The Elantra does not get 40MPG highway. Check out that data on the website 'fuelly'. Consumer watchdog has sent a letter to president Obama and to the EPA stating that you car does worse that what the EPA tests reveal, and Chevy Cruze consistently does better than what it's EPA values are. Both the Elantra and Cruze are 33MPG combined).
The Cruze gets an average of 28% better mileage than the Elantra.
Stop lying please. My mother got an Elantra, always in Eco mode, can't get more than 25MPGcity
if youre ever to get this car, you gotta go with the sport. the skirt, 16 inch tires with rims, and the spoiler really make this a head turner. yes i own one. :D
@xxpac4lyfexx Gotta say, great car, spoiler doesnt look right, especially where there is a rear tail light in the back dash. Spoilers belong on cars that actually utilize them. The 16 inch rims are deff nice, only time I regretted them was when I had to pay for new tires =). Great car....has really been a good investment. Resale was not a factor to my wife and I. This car is going to be drivin into the ground.
I've had this car for 3 years now, no issues whatsoever , the gas is good, the rides good, and it's fun for long road trips. 30,000 KM and counting. Only issue i have is high-speed driving, 90mph + feels like I'm gonna take off like an airplane, lol
@EdmDude Is taking the car over 80 mph really an issue? I do spend a lot of my time on the highway and right now have my '03 Buick LeSabre. I know this is a downgrade in size, but I really do think it's a lovely car. I do get to take my car flying down the highway without having to think twice. Will that not be true with the Elantra?
I do a lot of interstate driving and this car is great. It's got a quiet cabin and smooth ride for its price. Plus satellite radio and my iPod hooked up. The hours on the road fly by.

08 elantra have many good features but mine is so bumpy.. Not smooth at all. I also do not like the way it has rough shifting while driving between 15-25mph. problem with the lancer is that its a mitsubishi and mitsubishi is considered the most unreliable japanese company. mitsubishi does make some nice cars but they still have alot to work on as far as reliability goes.Remember the 2007 mitsubishi Raider? mitsu's truck that was going to compete against tundra, f150 and such, the Raider was a complete disaster and Failed as a truck, mitsubishi only sold 48,000 cars last year in the usa, hyundai sold over a million cars last year.
"dimebag699" is an idiot. I drive these cars almost everyday. I work for Hertz at LAX airport and we carry tons of these Elantra's. IT DOES GET 28 MPG IN THE CITY AND 36 MPG ON THE HIGHWAY. Our employees and customers love this car. Don't believe me...rent it at Hertz, Avis or Budget. *If you are in the market for a compact car you must drive this car.
6 airbags are definitely less of a death trap than the cars of 3 and 4 years ago. What are you comparing the Elantra to(a truck?)? For the price you pay, what would you buy? Fuel economy is still better than 85% of the cars on the market today. Did you have a buddy convince you Elantra's are trash? Are you fighting somebody else's battle? I'm a happy owner. 100,000 mile warranty (transferable too!!)can't be beat.
I know I am leaving 2 comments here, but one complaint I have heard about the Elantra from several people, who have been in collisions with this vehicle, is that the front airbags don't deploy as they should in an accident. Hope that Hyundai realizes this issue, and fixes it as well.
@buffalocrotch ...I understand your friends' concern about the airbags. Most people assume that in an accident, the airbags just pop out. However, Hyundai and most other manufacturers design "smart" airbags that don't deploy unless they're needed. In fact, in some types of collisions (even some serious ones), the airbags could do more harm than good.
@-MikenJamie - no big deal, friends, co-workers, acquaintances, if people I meet don't f*** with me, or stab me in the back, then they are considered friends.
when they redesign this vehicle in the future, I hope they consider giving the Elantra a 5 speed Auto, as well as giving the car a sportier suspension that holds up better. I owned a 2003 Hyundai Elantra GT, and it was a pretty good car, but it needed new brakes all the time, and had a few rattles in the passenger compartment. Hopefully they have improved this car since then.
@ tkorenny - Your friend should have used his cup holders if water bottles are to blame for failed airbags. I find this very hard to believe. Hyundais are coming up. The 2011 Elantras will have more power and safety features. If you worry about resale value, buy a Honda. New Hyundai owners aren't selling as quick as Honda buyers anyway. Just open up craigslist and see for yourself for 07 + models.
Hyundai's are cheaply made cars. That is the reason you get such a great warranty! They have to. They're junk! Major airbag problems with mine and I know someone who had an accident in his and they DID NOT DEPLOY. Junk cars!
This car is nice. I recently had to get over the obsession with speed. I had a 98 Buck Lesabre with a 3.8li V6. It's not anything I could race with, but it makes a huge difference if I need to get home fast. (Highway)
I drove this car today and I love the ride. I'm kind of a big guy and I fit well inside of it, so does my Dad. It's a really great car. Test drive one. Gas mileage is awesome.
This model has defective airbags!!!! All the wiring is under the passenger seat. Something as simple as a water bottel rolling around will disengage the whole system! This car is dangerous! I had one, glad to be rid of the death trap! You should have received notice of this. I did after years of fighting them about it and after I traded it in!!!
Well, I just know the Elantra is one of the best option if you are looking for a sedan, with a lot of confort and excellent performance for a great price. I have an Accent 2007, more than 3 years, over 60000km, NO PROBLEM AT ALL. I dont know whats that bullshit about no power lock standard that someone said, but my sister got the less expensive Elantra available here and it has power everthing!. It is better than a boring Corolla or a shitty Yaris. Way more QUALITY and PERFORMANCE. Hyundai FTW!
@wtrdogg20 You said it brother. We have a 2007 Toyota Corolla and it's bland as hell. Just bought a 2010 Hyundai Elantra and love it! Packed with features at an affordable price. The only gripe is the not-so-good side impact saftey scores but frontal impact received excellent scores. I know Hyundai will remedy the side impact saftey in future models. They've come a long way and are catching up to the big boys (Besides, Toyota has a lot of recalls and saftey issues that far surpass Hyundai).
I just bought an Elantra 2 months ago. I love it. No complaints. Handling can easily be improved with 17 or 18" rims and a sway bar upgrade from 17 to 21 inch sway bar (part # 55510-2L100)can be purchased at the dealer for about $80USD. These cars have more hp than a Corrolla brand new. If you have a contact in Korea to order parts for you, there's SO many option upgrades and parts for this car.
I just bought my Elantra on Halloween and I LOVE IT!! Its the SE model in Quick Silver, and its absolutly beautiful! I used to own a Mazda, but I has so many problems that I decided to go with a hyundai because of their amazing warrently. If you are considering a Hyundai, go for it! You will definitly get more bang for your buck thats for sure!
Why the fuck do people give a shit about re-sale value. What type of cheap bastard sells their cars?
Ive kept every single car ive ever owned. I have an Old Toyota Tercel and a Old Audi a4 that still work fine.
I currently own a Hyundai Sonata 09' and I'll NEVER look at any other brand again. Especial now that Hyundai has Luxury cars.
I remember when Hyundais were HORRID cars. Now they changed SO much that they beating out Toyota and even Luxury cars thanks to the Hyundai Genesis and Equus
Commentator was a bit ridiculous by stating that the Elantra had "intimidating" competition from those other car makers. Its better than all of those except for the Civic, but the Civic is more expensive. The Cobalt and the Focus dont stand anywhere near the Elantra in quality. Check out the ratings in US News, Elantra beat out pretty much everyone except Civic.
hey i tried this car yesterday and believe me it's pretty gd,,, iam actully thinking of having hyundai in stead of any expensive vehicle,,, hyundai is finally growing up ,,, : )

