Yeah, I wish I knew what it would take to get this man to play in public. Maybe he does...but I don't know think so. Maybe he's just smart and knows that entering the business would mean giving a part of his being he doesn't want given away. In any case, I am grateful to have his music, here.
All your Nick Drake covers are brilliant! This song especially, moves me deeply. Just uploaded a cover of it myself if you're interested in watching. Thanks again for your talent and great covers!
I am a huge fan of Nick Drake .. too bad he died young .. but thank god u are almost his reincarnation .. wish i could learn to play his songs from u .. i salute you
What is that guitar and what gives it that deep rich sound? Is it rosewood back and sides? And what is the top wood? It sounds wonderful. Isn't it sad that there are no videos of Nick Drake performing? You seem to replicate him best. Thanks
Your videos inspire me :) For someone with far less skill on the Acoustic what would you suggest is a good Nick Drake cover to start tackling ? I'm used to playing with a pick but am learning fingers but that's obviously a bit more patting your head and rubbing your stomach at the same time if you know what I mean ;)
how did you get that guitar to sound so damn good? That album brings me back to my childhood and you've done it justice with that cover. Good job man.
I've only just discovered Nick Drake and you cover him better than anybody. I've watched most of your Nick Drake covers and they're all wonderful. What kind of guitar are you playing. It's little, but it has mighty sound. I went to the Nick Drake site to get the tunings and I've learned this song by watching you. Thanks for posting.
What year is that guitar? And more importantly, do you put any effects on the guitar, or are all your recordings JUST the natural the sound of the guitar?
I love your version too. I don't know how you were able to replicate every little nuance both vocally and w/ the guitar. Your fx even sound similar. I can tell you love the song, and that is the most important, I think..
In front of the third, behind the fourth (so bass E becomes G sharp)?? I can see from other posts you use non=standard tunings so wondered if for this song you not only had the capo but also had a different tuning.
@plectrum34 Amazing man! You are so intense .... a good trait to have when developing talents. All of your Nick Drake posts are right on, but no one can see into your soul ... it's like we're looking into a robot. Let your face and body reflect WHY you took the time to master this artist ... as you evidently have! I would love to hear form you in the future!
Heh, your singing is actually smoother than Nick Drake's own was on the album, to me.
It adds and takes away at the same time. This is truly an excellent take of this song, though. I'm astonished. Fantastic work. We should all strive to play and sing so well.
makes me cry. :( another beautiful rendition. note perfect once again.. singing is lovely too. if you don't mind, can you tell me what reverb your using on the vox/guitar?
Just noticed this question now...it's Space Designer, which is the convolution reverb plugin in Logic,I used it on all the songs...thanks again for your positive comments.
I feel it takes an incredible and BRAVE talent to even attempt to cover any of Nick Drakes music. You've done a brilliant job. You're so right on it's almost spooky! AND a Guild M20 to boot. Wow....Incredible!
It's like.. there's a feeling that the original recordings evoke and you've somehow managed to copy that. I'm not even saying if that's a good or bad thing --- it just is.
It actually isn't a Gibson,it's a Guild M20...it's a vintage instrument so you'd have to look in stores that carry vintage guitars,in my case I found this one on ebay...Martin actually makes new model all mahogany guitars that are similar to this one for under $1000
the guild M-20 is still in production and doesn't sound bad new, sounds cracking in fact but it will need to be a vintage instrument for the years of tonal development
hi funnyhaha, songblam's lines should be respected. I think that "plectrum" is doing such a great job on ND songs. still, the difference between the try to get the closest to ND's originals and to create an own song is a VERY crucial to my point of view. In fact it's still easier to copy than to create something out of your own mind. I still do believe that.
Don't listen to "songblam" - he's just jealous because he can't play Nick's stuff as good as you can. (Hey "songblam" - what have you ever written? Worry more about yourself and stop criticizing others who don't deserve criticism).
Plectrum34, I think you are doing an AWESOME job of paying tribute to Nick and helping to unveil a bit of the mystery by showing us his elusive playing style. I LOVE that I can now see how it looks to play this accurately. Thank you!!!
I found myself able to listen to only a few seconds of your copies, though you've done a good job of it.
Try someday to be more who You are through music and not who Nick or anybody else is, then maybe your Own versions may come through. We already have Nick's versions...
Have u ever considered booking gigs or touring with your covers? they are top notch and far better than anything else i have seen, ive heard there is good money in cover bands and i know id come see you, you be sure to get top reviews
Thanks for your positive comments...I actually do cover gigs here in the NYC area although they mostly require I play more well known, crowd pleasing type songs...still,I try and slip in some of these when I can.
I'll second that. There are few people capable of touring / performing as a Nick Drake cover band closely duplicating the sound of the original songs and recordings. But Plectrum34 could probably do it.
Very cool...I have a tech question here: is your M-20 coming through the vocal mic or is it separately mic'd? Sounds fantastic.....I just switched to Logic myself and could use some pointers!
Thanks for your positive comments...if you look closely you'll see that there's a mic for the guitar as well...if I record both vocal and guitar simultaneously I always use a mic for both...good luck working with Logic, think you'll enjoy it...
this is just beautiful. I love the wistful, understated way you sing this - Nick Drake covers are nearly always oversung in my opinion - but you've really got it right. Thanks
I'm so happy to have found this video. I'm a big fan of Drake's work, and so are you (obviously). I don't think I've ever heard such an impressive rendition of any of his stuff. I'm sure he'd be honored.
I normally cringe when people attempt Nick's songs, but they never do them the justice that you do. Watching you bring these amazing songs to life is a treat. You must have a real passion for his music to dedicate yourself in the manner you have. Well done, you're a credit to Nick and his musical legacy.

