Removal of the macbook wasn't exactly a bad thing, but whenever they do the new macbook air it needs a disk drive, more RAM, and lil bit bigger HD, for the same price as it is now.
The MacBook Air is a great update, the Mac Mini is disappointing as far as the baseline model goes, the cinema display is pretty cool, Lion is amazing and I don't mind the removal of the MacBooks. It's really hard to make plastic look sexy, plus the MacBook Airs are so much faster thanks to their flash storage options and new i5, i7 processors.
it is cool that Apple removes the macbook IF they lower the price on MBPs too. It is like apple doesnt see it customers as people but as moneymachines to which they try to squeeze every daim out of their buyers.
@Baal1985 The MacBook Pro is a stand-alone product. It's not a MacBook. A MacBook is part of the "MacBook" line of Apple computers. Apple doesn't need to lower any prices, in fact, they did a lot of people a favor. The MacBooks were incredibly redundant. People are better off buying MacBook Airs with i5 and flash storage than buying a MacBook.
@iDiggMGL I am gonna beg to differ. It is true with the recent update the Macbook Air did become more interesting, but personally I would still need a computer with a cd/dvd drive which the Air doesnt have. Most people using Macbook are students, and to be able to buy a somewhat good computer for a "low" price apple-wise the macbook was a really good option. So I still maintain apple should lower the price on mbps to compensate and reinstall equilibrium. If you disagree that's fine with me.
@Baal1985 Apple has USB super drives on their site. You can pick one up as you check out, in fact. I know you're going to say, well that adds to the price, but in the grand scheme of things, if you're a student, you're getting a student discount as it is so the super drive pays for itself. I have the 2010 C2D MacBook Air and it's faster than my 2010 i7 MacBook Pro. Give a MacBook Air a try, you'll never argue for MacBooks, except if you're talking about graphics performance.
@iDiggMGL I'll check the models out after the update next year, possibly early spring and then see what I want (and can afford). The student discount is not that much, and the 25 % VAT from where Im from adds to the total price. I might give Air a chance, I might not.
@Baal1985 Yeah, I understand where you're coming from as a student who has a specific budget, I'm just saying I bought a MacBook Air for school and it was amazingly fast. I actually didn't end up buying the super drive because it has built in software that less you instal software from another computers DVD drive, though I never even used that feature. I was just making the point that the student discount may not be much but it pays for the super drive. I'm selling my Air. I like my iPad better.
hey bro just wanted to let you i really enjoyed this video.. you been editing freaking great, but a bit of humor goes a long way, i love your honesty about apple products.
In my opinion Lion is a bit of "meh" as well, but i do use launchpad quite a bit now, as well as expose..
anyhow.. good video, thumbs up m8 keep it up dude.
Mark, I don't mean to be unkind but I thought you should know that I am becoming disinterested in your videos of late. I guess some like the snappy funny talk but personally I just want tech info not entertainment. Sorry.
The Mac Mini's disc drive was removed because Apple is being cheap. There's room for a disc drive, or second hard drive if you can find the right cable. The removal of the white MacBook is going to make more people look into other full featured laptops that cost $1000 or less.
I have a Macbook Pro but no iphone or ipad to sync it with so i don't really feel like Lion is going to change my life at all. The versions backup thing is the only thing i'm excited about but its just like time machine on a computer. I have no desire to get the macbook air, would rather have a netbook with better specs and a lower cost
a macmini with no drive is a huge letdown: there are really people who use these like towers and also for art installations. Lion is really not that appealing to me now.
Lion the biggest waste of money since snow lepoard, its really not that great, and its stupid apple getting rid of their macbook as the macbook pro is expensive and the air is overpriced without a disc drive, what about all those people with hundreds of CD's and DVD's I refuse to buy of itunes incase something happens to my harddrive and itunes usually messes stuff up for me, hard copys on discs are still the way to go!!
@Dmhlcmb It requires more to run (Even my i3 4GB 2010 iMac Has some lag to it, more then in SL), the new Finder is horrible, the UI looks kind of silly, and there is no rosetta (I had 4 apps, which I needed, that use Rosetta). All in all, I'm not to impressed.
@Dmhlcmb It is pretty sad. I am thinking of making a video soon, and you can also search it to see what it looks like. It's also slightly buggy aswell
Cinema display can only be hooked up via thunderbolt now unless you have an adapter. It's not like many people buy it already, now there will be even less. Also why does the mac mini have the option of 6630m graphics but the server doesn't. Maybe I want RAID functionality and some limited graphics power. Why can't I have both.
