
im a softball player and those pitch were not allowed according to my coach. its not right cause it go up and down and softball players get used to it to hit linedrive. the ball should travel straight and not up-and-down motion.(except for curveball, knuckle curve and knuckle ball)
3-15 ft in most states? In what state? Not in the West Region, National or World tournaments.
USSSA Rule:
The Pitched Ball must arc at least 3 feet after leaving the Pitchers hand
and before it passes any part of Home Plate. The Pitched Ball shall not rise higher than 10 feet above the ground.
ASA Rule:
The ball must be delivered with perceptible arc and reach a height of at least six feet (1.83m) from the ground, while not exceeding a maximum height of 12 feet (3.66m) from the ground.
No where in the rules does it say you can pitch above 10 ft (usssa) or 12 ft (asa) ABOVE THE GROUND. No wonder you have so much success keeping guys in the park...15-18 ft is called rain in Cali. I bet you get extra runs for hitting the barn animals roaming the outfield on a line drive. LOL! Do you guys make up rules as the game progresses? The only chance a pitcher has keeping a good batter off balance is with juking/faking. As far as I'm concerned, every pitch in the video is a MEATBALL.
You don't get it, the goal is not to strike people out, it is to make them adjust to the movement and hit grounders and pop flies. Yes, I still give up hits and runs, but not that many. In addition as I have said before, I play is a wooden bat league.
exactly... you're not going to overpower anybody pitching in slowpitch softball... the point is to keep the batter off balanced and make them hit it right at your defense... or like you said ground out/pop out
we have 8 more games. 6 are against bad teams which we should have a chane. The other 2 are against a eam where we'll probably get our asses handed to us.
4 and 16 now. It was awful, we scored a combined 6 runs in our first two games and I got 5 of them lol. The second two we coughed up big leads in both. So frustrating.
My co ed team got torched 20-5. lol I was close to just walking into the field and having someone else pitch. Struck out 4 walked 2. Our co ed team is 1-10. I need some better athletic friends. I have 4 games on Sunday, where our record is 4-12. Been such a rough year after we seemed to be making so much progress last year.
6 - 12 from hand level or from ground? If it is from hand level that adds 3 feet, I would try and find that out. My Men's League, which plays ASA rules 3' to 18"
Ok, let me see, I have been playing slow pitch softball for 15 years, and pitching for 13. I have played USSA, ASA, and even as a partner in a mixed Special Olympics team, and no umpire has ever had any issue with my pitching. Of course I adjust based on rules, but almost every league I have ever played in allows up to 15'.
In Special Olmypics which I know follows ISF rules does it really matter how you throw the ball. I guess it doesn't matter if you use the change up, curve ball, and knuckle ball sometimes. I would like to get myself as a pitcher to the point where i'm not throwing the basic meatball. I can throw a curve, a change up, etc. I can be able to throw at least 2 types of pitches.
I get called for illegal if I got over 15' for Special Olympics, honestly, the umpire love me there cause I can throw all sorts of pitches and hardly ever toss a walk, and can hit a strike 95% of the time.
The last two weeks the umps have called differently. Our league is the beginners, so if I throw the meatball they have crushed it. I went back to the backspin and have done much better. The pitching in our league is weak, and everybody is looking to walk. I have walked fewer, but they CRUSH the meatball.
We play the first place team today.......lol i can already tell you how this will turn out. I've been getting a ton of infield pop flies lately with my cutter. People is my league never swing at the first pitch so I tend to throw a meatball to get ahead of the batter. I always break out my cutter for the second pitch and I've been having a ton of success with it. My curve hasn't been great lately for some reason, so I've been throwing a knuckleball as my out pitch as of late.
I woulda bet my bottom dollar that Malach was a fuckin' catcher.

Note the word at the end in the credits: "Edited."
How many takes to get the ball right over the plate like that every time?
No doubt there were a few outside pitches outside the strike zone.

@Madnessonman I am the editor. Each pitch took 3 takes, and almost all are in that video. Malach never misses his targets. Trust me.