I love the sound of Nick Drake songs but when I attempt them my strumming always seems off - can you describe your strumming technique? Are you using a pick? or are you holding your fingers as if you are holding a pick, and hitting the strings with a combination of the fleshy parts of the thumb and index finger and the fingernails of these two fingers?
Thanks for your positive comments. For this I'm strumming without a pick using mainly the nail on my index finger but also some of my thumb nail and flesh as you mentioned.Try emphasizing the bass strings while you strum, striking the high E only occasionally,I think this is how he gets that warm, bottom end sound when he strums
How do you handle the tuning on an older and more fragile guitar such as your '58 M-20?
I think the tuning for this song is
D A D G A F# capo on 2nd?? I notice your capo is on the 4th fret. I have an older guitar & don't want to stress my bridge or break strings. BTW, your renditions are the best I've heard all the way around; thanks so much for sharing; you are really talented & do a fine justice to these not so easy to play & beautiful songs. Any chance you might do Milk & Honey??
Thanks very much for your positive comments.I tune this a step down from the tuning you list(CGCFGE),which would alleviate the tension that you're concerned with but I should also say that when I recorded Black Eyed Dog I tuned the low E up to G and didn't find it to be a problem.I wouldn't leave it that way for long but I think the guitar can probably take it for short intervals
seriously, best cover i have heard until now. perfect guitar playing and nice voice. it's very smooth and maybe a bit 'safe'..perhaps you can try to put a little bit more 'emotion' in it..sorry if that's offensive to you. anyway, again: best i've heard/seen.
these are the type of talents that should be posted on youtube. i wish other people would really polish their work before putting anything on here. great work man. true talent

Any chance you might do Milk & Honey??

Thanks very much for your positive comments.I tune this a step down from the tuning you list(CGCFGE),which would alleviate the tension that you're concerned with but I should also say that when I recorded Black Eyed Dog I tuned the low E up to G and didn't find it to be a problem.I wouldn't leave it that way for long but I think the guitar can probably take it for short intervals

just watched a couple of other videos. skip the 'emotion' part. lol.

seriously, best cover i have heard until now. perfect guitar playing and nice voice. it's very smooth and maybe a bit 'safe'..perhaps you can try to put a little bit more 'emotion' in it..sorry if that's offensive to you. anyway, again: best i've heard/seen.
i will subscribe now as well :D
good luck

ND would have loved to have a quiet, listening audience while performing, that's it.
