I am a huge fan of Ilayaraja compositions. I like Rahman composing too. But...
If i will ever bow down to one musician it is Ilayaraja.
But my point here is.....
Why should we fight over one ilayaraja and one rahman if we could have hundreds of ilayarajas and rahmans with far superior talents...! How can we get them...?
We must include music as one of our school subject like science and math.
Because this is the land of music & the land of gods (There is a saying "music is very near to god")

For all you know, someone that knows MSV's and IR's period who know them, might give so many other instances of MSV's shadow hoverin over IR's music!

All these are just a little bit similar. They don't sound the same. So you can't call these a copy. I won't rule out inspiration though. Btw, some can be commercially available loops. And also, some of you claims that the music was inspired was nothing but non sense. You say it's an inspiration just because the tempo, pitch and rhythm is same.

I am guessing you would give a level 10, comparing compositions of Sri Tyagaraja and Sri muthuswamy dixitar based on the same raga. Songs are intellectual property, raagas/tunes are not.
Very good work. But I bet mere waste of time. You could do another comparison of IR songs itself with his own compositions, and you would find more than this. MUSIC cannot be made without inspirations. Then we should do another comparison of IR with previous music directors. IR was good in 80s and 90s, and this is AR's time, 60s were KV Mahadevan. So there is no one GOD of music at any point of time. GROW UP KID and appreciate all the music

MSV, IR, ARR's music takes the base from Indian Carnatic, where you can change the thala and modify the raga slightly, so it will look a like, the best is the one who can create fine music with combining more than one type, I feel all these 3 are great, we shouldn't compare flight with bus or train, though all carrying passangers, they are different.. ilayaraja doesnt listen to story of the movie he simply gives them some tunes but AR Rahman takes too much of time and tries his level best to give the appropriate music for that particular context. i can give you big list of movies which were superhit just because of the brilliant music , even if the movie is not so good, ppl say you can watch the movie once to listen the songs.
AR RAHMAN 's music is always the best thats why he has reached hollywood and oscars.

Let me remind everyone that in the 70s and 80s when even South Indians were listening to the evergreen Hindi melodies, Raja was the one who made us turn to Tamil music, and ARR has continued from where Raja left, i.e., to make the whole world listen to Tamil music.
Well, I have to insist that IR has been a Maestro for years and with 900+ films, its extremely difficult for any composer not to resemble IR, let alone ARR. Both r geniuses to have been born here and lets enjoy their music. Its like comparing Sachin with Lara. They r both great, with different techniques, styles, etc. They add comfort to me when Im sad, give company when Im happy, and sing for me when I travel alone. So why fight over insignificant things?
Arrogant or not Raja is natural talent mostly self thought. The way he understands music, makes him look like arrogant. He was playing second fiddle to his elder brother in village performance and CPIM political meetings during his younger days to earn a pittance. With such humble background he is indeed a gifted musician along side Mozart and Thyagaraja. The new genre synthetic phony music makes you sick and tired after a while.
ok thats a good collection of songs and appreciate the effort put it.. but U need to understand there are2 different parts to a song.. one is the raaga & the other the music... there are only 64 or something raagas (im not sure about the number) so songs will invariably be similar to one another a music director excels in using different thalam or beats and when they are similar thats when U can deem them as being copied. I hope others would agree too. Im not being partial to anyone.
All I can say AR and IR are men of highest order. IR born in to poor rural dalit family went on to become a pure genius with his hard work. I sometimes doubt if he is really a man who composed every note of his music for 500 movies in less than 12 years.
AR on the other hand is an inspiration for all to think big, grand and innovative. He is a lesson that with change of times, one should change and do not stick to the same things.

Now shall I prove that *all* of Illayaraja's songs are inspired form Thyagaraja-dikhshitar et. al. ?? What you don't understand is that these are basic sancharas of each raga. The ragas have certain path thru which they will flow.
For eg: inbathai karu aakinal... is basic ananthabhairavi sanchara...many many keerthanas follow the same flow. Wud u say Illayaraja *copied* that?

