A nice guy and seriously deserved more than just 2 wins with Ferrari. I think he was incredibly unlucky in 1983 and it was sad when he was dropped by Ferrari. If he had more luck in 1983 it could have gone either way with him or Arnoux being dropped (assuming Arnoux had a one year contract). -Daz in Oz.
Patrik maybe you forget in 1982 you had the 27 Number. Gilles's number. It should bu a legendary nuber but wasn't Gilles died and not Win F1 1982 Championship
Thanks !! i was 8 years old when i saw him at Monza in 1982 whit Mario Andretti on the second Ferrari he was a great driver all Italians loves him he got the hard charge to replace Gilles , a mission impossible.
tambay joined ferrari in 1982, replacing villeneuve who was tragically killed at zolder. It wasn't an easy situation but he did a very good job, winning at hockenheim and helping ferrari win the constructors' title. his calming personality was just what the scuderia needed.
he had a really good chance of becoming 1983 champion but faded badly towards the end and arnoux became the main man.
You're wrong! Tambay lead at more GPs than Arnoux in '83 and qualyfied better too, and was more regular (only 9 points less). He just had a lot of failures and pure bad luck and while, yes, he wasn't the most aggressive driver, he rarely made a mistake and was very fast. .
quite good but its a good job he got out when he did. look at how other drivers from that era ended up. im not making a comparisons0 between drivers but look at how arnoux ended up and the like. pt was a racer of the early 80's but yet in his prime he could do hardly anything. the story with a lot of drivers but he got drives from the best teams of the day. well ferrari was ok at the time but others would beat their monkey to get his cv.
From what i have read, Engineers found out a month after that Grand Prix that Piquet's was going to expire and blow up anyway so even if Salazar didn't crash into him, Tambay still would have won.
@Rodrigo121 Yeah, I think that was the first F1 UFC fight wasn't it? The Octagon at Hockenheim! LOL Salazar was such a wank, amazes me still how he ever got a ride in a mail truck let alone in an F1 car... Money talks I suppose

They said Patrick Tambay was a fine driver but the biggest fault he had was he was a too nice guy and not aggressive enough in races.
He had a good Ferrari in 1983 but Arnoux made easy work of him.

Another driver who was at the wrong place at the wrong time. A true gentleman, but not world class but a great technician.