Removal of Macbook, not a big deal. Removal of DVD drive from Mac Mini, WTF?! So I gotta pay extra to input all of my 250 music CDs by buying an external DVD drive? WTF? Macbook Air, overpriced, too small, no dvd drive, waste of money, pay more for less? That's not just a no, it's a hell no! Lion? Not needed, it's like Leopard to Snow Leopard, tiny things change but it's still the same OS and new features that I won't even use. Apple is innovative, but overpriced.
@feenix1616 : Yes exactly pure marketing. I was almost draw in to all the that nonsense myself. I have been saying this for a long time now. It is strange how they are upsetting their established user's because the software is not up to standard and soon neither will the hardware be and Job's is too arrogant with all of these class actions.
Although I do miss the more well thought out videos of old were you just sat and talked to the camera for a little while, instead of chopping up every sentence.
Dave, Please don't upgrade to lion yet! I have a mid 2010 Macbook with 2GBs of RAM and it runs so slowly on lion. I sat here back in October drooling over the Lion features but, Its not worth losing speed. I am thinking about a downgrade until I get the money to get 4GBs of RAM in my system. If you really don't want to lose productivity, don't upgrade yet! I love Lions features, but performance sucks! Also, on 2 GBs of RAM it is pretty glitchy.
Also I have upgraded my iMac to OS X Lion and it first of all corrupted my hard drive so I had to go into the new Disk Utility partition (restart and hold down alt) and do a disk repair. If i'm honest the new features are not anything overly important, nor aid productivity in anyway. But for £20 there's not much to lose I guess.
I'm pretty upset CD drives are being removed, I've always preferred having a hard copy of an album or program.
As for the laptops, I would laugh if they named the MacBook Pros just MacBooks again. I think the white MacBook doesn't really fit in with the current line-up so am not too upset about seeing it go. However the way you are now forced to either get a optical drive-less Air or an expensive Pro seems unfair.
Apple should rename the 13 inch Macbook pro back to Macbook. Leave the pro for the 15 and 17 inch. I know it's a name, but the name Macbook it's classic.
I will not be buying a new Mac mini and sticking with my 2010 model because there is no optical drive and If I am going to be spending that amount of money on a HTPC then I need a optical drive. Silly Apple. Most people use the Mac mini as a HTPC because of its size and having no optical drive will put a lot of people off buying one as streaming media can not match the quality of optical media just yet.
As much as I love OS X, I don't like the direction apple are headed. I'm building a gaming system and will probably stick to that eventually. We shall see.
It's obvious you haven't used the Macbook Air, so before making a judgement use it. The old Macbook didn't have SSD. Plus the new Air is actually faster than the old White Macbook. Poor video.
Stop complaining about the price, a couple hundred cash can't hurt you? And if your gonna buy a computer, your buying something worth it, I upgraded my 13' MBP 2011 to the i7 model and I love it, it was worth it.
I updated my MB Pro the day of release and had a lot of problems with the UPGRADE. So, I used the bootable DVD I made to do a clean install and everything is great. I would definitely recommend that approach when going to Lion.
@dfgregoire Hi, I saw your comment. So do you think you should do a clean install before upgrading straight to Lion? What problems were you experiencing? Thanks!
@TechieTeenGirl I definitely recommend a clean install, just from my own personal experience. Also, I used to be a Windows user and it was ALWAYS advised to clean install your OS. Problems I had were with almost all programs...they would stop responding and I would have to Force Quit them from the Activity Monitor menu. Sluggish to boot and sluggish to turn off system also. My upgrade over Snow Leopard went smooth but then things started falling apart quickly. Everything is great now!
I hate how apple got rid of the white macbook. I hate how they got rid of the cd drive on the mini and the air is way to expensive. It should start at 900 or they should get rid of the air. No cd drive or nothin. I can get a new macbook pro at the same price as the air. Apple is ripping everyone off
why why why i need the macbook i dont wanna buy a refurbished cause it means used and why on this earth would i thro away my dvds apple im not payin for the pro bring back the macbook........... well if you dont at least lower the price of the pro
2 Duos or better an run lion , and all Mac released after '08 should have 2GB RAM standard except for Mac Mini until '09. Lion needs a minumum of 2GB but I am sure it will do with 1GB. (except that the installer will say u can't install)
@davidbuddy9 don't worry , underneath the Windows 8 Tiles UI is still the Windows 7 UI. And dont ever use Chrome OS , why the hell do I need an Internet connection to use Word or PowerPoint , why the hell do I need a connection to play games , single player yet! Get a MBA 11-inch trust me the screen is bigger than u think.
