After discovering Patty on You Tube, I purchased her CD "A Kiss in Time" and went to see her in concert when she toured with Emmy Lou and Shawn Colvin. I often use You tube when deciding which CD or DVD to purchase next. THis is a great medium for artists to get their music to the masses. That's my thought.
i'm from Pittsburgh and she sells out FAST here. i have all her cd'ssand some bootlegs and i still go see her every chance i get. what a treasure she is!!!
I've been to Patty Griffin concerts in both Chicago and Pittsburgh, and they were always sold out shows. They were also excellent shows. She is a spectacular singer and songwriter and I will happily pay to see her anytime she's within reach. And when she chooses to publish DVDs of her shows, I will gladly buy them as well. These clips on YouTube aren't going to deter me in any way. If anything, they serve to remind me of just what an amazing artist she really is.
Patty Griffin is an artist who performs below the radar, but what a radar, she is a jewel that has not been mined yet. Keep her this way, for she does not know what awaits her at the top. She is amazing, and her music is heard by those who chose to dig. BEAUTIFUL
I guess I should have noticed years ago how much Emmylou influenced Patti Griffin. This is almost an impersonation with her sitting right next to Emmy. That all being said they all sound shrill, nasally, and out of tune, par for the course. Barely getting but a few notes. Ah to be an elite folkie the ultimate career. The collaborative talents of these four people almost overshadows theirmusic talents
Thank you so much for posting this! I'd give anything to attend one of these shows, but they are nowhere near me. This is one my favorite songs of all time.
What a lovely video! I just witnessed them (3 Girls and their Buddy) on their second night of their national tour at The Birchmere in Alexandria, VA on Feb. 4. This song was their second & final encore, and it brought tears to my eyes! All 3 girls sounded like angels in the harmony part of the chorus. And Patty Griffin is the most amazing and diverse folk singer on the scene today.
Wow - your reply was really rude. I just meant to add that it was about her grandmother. I wasn't meaning to be confrontational. But I think the use of Jesus's mother is literary more than she is singing about Jesus's mother. So while Moby-Dick might be a metaphor and a whale second, I think the virgin Mary is a metaphor second to motherhood, and to her grandmother specifically.
Furthermore, my point that it was about her grandmother only reinforced yours that it's not about filicide.
Thank you for posting this video. I saw 3 Girls and their Buddy in Cleveland, it was incredible. They performed "Mary" as an encore,it was beautiful. Thank you for your documentation of one of their incredible performances of this song.
There were lots of signs at this concert saying not to record any portion of the show. If you are truly a a fan, you will remove this video from YouTube since it is a theft of their intellectual property.
Thank you for your impassioned attempt to enlighten me, but you may want to check your ticket stub for restrictions, or the actual taping policies of the artists.
It's unfortunate you don't see how this clip helps promote the artists and Roanoke. That said if management suddenly reverses and decides they no longer support online artist promotion, the fans would capitulate.
In the meantime, while you wait for such action, I suggest you go get a nice glass of wine and listen to Patty.
You're right, they are new artists and need you to help "promote" their music. Nice rationalization. I love Patty but I will pay to listen to her and all other artists.
If you think these artists don't need promotion, perhaps you didn't notice which dates on this tour did not sell out their venues.
Tours are the lifeblood of interaction with fans as well as a primary revenue source. This video and others will hopefully encourage more people to go to their shows. I'm not sure why you would think sharing this video would be a mercenary action. You'll be aghast at the tape trading community these artists have fostered over the years.
Any idea where to buy the DVD? That's how I stumbled across this YouTube video, but I would really like to buy the DVD (if there is one). If anyone knows where I can find it, please reply to this post.

The lyrics remind me of Marybeth Tinning. She killed 9 of her own children. She was from New York I believe.

Will you please stop posting this gruesome sh*t on all the comment sections for the different versions of this song!
"Jesus says mother I couldn't stay another day longer
Flys right by me and leaves a kiss upon her face
While the angels are singing his praises in a blaze of glory
Mary stays behind and starts cleaning up the place"
This song is about Motherhood in general, and the Madonna, mother of Jesus, in particular. It's not about some filicide.
Please respect it as such.

Actually, it's about her grandmother. She introduces it as such.

Yeah, and "Moby Dick" is about a white whale, at a certain level. Cheers.

Check out Ariana Gillis... she's only 16 and she's already writing amazing songs at this level.

I'm soooo sad I'm not on the cruise with her, Emmy Lou, and Shawn Colvin right now!! Damn, being a poor artist really sucks sometimes.

Thanks for the video... we went to the concert on the 19th... this is like an extra encore - frosting on the cake!
Patty was a 'force of nature' that night... all 4 of them were superb - over 2 hours nonstop and 3 encores - and now a 4th! Thanks again!
