I learn something every video I watch! I thought all fan clutches were anit clockwise threads. Good to have those you never know when you need to remove the fan.
@scottykilmer thanx for the reply iv had overheating issues with the car since day one fixed everything else now down to the radiator fan not turning on when its supposed to it only turns on when i do it manually with the defrost iv replaced the radiator fan switch idk if i just bought a bad switch cause if i jump it out from the switch it comes on
my 95 honda civic overheats when sitting still.i noticed when this happens that the fan motor is not engaged.i just replaced the relay, tested the thermostat, and bled the radiator.when it is
overheating i noticed that the top hose is hot and the bottom one is cold,so i felt both top and bottom of the radiator and both places are hot.also, when starting the car cold, sometimes the fan will kick on and do it's job,and sometimes it won't.please help!
This is a great resource for a young DIYer like myself. I have an 02 Jeep Liberty famous for overheating. I can change the fan clutch but I am not sure how to test it. I'm afraid I test it and it turns out to bee something else like a h2o pump, loose belt, fan assembly, head gasket. The radiator is brand new with new dexcool. I guess I'm asking how to isolated the fan clutch as the issue from the other possible issues. Can I measure the air intake? Thank you in advance.-Maurice
@017panda they make air gauges to measure air speed from the fan, but hardly anyone has one. If the engine running doesn't push a ton of air through the fan, replace the clutch.
I do not own a vehicle that uses a fan clutch for the radiator fan but yet I still truly appreciate this video from Scotty Kilmer. i have a 77 camaro lt that has a flex fan. it overheats after short distances. i replaced the water pump ,flushed the whole cooling system and replaced the thermostat it still overheats. should i switch to a clutch fan with hd clutch or could it be something else? its a newly rebuilt 350 (5.7L)
So I have a 98 eclipse and it heats up sitting still and in traffic...but on the highway it stays normal temp but i dont know if it would have that fan clutch on my car
I've replaced the water pump the thermostat months ago the gasket on the thermostat and a upper radiator hose that had a crack in it the cooling fans turn on but the temperature still rises to 3/4 and stops but went into the red 2x before i got home last night (pulled over to let it cool down between). What else could it be there are no leaks.
@jgsilent13 you watch it sitting idling in the driveway, it should come on and off BEFORE the engine temp gets too hot. if it doesn't, they aren't working righrt. Scotty
Scotty, I have a 1992 Ford Explorer Sport 4wd, my inside 4wd light stays on daily, whats wrong, my back wipers stays on daily, whats wrong, a little steam years ago came on my window in front of me, inside. Scotty how do you remove underneath Tire to replace Flat!!! Hey, Thank You, Scotty, Man!!!!!!!
@MrMax4591 there is supposed to be a crank to remove the spare tire, look around. Steam inside if often a leaking heater core. 4WD system is probably shorting out, if it runs fine, leave it alone. Back wiper motor or switch is going bad, I'd just unplug it myself. Scotty
I have a 1998 Chevy Venture 3.4 engine. I would not say it overheats per se, however the needle does have a tendency of going tot he middle and a little bit more when the car stalls. Now, when the van is in motion then the needle moves back to the quarter of the gauge. Quarter as in the cooler side. With my knowledge, I believe this is normal. I would like you to weigh on your expert opinions. Thoughts????
Hey Scotty, my 2002 Jeep Cherokee overheats when I turn the AC on, I had a mechanic look at it, he said I hace to replace the radiator fan, he said it doesn't kick in to a higher speed needed to cool it down, it is a hydraulic and electric fan, what's you take on this?
Scotty I just replaced the fan clutch on my truck. I installed it and it works, i just don't know how it does its job without being connected to a sensor to make it start working. How does a fan clutch work? How does it know when to start doing it's thing?
@moofushu different ones work different ways. If yours has no wires going to it, then it's just hydraulic fluid and a spring inside that reacts to temperature and rotational speed to make the fan spin the correct speed. Scotty
Hey so I have a 2002 Chevy Tahoe 5.3L LS and when ever you turn on the AC and let the car idle it overheats, and when you Accelerate with the AC you hear a loud clapping noise does anybody know if this is the fan clutch or not....HELP!!
Hi Scotty, Have a pickup truck with a Thermal Fan Clutch. 2 weeks ago it started to overheat while idle and would return to normal when driving. I replaced the fan clutch with a new one and also did the water pump. Truck has 102,000 miles. Now it started it repeated itself. Could the fan clutch be bad? Its brand new, box says made in the U.S.A Thermostat and radiator were changed at 60,000 miles or 4 years ago. Any helpful hints? Not losing any coolant. Thanks Scott, have a good labor day
@XYtruck25 yes, aftermarket fan clutches go out all the time. It's bad, OR generally the radiator is bad, those plastic crappers get old and stop dissipating heat correctly with age. scotty
I have a 1997 Sunfire GT, that overheats in traffic, but runs fine on the highway. I took a look, and my fan looks like its' seperate from any belts, meaning it's electronic? It also spins *FREELY* by itself. I assume it needs to be replaced.
@scottykilmer Hey scotty. I checked to see if the motor was bad, and noticed a custom wiring job. The wires go back to a switch on the dashboard, that manually turns the fan on/off. Kind of a pain, because if I forget to turn it off my battery will die. So I'm wondering why they did this? To avoid the cost of replacing the relay? Could there be larger problems?
@shotox21 Yes, I often do that to bypass computer problems and other crap. It works great, simple, and easy to use. Beats paying a ton fixing the computer system. Scotty
Scotty,i own a nissan patrol 1998 model..having overheat problem..while standing the temp goes up n while drving it comes to normal..changed radiator n hoses..wat would u recommend??
Scotty, I recently did a radiator flush on a 1993 camry v6 le and after turning the car on, the temp gauge suddenly spiked to the red. I don't know what else I can do or if there's even a fix for it. thanks for your help.
@sosinceremusic replace the thermostat, and replace the radiator if that doesn't fix it. Flushing radiators does very littel these days in those cheap plastic radiators. Scotty