@KissesLoveKawaii are u talking about the 13-inch i7? Well that Pro is a 2.7GHz Core i7 not 2GHz, and the MBPs just feel like they have more love put into them, the refined feel and the anodized aluminum just makes the laptop feel so solid. That's why I use Mac more than PCs now.
I love Snow Leopard and had high hopes for Lion, but honestly... it's a bit of a weird iOS-Mac-OS-hybrid. It feels like a shambles. Both Mac OS and iOS both feel very straight forward and easy to use (admittedly, Mac OS less so, but it makes up for the slight learning curve with raw power); but Lion feels convoluted and gimmicky. It isn't the Mac OS I fell in love with. I hope Apple finds a better way to integrate the look and feel of iOS in the next version - a way that doesn't feel tacked on.
I HAVE A 2010 MACBOOK 13" pro, and it is running pretty good, its the entry level pro of that year, and i like lion, it could use some improvements, but what never does
If Had to get a mac it Propabley is the plain macbook but now i'm stumped because I recentley saw Windows 8 Start Menu and it sucks So Were am I going to go Mabe Chrome OS or somthing
@iTitaniumProductions Then buy yourself a cheap Gateway T-Series laptop and turn it into a 98% MacBook Pro with almost everything working natively... Just use iBoot + Multibeast to get everything working properly.... easy to use and yes two scrolling works perfect! all for less then $300 can't beat that!
@sinclairalex80 I'm sure their research shows that what you just said is wrong, and my proof for that is the MacBook no longer exists and the mini doesn't have an optical drive. Most people don't use optical drives any more beyond the odd "now and then" moments, like ripping CD's to their system or something. The MacBook had too much overlap with the entry level MacBook Pro so it didn't make sense maintaining such similarly specced machines and it saves them money for production.
I'm not surprised that Apple got rid of the normal Macbook, even though the Air is a lower spec, it is quicker than the normal Macbook. The only main disadvantage is the screen size and no DVD drive - but really, how often do you need to use these? Lion so far seems to be good, and the Mac Mini's look awesome!
2. i still dont see the point all of theese things where out on pc ages ago, apple used to be the pioneers, not they seem to me just to be playing catchup, even with ios5, thats just catching up to android, their not really the pioneers they once where.. now their just a white case and a ageing os
I go to a large London university and I see hundreds of students and their laptops every day. I have literally not seen a single MacBook Air in the last year. Never encountered one, not a whiff. Maybe that's cos they're so small? But in the building where I live, i know five people with white MacBooks in my flat and the flat below me ALONE. People buy netbooks because they're small and cheap! The MacBook Air really fails on that second criteria when you compare it to the competition.
The first time I was introduced to a Mac was in 2007 in primary school, it was an eMac, but the real first time I used a Mac for project work was my current school's white MacBook. Now I have my own PowerBook and an Intel Mac Mini (Core Duo)
Big mistake discontinuing white macbook. There is nothing else in the mac line up that fills that niche. I know plenty of people (including myself) that would never have switched to mac if it hadn't have been for the affordable plastic macbook.
I think there going to put the macbook back because its goes from macbook air and to macbook pro? it would make sense if they made a middle one with the a midi performance and i mean by that a 1.8 ghz core i5 or something and they should make it affordable not a thousand bucks they should make it the same price as the macbook air with is 849 i think
and i don't think that the 13 inch deserves to have Pro on the end there not very powerful and i think they should be a MacBook like a couple of
Apple is pretty soon going to lose it, I can't wait -- why? because they are taking advantage of their customers to the max.!! for a small polish they ask hundreds and hundreds of Euros??? come on... Windows has updates included for free...
Note to Apple fans, don't take it personally, I get that you're frustrated for being raped when you bought then apple stuff and saw that you actually didn't get the best bang for the buck, not even close...
@duminicad Really? These aren't just some "updates". Look, instead of me blowing up on you like an idiot let's logically explain this out.
1. Not an update, Apple never really likes to get too technical on their website. They just give the short and sweet. Read up John Siracusa's review on OSX Lion. The beginning is mostly what you would expect but the last 10 pages explains why it's bang for yo buck.
2. The price, yeah if this was priced the same as Windows($200) It'd be crap, but it's $30!
@duminicad Oh really? Macs don't increase your productivity? Shouldn't they finish more work FASTER because of the ability to run both Mac OSX and Windows? If you read my other comment i never said i'd choose between the operating systems. It's just that YOU are too biased.
@bayzarea925 nope... Macs do not increase my productivity, in fact it decreases, I'm not interested in any shiny thing, I need to get my stuff done as fast as possible so I can enjoy life -- you know... the thing one does when leaves the computer alone?
Don't be frustrated, I'm not attacking MAC users, if you get used to it, it gets to be productive for YOU.
