1973...summer between my Fresh / Soph year in high school. Listened to this endlessly with my friend Scott. Really opened my eyes to what was possible musically. Still great today!
Great is great and this is definitely great and that's that. Whether Tull has made better or worse albums is almost irrelevant. Can't we all just get along???
Agreed...Passion Play is much better live!! I also agree that this work, once you've seen it in a live format (I did in July of 1973 at the L.A. Forum) truely shines as Ian's masterpiece. I have often said (to anybody who will listen) that Jethro Tull is one of two bands that usually sounded better live than "on vinyl" (I'm dating myself!) Springsteen's E-Street Band is the other. Thanks for posting this...a definite trip down "memory lane"...
Given that I'm largely unimpressed with much of Jethro Tull's traditional song-structured work (granting it high quality but not actually liking it much), I'm blown away by the sheer beauty of much of this.
I'd forgotten that Ian's singing voice on this was about as good as it ever got. And his soprano sax playing is better than I remembered. I'd be happy with half his talent.
best section of the passion fellas: forest dance edit 2, the foot of our stairs, overture of the overseer, flight from lucifer, 10.08 to paddington, magus perde, they def saved the best for last in this one...too bad the critics couldn't realize it...but the top spot on the billboard was all that was needed :-)
Same I really can't understand people who said this isn't creative. I saw the reviews before I heard the album and thought it must have been really bad to get such reviews but it was amazing. Thats why I don't listen to reviews.
@Marcusvdgg71 It's just decent if that man..... Long winded & it seems a bit aimless in alot of places during the album.... I would not call this a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination... it doesn't suck... if anything it's just ok...
@ogrebattle22763 ..which passion play are you listening to?...so far ahead of its time..songs blended together like never before...and a synth that actually rocks..open your mind
@bloozemc Open my mind! I have tried to listen to this album many times my friend & believe me it is good in some parts but for the most part you are definitely hyping this album up way to much.... Way to much! I admire your taste... Tull is excellent but this is not a great album.... good but not great!
@ogrebattle22763 well some time ago I'd have agreed you, but now I think that APP is just a bit more difficult to listen, but it's not worse, not at all!
@Aqualung1989 As I said A Passion Play is good in certain spots but overall it is just an ok album... but I wouldn't hype it up as anything near Jethro Tull's best work, there are plenty of albums in Tull's discography which are much better then this album... I could go down the line with quite a few.... but I do agree it's not horrible!
yes you are so right, but don't ignore the piece between 3:02 and 4:56. Now, 35 years later I hear it as a very good jazz sequence (the sax and the whole arrangement!!)
Martin Bare never got the true recognition that he deserved back the or now!!

Thanks for the editing job. The split between this and the previous was spot on.
I don't get how anyone could not like this, unless you're brain dead.

where passion play shines is in the live concert format, it's a great spectacle.

4:57 - 5:00 its stolen from yes but you have to be paranoid to consider it a plaggio because it is insignificant