@harmonicsl Depends where it's plugged, it could plug just at the heater inlet and outlet. But I don't believe anyting guys say, I'd guess bad heater core myself. Scotty
scotty, ive a question.can you reccomend the best in your opinion the best heavy duty rubberized body uundercoating? ive used permatex, and the rust is bleeding through. i went over the frame with a wire brush on a electric drill first, to remove any loose rust.. the vechicle doesnt get driven much, and it is summer. thanks
@harmonicsl Once rust starts, it never stops. Rust proofing is done on new cars to prevent this. Once they start rusting, you can coat em, but the rust will always keep on coming. Scotty
Hey Scotty I drive a 1999 Chevy silverado with about 140000 miles on it when its hot and in stop and go traffic it gets to about 250° not overheating but hot and when you hit the gas hard when its hot I hear the fan spin up and squeal really loud does it need a new fan clutch please reply
@Aviator14 fans are mainly electronic now, controlled by computers. If you still have a belt driven fan, they have fan clutches on them which go bad and then the blade doesn't spin fast enough. Scotty
great vid scotty. the only difference on my older e24 bmw was that the fan clutch bolt turns 'clockwise' to loosen. lefty-tighty, righty-loosey. worth checking out before a job like this.
@nickynick112 Your car is equipped with dual electric fans. Electric fans do not have a clutch on them, there for your problem lies ethier with the fan motors themself (unlikely but not impossible) OR theres an issue with the relay for the fan, perhaps a blown fuse, or the sensor that reads the coolant temp to "tell" the fans to come on. A fan clutch is used only on belt driven fans like this truck in video to control fan speed. The clutch slips when the engine is cold and grips when its hot.
Too bad some poor schmuck is going to get a left handed thread clutch. Can't you see him/her busting their engine parts to pieces when they break a hammer out? And once they do get it out they cuss themselves because when it dropped it hit the radiator punching a hole in it. So they get some stop leak and now they really screwed their heater core and engine up. Those plugged up spots in the engine are now going to get hot causing high NOX. Rock on.
I've had to deal with that chevy fan clutch nut, once just last week, and I couldn't get a hold of the special wrench either time. Without it, the water pump pulley hub just spins when you turn the nut on the fan clutch. Solved it with a 3" c-clamp on, and into, the right side of the pulley hub. The clamp comes into contact with the fin on the water pump (on the 97 and 99 anyway) and stops the hub from turning while you use a 1-1/2" (39mm) wrench to break the nut free and loosen it.
I had the same experience today Scotty, my car started to overheat during traffic..... it was terrible... but i followed your advice and turned on the heater to draw out the hot air. It turned out that the fan motor was bad... had to replace it... altogether it cost me $90 (Singapore Dollars). Your videos can be a lifesave man... Thanks Scotty
@MrNotorius5500 Because it's cheaper to make em the way they always did and not have to redesign them for electrical fans which work better and use less gas. Scotty
hey Scotty. i got a 86 chevy scottsdale V8 305 3-speed that overheats. i got the thermos new, got the timing checked, could it be the timing chain or sumthin. it over heats. and i need to reallly keep the miles off my coballt ss.
@928baller MANY things can cause overheating, it can get really complex. But mainly it's either a leak somewhere, so pressure test the system, OR a bad radiato, which would just need replacing, OR a blowing head gasket, which you check by watching my How to find out if your head gasket is blown Video here on youtube. Scotty
Hey Scotty, i have a 1991 Acura Integra, the radiator coolant keeps dropping low very quickly, i have to check the coolant level everyday, and every time i check the coolant level, it needs to be filled up every time, any suggestions,,,,,,Thanks.
@whakg1 Middle means nothing, that's normal enough. Just always watch for any coolant loss, because if you lose a little, it will run a little hotter. Scotty
scotty, i could not find that tool to remove the fan clutch and the water pump pulley holder, mine is a ford ranger 1997 xl 2wd 3.0, the pump pulley holder i need has to have two pins to hold it in place and place on the back of the pulley, any suggestions or websites you could tell me to get the tool, im stuck, im just pulling resources to do this job, hoping for your kind response,
and last question, do i need to remove the serpentine belt on doing this? thanks!
@wangbungal You don't need to remove the belt, and the tool is sold at any decent auto parts store. I got mine at an OReilly's auto store. Scotty Kilmer
@scottykilmer i went to three auto parts store napa auto zone advance auto parts and they only sell the wrench for 4.9 L engines which so big good to know the serpentine belts
@wangbungal some cars you do need to remove it , some you don't. And some have wires connected, such as mercedes, but most have none and are just mechanical. Scotty Kilmer
@scottykilmer Engine rev is a function of mechanical design, an engine can only rev to its designed limits, so if you go beyond that, you end up with a large expensive paperweight when it blows up. Scotty Kilmer
Great video, but would if you have a 94 jeep 4.0 and the dealership says 220-230 degree is normal. boiling is 212.I was looking for way's to cool engine down ,the only thing i can think of is mounting air scope on the hood, wich way to face it'?I don't know ,either let air in or let air out .radiator, water pump and Anti freeze is new my goal is to save gas money Scotty Kilmer what would you do?
@coldpak82 I don't know what kind of set up that year has for a fan, but you can always remove whatever it has and put a BIG electrical fan on the radiator, and wire it to run all the time the engine is running. I've done that in the past and achieved great results. Scotty Kilmer
@ScottyKilmer Can you make a video on how to take off fan clutches for chevy's and fords using the air impact hammer adapter wrench. Because I don't exactly remember which ones have the threads clockwise vs. counterclockwise. Big fan of your videos I think I've seen'em all. - Chad Taki