I was simply expressing my opinion, but clearly it got up to a different level unfortunately...
@duminicad Tsk Tsk, i'm not saying i prefer one or the other, read again. I use them both, daily.
You are wrong, macbook pro- $1,199, they don't release the operating system every year. Macs have just the same amount, if not more than Windows, times have changed dude. Apple does not have total control over their OS all the time, you can change almost everything from terminal or from downloading the application called Secrets. Almost everything that you said was wrong, again.
@duminicad Get a Mac and you'll understand. Windows 7 is great, I love it, but its like fisher price compared to mac. If you think it should work a certain way on a Mac, it probably does, If you think it should work a certain way on windows, they'll copy Mac in a few years and it might.
@Dmhlcmb I agree on the "copy" scheme, MS is not really "innovative" for the past couple of years... too bad, we need them to compete in order to get the best out of every option(Win, Mac OS, Linux, etc.).
iv been using Lion for a day now and i have to say im pretty impressed, but it took a while to get the gestures that way id like them to be. Also the only bug that i managed to find was that sometimes in mission control an open window sometime overlaps the other "desktops" and you can acces them until you make the window smaller.
Wasn't one of the main selling points of the Mac Mini as an HTPC? so i really don't understand the logic of removing a DVD drive..? heck, if they had added a blu-ray drive then I guarentee their sales would shoot up

09optime 7 months ago
I updated my MB Pro the day of release and had a lot of problems with the UPGRADE. So, I used the bootable DVD I made to do a clean install and everything is great. I would definitely recommend that approach when going to Lion.
dfgregoire 7 months ago
@dfgregoire Hi, I saw your comment. So do you think you should do a clean install before upgrading straight to Lion? What problems were you experiencing? Thanks!
TechieTeenGirl 7 months ago
@TechieTeenGirl I definitely recommend a clean install, just from my own personal experience. Also, I used to be a Windows user and it was ALWAYS advised to clean install your OS. Problems I had were with almost all programs...they would stop responding and I would have to Force Quit them from the Activity Monitor menu. Sluggish to boot and sluggish to turn off system also. My upgrade over Snow Leopard went smooth but then things started falling apart quickly. Everything is great now!
dfgregoire 7 months ago
I hate how apple got rid of the white macbook. I hate how they got rid of the cd drive on the mini and the air is way to expensive. It should start at 900 or they should get rid of the air. No cd drive or nothin. I can get a new macbook pro at the same price as the air. Apple is ripping everyone off

@chaosmaker00 WTF, all Macs with Core
2 Duos or better an run lion , and all Mac released after '08 should have 2GB RAM standard except for Mac Mini until '09. Lion needs a minumum of 2GB but I am sure it will do with 1GB. (except that the installer will say u can't install)
86123maxxi 7 months ago
@davidbuddy9 don't worry , underneath the Windows 8 Tiles UI is still the Windows 7 UI. And dont ever use Chrome OS , why the hell do I need an Internet connection to use Word or PowerPoint , why the hell do I need a connection to play games , single player yet! Get a MBA 11-inch trust me the screen is bigger than u think.
86123maxxi 7 months ago
@KissesLoveKawaii are u talking about the 13-inch i7? Well that Pro is a 2.7GHz Core i7 not 2GHz, and the MBPs just feel like they have more love put into them, the refined feel and the anodized aluminum just makes the laptop feel so solid. That's why I use Mac more than PCs now.
86123maxxi 7 months ago
I love Snow Leopard and had high hopes for Lion, but honestly... it's a bit of a weird iOS-Mac-OS-hybrid. It feels like a shambles. Both Mac OS and iOS both feel very straight forward and easy to use (admittedly, Mac OS less so, but it makes up for the slight learning curve with raw power); but Lion feels convoluted and gimmicky. It isn't the Mac OS I fell in love with. I hope Apple finds a better way to integrate the look and feel of iOS in the next version - a way that doesn't feel tacked on.

Apples worst decisions ever, They need the white macbook and the mac mini needs an optical drive
I still say your the best tech head on youtube <3
sinclairalex80 7 months ago
@sinclairalex80 I'm sure their research shows that what you just said is wrong, and my proof for that is the MacBook no longer exists and the mini doesn't have an optical drive. Most people don't use optical drives any more beyond the odd "now and then" moments, like ripping CD's to their system or something. The MacBook had too much overlap with the entry level MacBook Pro so it didn't make sense maintaining such similarly specced machines and it saves them money for production.
TalesOfWar 7 months ago
@TalesOfWar well my opinion stands, nothing will change that. and i didn't ask for anyones opinion i just said what i think

The MacBook Air really fails on that second criteria when you compare it to the competition.
jamesball1 7 months ago
Dislike the Air.