People hate when I pitch, because I literally go full count on almost every batter. Just need to trust my outfield, I'm a flyball pitcher & love to throw curves or even just serve one up that drops a little short of the plate & get them chasing.
heelhook302 9 months ago
My main stratagegy for getting goodhitters out is first pitch strike, it is so important to get ahead. then pitch the corners and make him swing at bad pitches. It helps get batters to foul out. you get up two strikes on a guy he is swinging at anything close because nobody want to go down looking. I usally get 3 or 4 stikeouts a game with 1 or 2 walks.
If you get behind you have to be able to throw stikes I can throw about 80-90% stikes when I have to.
mdugas76 9 months ago

If you enjoy the art of pitching to a defense, try USSSA.
michaelisbalance 1 year ago
@Rubbersuitman I too use a 32 oz. Worth Bamboo stick on occasion, however, composite bats are King here in Dallas. If you want to win, you have to swing composite.
My team runs a five man infield primarily and I pitch to this five man most of the time. I found it is more placement and being able to throw a strike that wind you the at bat. My junk pitches help, but my placement and making batters hit at me or my middle infielder is what turns a double play or cause a pop up.
Please reply.

Rubbersuitman 1 year ago
In slow pitch the shortstop and third baseman have to stop ground balls that are hit very hard and the outfielders still have to get a read on the ball and throw it in. Yeah, the catcher's job isn't nearly as hard as baseball and the pitching isn't as difficult to do but that doesn't mean that slow pitch is a joke.
wookieeassassin 1 year ago
@wookieeassassin Slow pitch Secret: You need a pitcher who throws strikes and a good defense, you got that you will win most of your games.
Rubbersuitman 1 year ago
@Rubbersuitman
More important than a good defense is a good offense. In baseball related games having good hitters is what scores and wins games.
I've lost many games with an awesome D but we lost because we didn't have enough good base hitters.
Madnessonman 9 months ago
@Rubbersuitman The secret is hitting, I've played many games, where we don't hit we lose. The D seems to always be there, but the bats aren't consistent
ed2kou1 9 months ago
Slow pitch isn't as easy as people think. Yeah, sure, its very easy hitting wise when compared to baseball of fast pitch but unless someone already has the motor control and hand eye coordination it can be difficult. The point of the game isn't to make hitters completely miss the ball anyway. The pitcher's job is simply to get them to hit the ball poorly and/or get them to hit it to a fielder that can make the out. Fielding in slow pitch is definitely harder than batting though.
wookieeassassin 1 year ago
I play softball and I'm probably only decent/Ok but I don't understand how these pitches fool batters. The ball is moving slow enough in all the pitches for anyone to be able to hit. Yeah perhaps the first few times someone sees a ball spinning sideways (curve) or wobbling (knuckle) it may catch them off guard, but I would think that anyone that is used to sitting back and waiting for the ball wouldn't have any problems with it. Hitting it where they want is a little more difficult though.
wookieeassassin 1 year ago
when a base ball comes in at 80 to 100 mph it takes alot less power to hit a ball out you just got to get it on the right part of the bat but with slowpitch you have genarate all the power thats why it is harder than you think. Newton's Third Law of Motion: "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction". dont knock it till you try it. i bet you dont walk up and start hitting bombs go try and you will see

There are several who would say fastpitch is much harder, but the truth is, that when the ball is pitched to you that slow, you have a WAY better chance to destroy it..which in my mind, means fielding is harder. Hitting is easier, but fielding is very fast-paced, because you get a lot of chances lol Outfield gets several as well
Jagnole101 1 year ago
There are some basics to pitching competitively that most pitchers understand. First, watch the hitters position in the box, bad hitters will pigeon hole themselves. Next you can change the hitters sight level by mixing up speeds and heights but get ready quickly because a ball at 100+ mph hurts! and finally change the depth perception by working on releases that will make the ball fall deep or short depending on the batters stance. Defense!! Its tough to fool people tossing a ball underhand!
jackjodi8 2 years ago
Any above average hitter would destroy this guy. Keys to pitching are hitting corners and knowing your batters tendencies, not throwing a "knuckle curve". Dumbass