And not just that, these tunes must have been in his mind somewhr coz he himself must have played for Ilayaraja's music....after ARR became music director....when he creates muisc, these tunes must have influenced him subconsciously without knowing thr were songs which were similar to the songs he created.
It was a nice vid....these songs does sounds similar...but, ARR had worked for Ilayaraja before he became a music director....there is a possibility that ARR himself have helped Ilayaraja to compose some of his musics when he was working for him.

People call IR arrogant not because he is arrogant to the core but because he doesn't allow anybody to change his notes however great the other person may be. Every tune, every note by IR was produced in his brain alone. Even the punnagai mannan theme was composed by IR and arranged by AR. (courtesy: an interview with AR)

I've heard that Ilayaraja composes right in front of everbody whereas Rehman goes inside, shut the door close to make "things" happen. So different ways of composing. How can you compare them? :P

In fact IR himself has accepted that the song "vaa vennila .. unnaithaane.." from mellathirandathu kadavu, was inspired by MSV'scomposition "Vaan methile.." very publicly in a stage show!

All these are just a little bit similar. They don't sound the same. So you can't call these a copy. I won't rule out inspiration though. Btw, some can be commercially available loops. And also, some of you claims that the music was inspired was nothing but non sense. You say it's an inspiration just because the tempo, pitch and rhythm is same.

Very good work. But I bet mere waste of time. You could do another comparison of IR songs itself with his own compositions, and you would find more than this. MUSIC cannot be made without inspirations. Then we should do another comparison of IR with previous music directors. IR was good in 80s and 90s, and this is AR's time, 60s were KV Mahadevan. So there is no one GOD of music at any point of time. GROW UP KID and appreciate all the music

MSV, IR, ARR's music takes the base from Indian Carnatic, where you can change the thala and modify the raga slightly, so it will look a like, the best is the one who can create fine music with combining more than one type, I feel all these 3 are great, we shouldn't compare flight with bus or train, though all carrying passangers, they are different.. ilayaraja doesnt listen to story of the movie he simply gives them some tunes but AR Rahman takes too much of time and tries his level best to give the appropriate music for that particular context. i can give you big list of movies which were superhit just because of the brilliant music , even if the movie is not so good, ppl say you can watch the movie once to listen the songs.

Well, I have to insist that IR has been a Maestro for years and with 900+ films, its extremely difficult for any composer not to resemble IR, let alone ARR. Both r geniuses to have been born here and lets enjoy their music. Its like comparing Sachin with Lara. They r both great, with different techniques, styles, etc. They add comfort to me when Im sad, give company when Im happy, and sing for me when I travel alone. So why fight over insignificant things?

Arrogant or not Raja is natural talent mostly self thought. The way he understands music, makes him look like arrogant. He was playing second fiddle to his elder brother in village performance and CPIM political meetings during his younger days to earn a pittance. With such humble background he is indeed a gifted musician along side Mozart and Thyagaraja. The new genre synthetic phony music makes you sick and tired after a while.

ok thats a good collection of songs and appreciate the effort put it.. but U need to understand there are2 different parts to a song.. one is the raaga & the other the music... there are only 64 or something raagas (im not sure about the number) so songs will invariably be similar to one another a music director excels in using different thalam or beats and when they are similar thats when U can deem them as being copied. I hope others would agree too. Im not being partial to anyone.

All I can say AR and IR are men of highest order. IR born in to poor rural dalit family went on to become a pure genius with his hard work. I sometimes doubt if he is really a man who composed every note of his music for 500 movies in less than 12 years.
AR on the other hand is an inspiration for all to think big, grand and innovative. He is a lesson that with change of times, one should change and do not stick to the same things.

