A correction to the correction. The march is titled "Hail Columbia" not "O Columbia". What is referred to as the so called "First Constitution" is actually the "Articles of Confederation" of 1781. The one and only Constitution of the United States was adopted on September 17, 1787 and ratified in 1789.
Funny... this flag shown is the flag that flew over Fort McHenry during the war of 1812. This flag, known as the Fort McHenry flag, goes by another name: the original Star Spangled Banner of Francis Scott Key's song.
1. Only the 1st verse is ever sung so it doesn't actually make sense.
2. The melody and lyrics don't mesh and rather then finding (or better yet creating) a melody that fits, they butcher the lyrics o the singing and melody match.
The SSB is a kick ass song (it's about a bunch of unwashed pirates handing the Royal Navy it's ass :p), it just needs to sung right and in full.
@AGTLI Africans? You mean "African Protectorates of Britain, France, Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Italy, and Germany"? We were the best large country following WWI since Europe was on the brink of Bankruptcy and revolution, nationalism grew in colonies and civil unrest was problematic in China. If you take this into account, we were a great country. Even before WWI we were the largest industrial power. Compare today, an over militarized, in-debt country thats pretty much owned by China.
@SniperWarfareOhio During the early Republic Americans were being ENSLAVED BY AFRICANS, so my point stands. ;) Before the Great War we were a major REGIONAL power but nothing more and today America is owned by Americans. ;) The Fed's #1 creditor is, well, the Fed followed by the American people, China is a distant 3rd but the nationalists like to exaggerate as it helps them amass more power.
Correction: This song, "O Columbia!", was written **IN 1789** for the inauguration of George Washington, first president under the second US constitution; and was de facto national anthem, 1789 (NOT 1777) until 1931, when Congress made "The Star-Spangled Banner" the official anthem.

No disrespect to Francis Scott Key, but I like this Anthem better than the Star Spangled Banner.
It was good enough for Abe Lincoln, it's good enough for me =/

Hail, Columbia should be reinstated again as our national anthem. It is far more pleasant than the Star Spangled Banner.
Snicklefritz1979 5 months ago
@Snicklefritz1979 2 reasons for that:
1. Only the 1st verse is ever sung so it doesn't actually make sense.
2. The melody and lyrics don't mesh and rather then finding (or better yet creating) a melody that fits, they butcher the lyrics o the singing and melody match.

Correction: This song, "O Columbia!", was written **IN 1789** for the inauguration of George Washington, first president under the second US constitution; and was de facto national anthem, 1789 (NOT 1777) until 1931, when Congress made "The Star-Spangled Banner" the official anthem.
Additional:
1776 - Declaration of Independence
1777 - 1st constitution proposed
1781 - 1st const. ratified
1787 - 2nd constitution proposed
1788 - 2nd const. ratified
4 March 1789 - 2nd const. takes effect
