I'm a classical pianist. I've been in my career for about 12 years. Believe it or not, Jeff Beck has been a major influence on me all these years. I love listening to his music. Very lyrical and expressive.
I grew up on 70's Rock. I might be in a low percentile by age group now but I love Trip Hop and Electronica and any blend with Rock..really. I like to think I kept evolving. Looks like Mr. Beck did too. ;)
I love this album, the production and have this song as my ringtone (home made;).
To Luxmaxnike ~ Yes, a bad call by the producer on that one I guess? It's still a great piece, even though the vocal sounds crap! That's how good Jeff is!! ☼ ;-j
@ELGROOVER Sure, too bad he didn't do a lot of amazing songs like Hendrix, Page or Clapton. He had the skill. Anyway, could you do a vid of his top 10 solos? it would be the first on youtube i think
To Luxmaxnike ~ You mean, doing ^covers of^ those artists songs, yes? He does do little Hendrix 'flurries' live on occasion... I'd like to hear Jeff do some Groundhogs stuff!!
A medley vid of JB is an excellent suggestion. I'd like to do that but I don't know when I'll find the time? PM me if you like with some ideas of what you'd like to see included, and I'll see what I can do...but no promises. My computer is a bit lacking ; it leaves me hanging a lot when I try to make vids these days ☼ ;-j
@ELGROOVER i meant relly doing albums as good as LZ IV, Electric Ladyland or Layla, but he never did. Yet he was a guitarrist in the same level of Clapton, Page and Hendrix.
To ~ Luxmaxnike ~ "BLOW BY BLOW" is totally out there, though it doesn't get the acclaim like the examples you cite, I think it should.
I'm not going to argue about my next point (I know there is a huge fan base of Claptonites) but I just don't get EC? Apart from Cream, who were superb (and I enjoy the Blind Faith album too) I think he's massively overrated. Tony T.S. McPhee, Alvin Lee, both far far better *in my humble opinion*. As for Jimi & Jimmy, yes, I dig 'em big time! Peace out! ☼ ;-j
@ELGROOVER Blow by Blow is indeed amazing, and the cover of "Cause We've Ended as Lovers" is one of his best perfomances on studio. But it still doesn't matches the amazingness of the albums i said before. Eric Clapton is maybe the most influential guitarrist ever. He created amazing melodies and made a buch o amazing solos. The ones in "Layla", "White Room" and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" are among the best ones ever. btw, can everyone do the "To ~ ___~" thing?
To Luxmaxnike ~ A reason Jeff's albums don't match up to those albums, like you say, could be because he's a 'player' who doesn't really do that many 'songs' as such ; he does his music most often as 'pieces' & this doesn't make it as easily accessible? He is unique.
As for Eric, I can't see the greatness in wh@ he's done post-Cream? Even my love of Cream is probably due as much, if not more, to Jack & Ginger than Eric himself. Guess I'm not as melody focused as some? (My loss I suppose??) ☼ :-j
To Luxmaxnike ~ Regarding @ & To ~ U should be able to edit or remove wh@ever appears in the text box. I don't wish to write 'at' people. I like to write (speak) 'to' or 'with' peeps.
I think 'Twitter' started th@ @ lark as a means of address? @ is where it's @, but I like to put my @ (A+O superimposed to my mind) where I choose, (can you dig it), r@her than where directed to!! Peeps may think it m@ters little, but as 'an address' it's poor & I don't like it much.
Hey You!! ~ Actually no, I couldn't. I don't listen to him like th@ ; I'm not a player. Can't say I'm fully conversant with his catalogue {uh? how else do u spell it then spellchecker? I don't have an American dictionary!} either. I like to listen to "Blow By Blow", "You Had It Coming", "Who Else?" and "Jeff" right through as albums.
Tracks that come to mind, Space For The Papa, Brush With The Blues, Dirty Mind, Rollin' & Tumblin', My Thing, Diamond Dust, Nadia, Loose Cannon, Cause We've Ended..
@ELGROOVER Yardbirds: The Nazz are Blue, Train Kept a Rollin', Psycho Daises and Shapes of Things. The JB Group : Shapes of Things, Beck's Bolero and Situation. Solo Career: Cause We've Ended as Lovers, Goodbye Pork Pie Hat, A Day in the Life. Roger Waters: What God Wants Part 3, Part 1 and Amused to Death. But i've only started to dig him yesterday, so i haven't heard all of his songs.
p.s. i like the words of the vocal even if i'm uncertain about the style of it, sometimes i don't mind the style, other times i'm not keen....it's weird....and for th@...maybe it was a good call by the producer after all!!? lol ☼ ;-j
okay what is up with this solo ? it has no live versions, no attempted covers, nothing else about it ... both solos ( especially the last one) definitely ranks as some of the greatest minutes of electric guitar playing i've ever heard, but im wondering whether this was something GOD just sent to Beck , and it just happened .... and that nobody can never redo something as incredible as this......(confusion)
I've tried covering the solos to this song some time ago and it's very difficult to emulate. Just getting the notes down isn't enough because he incorporates all these subtle touches and changes to make it sound as great as it does. Maybe it's better off keeping it all a mystery because this guitar work is from outer space.
1) It's called a "trill". Rest the heel of your hand on the bridge of a whammy bar-equipped Strat, & vibrate your hand or apply slight pressure to the bridge while you're playing the note. Beck may also get this sound just by manipulating the whammy bar. Before I'd ever heard Beck use this technique, I used to do it accidentally on my Strat by unintentionally resting my hand on the bridge….
2) …I corrected my hand placement after realizng what was causing the trill, but then I had no idea it could be used to good effect! Buy Beck's 2007 DVD "Performing This Week Live at Ronnie Scott's" for a close-up look at his technique. Shot in a small 250 seat club, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, Brian May & Jon Bon Jovi are in the audience! Beck also has Eric Clapton play on a couple of songs, & Imogen Heap & Joss Stone sing too. My favorite track is "Rollin & Tumblin" - mind-blowing performance!
how does his guitar make that shrill at 1:02? John Mayer used Beck's signature on his latest album and that sound is also in some of Mayer's song. Does anyone know if it's a sound specific to the guitar itself or if it's some sort of technique / effect / pedal?
This is such an overlooked JB-song. I mean. Along with (in my opinion) the best song ever, Blanket, this is just about the best solo I've ever heard. Still, there's not a single live recording to be found.
very very nice remark! i was looking for words to describe what i was feeling when i was listening to this song and you did it!! i wonder if there are any songs like this one out there?
cool :) I can't think of any songs like this one. you can check out my channel though. I've done some guitar improvs on top of other artists songs. Kind of similar to this one. You might like them.
Yea... his playing is outstanding!!
