These rounds can be bought online for $15-$17, include shipping and you're still abunch jack ass greedy rich folk selling old ass ammo from 10 to 15 years old and market high prices. Only buy new production or cheap milsurp
This bullet is a huge rippoff ... they stil want like $18-$20 for a box of 50. Yeah right! Even bitter root V. And remington umc are superior. Don't buy these if you see them, tell federal to quit ripping off the consumer and start selling hydra's&HST's to the public in "BULK" and better price's .jack ass's!!
That's a little harsh, the hotter 9mm loads hit about 400 ft-lbs muzzle energy, over halfway between the .38 Special and the .357 Mag. In short barrels the 9mm actually gets very close to what the .357 does because it's more efficient. Check out Ballistics By The Inch and look at .357 versus 9mm in 2" barrels, you'll be stunned.
What to use in a 9mm carbine (16" barrel) for HD? Please name a few. Or a "best". The more I investigate, the more confused. What do you consider a solid and dependable HP load?
@machineguntongue With handguns most would say use a heavy load for penetration. With a carbine you have a bit more velocity to work with. I would say that a Federal +P+ 115 Gr. would rock in a carbine length barrel with enough of a velocity gain to equal a .357 Mag round. I have a chronograph now so I will try to test a few loads from a handgun and then from the carbine to check the velocity gain. Top loads IMO Winchester Ranger-T, Federal HST, Speer Gold Dot, Corbon DPX.
I just bought a box of these for cheap to be used for home defense, but I'm concerned that them breaking apart like that is less than ideal. Can you comment on whether this is something to worry about. I know little about hollow points and bullet retention. I think I should pick up some other brand of ammo. Maybe Winchester Rangers of some sort? I'm not too jazzed about +P+ but am willing to run +P through my gun. Thanks for any answers!
@TurdrollerI think they would do just fine until you can find some better ammo. This ammo was top of the line 20 years ago. More modern designs (HST, Ranger-T, etc.) now exist. I would use a round that holds together for better penetration. I am sure these would be adequate in a self-defense situation, it is just that there are now better choices available.

@Blahblobify Using the term "hot load" while trying to defend the homo 9mm is about as homo as it can get.

@NowLifeStarts yea, well when you eat one you can have "killed by a homo caliber" carved on your headstone.

@twinpeninsulas 9mm's don't hurt. Trust me I know, which is I why I can call them a homo round. 9mm is for HOMO's. Come out of the closet!

Thanks for the info! Have you guys tried a test with a 5 gallon bucket full of clay?
Derail07 2 years ago
FYI, Search "Ballistics Test (2 of 6) .380" to see a clay expansion test
Derail07 2 years ago
We have not tried that yet. Good idea for future tests...
