  • Maybe you don't want limit juries to people with lots of free time and nothing better to do. People with lots of free time and nothing to do are often mouth breathing idiots that I would not want influencing my future. Just a thought.

    The phrase compulsory service has a synonym in a single word: slavery. A free society cannot contain slaves.

  • Thank you, Diana Hsieh! I have gotten into arguments with my fellow Objectivists over this issue.

    I am a tremendous admirer of Dr. Peikoff, and was terribly disappointed in the answer he gave to that question. We need a military to defend freedom. But saying, "What if not enough people volunteer to serve in the army?" is no justification for the draft. By the same token, compulsory jury "duty" is involuntary servitude.