You are all going wrong. You all compare ARR and IR, not with an academic/research perspective but with a stupid goal of answering the question - who is greater? who is bigger? etc.
These questions don't go anywhere except bring animosity between composers fans and
also composers themselves. One should understand that IR and AR lived at different times, their working environments were different, their lives were different, technology was different, their inspirations were different so on.

Now shall I prove that *all* of Illayaraja's songs are inspired form Thyagaraja-dikhshitar et. al. ?? What you don't understand is that these are basic sancharas of each raga. The ragas have certain path thru which they will flow.
For eg: inbathai karu aakinal... is basic ananthabhairavi sanchara...many many keerthanas follow the same flow. Wud u say Illayaraja *copied* that?

And not just that, these tunes must have been in his mind somewhr coz he himself must have played for Ilayaraja's music....after ARR became music director....when he creates muisc, these tunes must have influenced him subconsciously without knowing thr were songs which were similar to the songs he created.

It was a nice vid....these songs does sounds similar...but, ARR had worked for Ilayaraja before he became a music director....there is a possibility that ARR himself have helped Ilayaraja to compose some of his musics when he was working for him.

@iamvegeta2008 I don't agree with you at all. There is no way that AR helped IR compose . People call IR arrogant not because he is arrogant to the core but because he doesn't allow anybody to change his notes however great the other person may be. Every tune, every note by IR was produced in his brain alone. Even the punnagai mannan theme was composed by IR and arranged by AR. (courtesy: an interview with AR)

I have listened to both Ilayaraja's as well as Rehman's songs. You are comparing apples with oranges. Simply put there can't be any comparisons.
I've heard that Ilayaraja composes right in front of everbody whereas Rehman goes inside, shut the door close to make "things" happen. So different ways of composing. How can you compare them? :P

I do nt know why there are people like this, and it seems particular Indians are out there 2 condem all the music directors, that they are copying tunes, sounds frm other songs or compositions. Wat are u up 2 guys? Nothing else better 2 do? Get a life.. Dont u guys really want 2 enjoy listening to your songs, but spending so much time finding faults? I rather enjoy listening then condemning others. Learn to appreciate, not all of us are talented like them these genius. Try composing a tune n see

I agree with certain things. but, you have used most carefull language by mentioning it resembles and not as copied. This usage of language itself shows that you dont have enough courage to blame Arr. Having said that what i noticed from this is you follow both the music directors composition. Great Job

The comparision is totally wrong... music is composed of raagas and person who did this have no idea of what music is...he is thinking that if same instruments are used, it is copied!!

wy do we ve this comparison actually goin...? both are good composers.. an it is natural tat when a particular composition of the other strikes one composer he is bound to use it if he feels its appropriate... both Maestro and ARR are good in their own way...its the music tat matters.. no competition pls...

I think you are so vetti. Let me tell you with an example. Music could be compared with Cooking. Say, you make some nice dish. Is it like you made it from some XYZ thing from Mars. Nope, its just the same, what everyone else uses. RIght !. The Magic lies in your creativity. How you spice it up. Progressing in your way, even dappankuthu can be compared with MJ and you could create more videos blaming all the great people.

why u ppl make petty arguments over this.both maestros learnt how to play with instruments during their time period from the same school of music-Trinity college of music.acc to me, ARR maestro can be termed as update.They both gave lovely forms of music.Both have similarities and differences.its absurd to compare them both cos before arr came with synthesizer here, it was originated in london.they are 2 geniuses who knew how to please tamil film industry & play with our musical instruments

You are saying this is similar.? If you can take these are inspirations, then you can even find, Ilayaraja also heavily inspired by A R Rahman songs. These are raagas dude... Yes, Ilayaraja is good at his time.. BUT you cant deny his flops are too many compared to A R Rahman and other musicians. So, we may say that his failure rate is very high. A Dictionary must not have failures. You have done an useless job which only Ilayaraja's fanatics appreciate even if they know you are bullshitting.!!