@wesbuell18 OH, definitely a carb engine. Every once in a while I get talked into working on an oldster, and the first thing I do is throw a brand new Edelbrock carb on any American V8. They run great, and are simple to install. Fuel injection systems are expensive, complex, and on older cars, very hard to get good parts for. Scotty Kilmer
@scottykilmer i have a 1988 chevy half ton short wheel based truck and i'm wondering wat r the steps to make it a carb engine it has a 305 efi engine and i love carb engines
Scotty I was wondering what obd2 code reader you recommend for the would be do it yourselves like us. A better question would be if you know of a way to rip out those computers on our cars and still have them run!
@moofushu Na, they won't run without computers, they're indispensable these days. That Actron scanner I use in some clips, the orange one, is good for do it yourselfers, they sell various versions of it at Auto Zones. Scotty Kilmer
@jonjeny Ah, you noticed. OK, you want the truth. The truth is I showed you how to replace a fan clutch. BUT, the fan clutch on the chevy I was working on really didn't have any problems, I was just using it as an illustration. So I really just bolted the old fan clutch back on. Scotty Kilmer
@mobes329 Yes, it was a demonstration. I was actually putting a water pump on this chevy, but I already made a water pump video, so I thought I'd make a fan clutch video for something new. Scotty Kilmer
@Matthew55904 No, the fan clutch is a hydraulic/mechanical device to operate the cooling fan behind the radiator. When they wear out, they no longer suck enough air to cool the engine at low speeds. Scotty Kilmer
@scottykilmer my car has 2 fans 1 is a big huge fan about 3-4 inches thick and a smaller fan about 3-5 inches shorter and like 2-3 inches thick why 2 fans and why 2 radiators?
@Matthew55904 ONe fan is for the radiator, one is for the Ac condenser. The "radiator that is smaller is not a radiator for the engine, it is the condenser for the AC system Scotty
It looks like someone changed the water pump on the truck and didn't have the right tools. There's a couple marks where an air chisel was used on the old fan clutch. Still better to use the spanner and wrench.
@DieselCrawler86 Who knows, it's a pig sty and most people, like my wife, would be offended. Perhaps one day I'll be on that cable show "Hoarders." Scotty Kilmer
Good video Scotty..You never stop learning when it comes to cars..I've seen that tool around the shop but never knew what it was for and everybody i asked didn't know either..Now i know it goes into those holes in the water pump pulley. Thanks Scotty for sharing your knowledge..
@fordbroncodave Yes, but normally they just wear out and don't suck air enough. Rarely do they lock up anymore, they often so cheaply made they barely even work out of the box if you get a chinese made one. Scotty Kilmer
I learn something every video I watch! I thought all fan clutches were anit clockwise threads. Good to have those you never know when you need to remove the fan.