"Screwball" (cont.):
The other way to throw a "screwball" or "reverse curve", is similar to the curve ball I described previously, except that you roll the ball off of your index finger instead of your ring or middle finger, so that the ball again comes out spinning forward at an angle, but facing the other way. If you're right handed, the ball will be spinning forward and to the right of vertical. I personally use the backspin method, but I have seen this method used by others.
adaris2009 2 years ago
I believe there are two ways to throw a "screwball" (pitch that breaks opposite the direction of a curve) in slowpitch. I do it using basically the same grip I use for the curve ball (see my previous comments), except that I use a backspin delivery, with my palm toward the ground. I angle my arm out a little to the side so that the ball comes out spinning at an angle (similar to the curve except backwards instead of forwards). I find that I have to keep my wrist loose when I throw this pitch.
adaris2009 2 years ago
Curve ball (cont.):
You DO NOT torque your hand and impart sidespin on the ball. I have only seen one guy throw an effective sidespin curve, and he was like 6' 4" and 300 lbs. You have to be very strong to do it that way. However, I have seen many guys throw effective curves in the manner I described. I personally have gotten the ball to break more than two feet on occasion. Note that if the wind is blowing from behind you or against the break it will not work.
adaris2009 2 years ago
The best way to throw a curve is to hold the ball with the seams (similar to this guy; I use a "3 fingered" grip, laying my index and ring fingers along the seams where they are closest together, but this isn't essential). When you deliver the ball you let it roll forward out of your hand off of the finger closest to you (in my case the ring finger, but if you use a "2 fingered" grip it would be your middle finger). The ball should come out spinning forward but at an angle. (see next comment)
adaris2009 2 years ago
Not trying to be mean, but most of this video is nonsense. The only pitch this guy is throwing that is moving at all is the knuckleball. It is possible to throw a curveball and a screwball (similar to what this guy is calling a cutter) in slowpitch, but not as described in the video. Very few people are strong enough to throw an effective curve (one that breaks more than a few inches) by spinning the ball the way this guy is trying to do it. I will explain further in my next comment.
adaris2009 2 years ago
Very helpful when coupled with reading the article, I highly recommend reading the article too!

i started in slowpitch but now play fastpitch but dont think im any better than a slow pitch player,. slowpitch is good for beginners etc and then you can step up to fastpitch if you want,. slowpitch gives you a different element to the game everyone is able to get bat on ball more plays are made more runs are put on the board and everyone has a great time! & thats the main thing,. i do have one question for you though, what is this "Traveling slowpitch"?

I don't know how your league works, but usually there is a dot system with all balls. There is the green dots being the lowest, and red dots being the highest. Red dots go a mile. Very tight, and hard. Basically an enlarged baseball. Green dots are mush balls. There are gold and blue as well. Blue and gold are very close to each other, but gold after about 20-50 hits, they turn into a good green ball basically. Just check your rules, and check their balls. The only difference. Is the balls' skin

How can you say the goal is for ppl to hit the ball... i dont want anyone hitting my pitches i rather strike them out or foul out...
batesta20 2 years ago
Being a softball pitcher I agree. But in s.p.s.b. compared to baseball strikeouts are a rare thing. Batters WILL hit the ball 95-98% of the time.
The purpose is to give them these sloppy pitches so that they will make sloppy hits which are easier to catch or make an out with.
Madnessonman 2 years ago
I like to throw a meatball but with a lot of back spin on it. Seems to induce a lot of pop ups that are easy to catch.

GregDufour 2 years ago
Nice job!! Our league is underway tomorrow, and I feel like I have some responsibility as the starting catcher to try and use the pitcher's tools to outsmart the hitters. It could be a big team effort, or you may have found something during the offseason that they have no idea to adapt to right now.
halftimesportscards 2 years ago
lol we've fallen back to earth. lost 5 straight, but snapped our streak yesterday with an extra inning 5-4 win. The knuckleball has been a god send for me. Players with 2 strikes can't lay off it.
GregDufour 2 years ago
Maybe your team is getting some remorse? Or it's just early in the season.. Might all fall through.. haha.. Or the other teams became worse than yours.. lol..
spanky407 2 years ago
Turning your back on the batter and pitching it over your shoulder would not be a good idea for two reasons.
1) The umpire may call that "illegal" and have that be an automatic ball.
2) If the batter hits that anyway it could line drive into the back of your head causing injury and even possibly death.
So always face the batter when pitching.
Madnessonman 2 years ago
I've been pitching for over 10 years. I already had most of these pitches in my arsenal, but this video showed me a different way to hold the ball. I play in a lower-level coed league, and I can count on one hand the number of people I walked last season. This video is definitely helpful...good stuff!
jaduan1974 2 years ago
I can't get the curve to break. I usually end up throwing way inside to righties. Do you start with your palm facing up? then spin it so your palm is facing down when you release? Or do you start with your palm facing inward? then ending up facing down when you release?
TonyG362 2 years ago
As a RHP, I throw my curve with my palm up and I try to rapidly rotate my hand as my arm is coming up into the release position. The best indicator is the thumb for me...my thumb should rotate from the back right of the ball to the front left. Alternatively the thumb could end up pointing left for a RHP. I find the first method more effective as the ball spins very tightly and moves right to left rapidly.
Check your grips as well...applying pressure incorrectly will straighten it out.