Needed the MacBook within the lineup.
Stupid to get rid of the DVD drive on the Mac Mini.
Cinema display looks ok... liked the old one better.
Lion... I want it but my '09 MacBook Pro can't handle it

The first time I was introduced to a Mac was in 2007 in primary school, it was an eMac, but the real first time I used a Mac for project work was my current school's white MacBook. Now I have my own PowerBook and an Intel Mac Mini (Core Duo)

I think there going to put the macbook back because its goes from macbook air and to macbook pro? it would make sense if they made a middle one with the a midi performance and i mean by that a 1.8 ghz core i5 or something and they should make it affordable not a thousand bucks they should make it the same price as the macbook air with is 849 i think
and i don't think that the 13 inch deserves to have Pro on the end there not very powerful and i think they should be a MacBook like a couple of

romodrummerjz 7 months ago
Apple is pretty soon going to lose it, I can't wait -- why? because they are taking advantage of their customers to the max.!! for a small polish they ask hundreds and hundreds of Euros??? come on... Windows has updates included for free...
Note to Apple fans, don't take it personally, I get that you're frustrated for being raped when you bought then apple stuff and saw that you actually didn't get the best bang for the buck, not even close...
duminicad 7 months ago
@duminicad Really? These aren't just some "updates". Look, instead of me blowing up on you like an idiot let's logically explain this out.
1. Not an update, Apple never really likes to get too technical on their website. They just give the short and sweet. Read up John Siracusa's review on OSX Lion. The beginning is mostly what you would expect but the last 10 pages explains why it's bang for yo buck.
2. The price, yeah if this was priced the same as Windows($200) It'd be crap, but it's $30!
bayzarea925 7 months ago
@bayzarea925 computers are all about increasing ones productivity anything besides that it's just a waste of money, time and effort.
duminicad 7 months ago
@duminicad Oh really? Macs don't increase your productivity? Shouldn't they finish more work FASTER because of the ability to run both Mac OSX and Windows? If you read my other comment i never said i'd choose between the operating systems. It's just that YOU are too biased.
bayzarea925 7 months ago
@bayzarea925 nope... Macs do not increase my productivity, in fact it decreases, I'm not interested in any shiny thing, I need to get my stuff done as fast as possible so I can enjoy life -- you know... the thing one does when leaves the computer alone?
Don't be frustrated, I'm not attacking MAC users, if you get used to it, it gets to be productive for YOU.
I was simply expressing my opinion, but clearly it got up to a different level unfortunately...
duminicad 7 months ago
@duminicad 3.They aren't taking advantage of customers because as stated in 2, it's $30, not sure how many Euros though.
4.For Windows, Microsoft only do security and stability updates, completely unrelated to a new operating system.
5. Modernization, not a big thing, but very big change. The whole look is reformatted. It's like from XP to Windows 7.
6. I am always happy with my Apple Products, i own a a small amount of both types of computers and they both work for their own purposes.
bayzarea925 7 months ago
@bayzarea925 the fact that you aren't paying $2,000 when you buy a product that doesn't mean that you won't pay more in time, example:
macbook pro: ~$1,500
in a year from now, os update: ~$30-50
applications: ~$0-$X,XXX -- on Windows and Linux you have more freeware(and GOOD) applications available
apple has TOTAL control over their OS, they are restricting stuff faster than they are releasing new features.
duminicad 7 months ago
@duminicad Tsk Tsk, i'm not saying i prefer one or the other, read again. I use them both, daily.
You are wrong, macbook pro- $1,199, they don't release the operating system every year. Macs have just the same amount, if not more than Windows, times have changed dude. Apple does not have total control over their OS all the time, you can change almost everything from terminal or from downloading the application called Secrets. Almost everything that you said was wrong, again.
bayzarea925 7 months ago
@duminicad Get a Mac and you'll understand. Windows 7 is great, I love it, but its like fisher price compared to mac. If you think it should work a certain way on a Mac, it probably does, If you think it should work a certain way on windows, they'll copy Mac in a few years and it might.
Dmhlcmb 7 months ago
@Dmhlcmb I agree on the "copy" scheme, MS is not really "innovative" for the past couple of years... too bad, we need them to compete in order to get the best out of every option(Win, Mac OS, Linux, etc.).
duminicad 7 months ago
iv been using Lion for a day now and i have to say im pretty impressed, but it took a while to get the gestures that way id like them to be. Also the only bug that i managed to find was that sometimes in mission control an open window sometime overlaps the other "desktops" and you can acces them until you make the window smaller.
