Thorpe was better. Phelps really hasnt had anyone to compete with, whilst thorpe's competiton was alot tougher... phelps is still great but i think if thorpe still had the passion for swimming and breaking records... then itd be more interesting.

Yes, but Spitz won his gold medals in only two strokes, while Phelps won them doing all four- butterfly, crawl, backstroke and breaststroke. That is more impressive, IMO.