As for the knuckleball, your website says that we should release the fingers at the end of the windup: (1) does that mean release during the "backswing" or, when you're about to let go of the pitch? (2) What do you mean by "release": just let go of it? I've heard other people say to "extend the fingers".
mcgurkryans 3 years ago
For the curveball, do we want to focus on putting equal amounts of (1) twisting with (2) backspin? Or, would a curve ball be more effective if we focused entirely on just twisting it ?

I use no backspin, all twisting, I use what I learned as a Baseball pitcher and coverted it to underhand

You can't throw breaking balls in slowpitch! You just can't get the spin necessary. In order to induce a nontrivial asymmetric presure drag you need a lot more rotation than you can get by slowly underhanding and torqing your wrist. You'd get more break from a gentle breeze. It's the placebo effect at its best.
zephyrus001 3 years ago
It is possible but in reverse, change the speed of your windup, and then toss the ball with movement

Are you playing slow pitch softaball. Most leagues give you 3 to 15 feet from release on arc.
Rubbersuitman 3 years ago
3-15 ft in most states? In what state? Not in the West Region, National or World tournaments.
USSSA Rule:
The Pitched Ball must arc at least 3 feet after leaving the Pitchers hand
and before it passes any part of Home Plate. The Pitched Ball shall not rise higher than 10 feet above the ground.
ASA Rule:
The ball must be delivered with perceptible arc and reach a height of at least six feet (1.83m) from the ground, while not exceeding a maximum height of 12 feet (3.66m) from the ground.
byurubbersuitman 3 years ago
My understanding from our umpires is it is 6 - 12' from your release, hence, I release at about 3'
Rubbersuitman 3 years ago
No where in the rules does it say you can pitch above 10 ft (usssa) or 12 ft (asa) ABOVE THE GROUND. No wonder you have so much success keeping guys in the park...15-18 ft is called rain in Cali. I bet you get extra runs for hitting the barn animals roaming the outfield on a line drive. LOL! Do you guys make up rules as the game progresses? The only chance a pitcher has keeping a good batter off balance is with juking/faking. As far as I'm concerned, every pitch in the video is a MEATBALL.

So, we won today finished the season 24 and 6 and in first place. We are the top seed in the playoffs, and get a bye for the first round.

4 and 16 now. It was awful, we scored a combined 6 runs in our first two games and I got 5 of them lol. The second two we coughed up big leads in both. So frustrating.

We are now 23 and 6, with one game left until playoffs, I walked my first batter in 5 games today.

Got 4 games in my mens league and 1 game in my co-ed. This is either going to be a decent weekend, or a bad one.

We got 2 left, our record is 21 - 6 and we are in first, got the second place team on Monday, we win that one, we got top ranking for the playoffs.

our league calls 6-12. some umps are leniant(sp), some are hard asses

6 - 12 from hand level or from ground? If it is from hand level that adds 3 feet, I would try and find that out. My Men's League, which plays ASA rules 3' to 18"

from the ground.

Those are all illegal pitches, too high

Ok, let me see, I have been playing slow pitch softball for 15 years, and pitching for 13. I have played USSA, ASA, and even as a partner in a mixed Special Olympics team, and no umpire has ever had any issue with my pitching. Of course I adjust based on rules, but almost every league I have ever played in allows up to 15'.
So what planet your play softball on?

In Special Olmypics which I know follows ISF rules does it really matter how you throw the ball. I guess it doesn't matter if you use the change up, curve ball, and knuckle ball sometimes. I would like to get myself as a pitcher to the point where i'm not throwing the basic meatball. I can throw a curve, a change up, etc. I can be able to throw at least 2 types of pitches.

I get called for illegal if I got over 15' for Special Olympics, honestly, the umpire love me there cause I can throw all sorts of pitches and hardly ever toss a walk, and can hit a strike 95% of the time.

lol the umps hate me. I've already been suspended twice in the past two years

stupid game got rained out

The umpire was only calling a dead-on strike, no black, no corners. I walked 14, 10 in one inning, and we came from ahead to lose.

Crappy umpire, ask for his supervisor