Thanks Scotty

hey scotty, how can you actually tell if the clutch is hammered ??
whats a good way to test the clutch??
RAJSTA81 11 months ago
Not to be rude but you shoud get a workshop or someplace inside to work.
Reparing cars on dirt and gravel cant be easy with screws, parts and fluids on the ground.

I see. Do you think you can do a video on how to convert a vehicle equipped with a fan clutch to use an aftermarket electric cooling fan?
MrNotorius5500 1 year ago
@MrNotorius5500 I make videos as I fix actual cars. If I get one like that, sure, I'll film it. Scotty
scottykilmer 1 year ago
Scotty, something I've always wondered... why do late model trucks still use fan clutches while most late model cars use electric fans?
MrNotorius5500 1 year ago
@MrNotorius5500 Because it's cheaper to make em the way they always did and not have to redesign them for electrical fans which work better and use less gas. Scotty
scottykilmer 1 year ago
@scottykilmer Also pickup engines are straight and most car engines are sideways engines. Plus car engine compartments have less room.

hey Scotty. i got a 86 chevy scottsdale V8 305 3-speed that overheats. i got the thermos new, got the timing checked, could it be the timing chain or sumthin. it over heats. and i need to reallly keep the miles off my coballt ss.
928baller 1 year ago
@928baller MANY things can cause overheating, it can get really complex. But mainly it's either a leak somewhere, so pressure test the system, OR a bad radiato, which would just need replacing, OR a blowing head gasket, which you check by watching my How to find out if your head gasket is blown Video here on youtube. Hey Scotty, i have a 1991 Acura Integra, the radiator coolant keeps dropping low very quickly, i have to check the coolant level everyday, and every time i check the coolant level, it needs to be filled up every time, any suggestions,,,,,,Thanks.

hey scotty , i have a mercedes 88 420sel the tep is getting to the midle on the gage in traffic is that normal cause it never did that before?
thanks
whakg1 1 year ago
@whakg1 Middle means nothing, that's normal enough. Just always watch for any coolant loss, because if you lose a little, it will run a little hotter. Scotty

scotty, i could not find that tool to remove the fan clutch and the water pump pulley holder, mine is a ford ranger 1997 xl 2wd 3.0, the pump pulley holder i need has to have two pins to hold it in place and place on the back of the pulley, any suggestions or websites you could tell me to get the tool, im stuck, im just pulling resources to do this job, hoping for your kind response,
and last question, do i need to remove the serpentine belt on doing this? thanks!
wangbungal 1 year ago
@wangbungal You don't need to remove the belt, and the tool is sold at any decent auto parts store. I got mine at an OReilly's auto store. Scotty Kilmer
scottykilmer 1 year ago
@scottykilmer i went to three auto parts store napa auto zone advance auto parts and they only sell the wrench for 4.9 L engines which so big good to know the serpentine belts
wangbungal 1 year ago
do you still need to remove the fan shroud to remove the fan clutch? is there any hoses or wires connected to a fan clutch?
wangbungal 1 year ago
@wangbungal some cars you do need to remove it , some you don't. And some have wires connected, such as mercedes, but most have none and are just mechanical. Scotty Kilmer

@kerbao Yes, I fix my own motorycycles, but since japanese bikes rarely break down, not much chance of me fixing them. Scotty Kilmer
scottykilmer 1 year ago
@scottykilmer Engine rev is a function of mechanical design, an engine can only rev to its designed limits, so if you go beyond that, you end up with a large expensive paperweight when it blows up. Scotty Kilmer

Great video, but would if you have a 94 jeep 4.0 and the dealership says 220-230 degree is normal. boiling is 212.I was looking for way's to cool engine down ,the only thing i can think of is mounting air scope on the hood, wich way to face it'?I don't know ,either let air in or let air out .radiator, water pump and Anti freeze is new my goal is to save gas money Scotty Kilmer what would you do?
coldpak82 1 year ago
@coldpak82 I don't know what kind of set up that year has for a fan, but you can always remove whatever it has and put a BIG electrical fan on the radiator, and wire it to run all the time the engine is running. I've done that in the past and achieved great results. Scotty Kilmer

@ScottyKilmer Can you make a video on how to take off fan clutches for chevy's and fords using the air impact hammer adapter wrench. Because I don't exactly remember which ones have the threads clockwise vs. counterclockwise. Big fan of your videos I think I've seen'em all. - Chad Taki

@scottykilmer i'm wondering whats easier to fix a efi engine or a carb engine?
wesbuell18 1 year ago
@wesbuell18 OH, definitely a carb engine. Every once in a while I get talked into working on an oldster, and the first thing I do is throw a brand new Edelbrock carb on any American V8. They run great, and are simple to install. Fuel injection systems are expensive, complex, and on older cars, very hard to get good parts for. Scotty Kilmer

@scottykilmer i have a 1988 chevy half ton short wheel based truck and i'm wondering wat r the steps to make it a carb engine it has a 305 efi engine and i love carb engines
wesbuell18 1 year ago
@wesbuell18 You would have to change the intake manifold and the fuel pump, I've done tons of em. Scotty

@moofushu Na, they won't run without computers, they're indispensable these days. That Actron scanner I use in some clips, the orange one, is good for do it yourselfers, they sell various versions of it at Auto Zones. Scotty Kilmer

scotty: why not use the new bolt given on the new fan clutch instead of using the old bolth?
jonjeny 1 year ago
@jonjeny Ah, you noticed. OK, you want the truth. The truth is I showed you how to replace a fan clutch. BUT, the fan clutch on the chevy I was working on really didn't have any problems, I was just using it as an illustration. So I really just bolted the old fan clutch back on. Scotty Kilmer
scottykilmer 1 year ago
Hey Scotty was this just a demo ? I see that you put the same fan clutch back on .?
mobes329 1 year ago
@mobes329 Yes, it was a demonstration. I was actually putting a water pump on this chevy, but I already made a water pump video, so I thought I'd make a fan clutch video for something new. Scotty Kilmer
scottykilmer 1 year ago
@scottykilmer HA! I though t I noticed that the Fan Clutch going on was a little dirty, not shiny like the new one!
newengland72 1 year ago
wats a fan clutch is that the electric fan motor?
Matthew55904 1 year ago
@Matthew55904 No, the fan clutch is a hydraulic/mechanical device to operate the cooling fan behind the radiator. When they wear out, they no longer suck enough air to cool the engine at low speeds. Scotty Kilmer
scottykilmer 1 year ago
@scottykilmer my car has 2 fans 1 is a big huge fan about 3-4 inches thick and a smaller fan about 3-5 inches shorter and like 2-3 inches thick why 2 fans and why 2 radiators?
Matthew55904 1 year ago
@Matthew55904 ONe fan is for the radiator, one is for the Ac condenser. The "radiator that is smaller is not a radiator for the engine, it is the condenser for the AC system Scotty
scottykilmer 1 year ago
@scottykilmer i thought the condenser was belt-driven i didnt know it was a radiator so what fan is for the AC the big one or the small one

It looks like someone changed the water pump on the truck and didn't have the right tools. There's a couple marks where an air chisel was used on the old fan clutch. Still better to use the spanner and wrench.

a stiff fan clutch can rob hp and gas milage too. also check to make sure it isn't locked solid or very stiff.
fordbroncodave 1 year ago
@fordbroncodave Yes, but normally they just wear out and don't suck air enough. Rarely do they lock up anymore, they often so cheaply made they barely even work out of the box if you get a chinese made one. Scotty Kilmer
scottykilmer 1 year ago
@scottykilmer if you don't drive it often they do tend to lock up and not spin well. can you drop oil in it to get it to loosen or no?
fordbroncodave 1 year ago
@fordbroncodave NO, the oil is internal and you shouldn't mess with it. Just replace it if it's bad. Scotty Kilmer