If Hyundai would only stand by their word for that damn warranty.
They some how get away with fixing cars that are too bad of shape.
Not to mention they take your car for weeks on end and you wont see your car again. because they take so mush time on all their other cars that need to be crushed.
People have told me that they robbed when they bought their Hyundai's Back in Early 21st.
then i found out what getting screwed felt like in 2007 when i bought a Hyundai Azera. What a piece of crap.
it does everything pretty well, but excels at nothing, and has no personality. for a practical runabout that would normally be ok, but the depreciation is gonna be absurd, and it's not impossible to impart a bit of attitude on the cheap, like saturn did in their cars, so...what's the point?
i'd say elantra is that lil bit better. but for the elantra you trade off a little bit of accelaration for a better interior look. on the civic the interior just looks boring and plain but it gets better accelearation.
but on the plus hand, if your a race car driving junkie, civics the car cuz you can make that car do just about anything. but for street driving the Elantra is pretty avg enough.
i have had my elantra for 3 months and i have a tiburon also i love the apperance and the performance i added a few aftermarket parts aircleaners/ ec. it runs great the fuel economy is great also its around 27 mpg i bought mine new for 12,989 + 1200 for the 10 year warrenty
i live in singapore n over here n i think korea this is no more called an elantra its called avante n the leather seats n auto air conditioning come stantard not only when u upgrade
i got a 2010 for about 13,000 new its kacki colored it had some rebate that was like 2500 off or something around there but the price when i bought it was around13,000

i have a2008 elantrait , it is the sorry,s car i have ever had. they lie and say the warranty will cover everthing not!!!!!!!!!!! had the car oniy 8 days and had to put it in the shop for 4weeks . they have bad motor,s and trans .they have limmeted warranty on most of the car and will lie and try to make you pay for repairs and parts cover under warramty. stay away from hyundai and kia cars!!
Yea, ok. Engine and tranny? What went bad first? Any details? No. The dealer didn't want to fix it because you fucked it up or you're just a hater talking out your ass.
Ive had my new 2009 elantra for 3 months 2800 km. I have driven it once or twice on the highway but mostly city driving to work and back, If you looking for a good quality economical car I recommend the elantra. I dont have any regrets getting this car
I hired a high spec 09 Elantra with under 10k miles on the clock in Canada for 2 wks in July. Good points were comfortable ride and roomy interior & boot. It was also quiet cruising & economical. But steering lacked feedback and acceleration was unexciting. Worse was the auto trans was slow to respond to kickdown and the engine very noisy under hard acceleration - this is not a driver's car and inferior in most respects to the Ford Focus I recently hired in the UK (and my 11 year old Mondeo)

I hate my Elantra. It has given me nothing but troubles. All the regulators are broken. I had to change the radiator and had to spend a lot having the engine fixed as the spark plug was not firing properly. Now, I have to fix the axle. I am willing to have $1000 on my Elantra 2000 GLS automatic. The interior is cheap. everything breaks.
This review is for the latest version of the Elantra I believe. The downside of a rapidly improving company is that the older the model you look at it will be vastly more disappointing.

thats right. I am staying away from Hyundai but I sure do hope that you buy a bunch of these cheap cars and then you will realize what I am talking about.
for Hyundai owners: you need to wait for the car to turn 5-6 yrs old and then you will start collecting its fallen parts.
That's cause you don't take care of your shit! Even an expensive luxury car can't stand 5-6 yrs of negligence. I know a Sonata owner who bought his new in 2003 and currently has 60k+ miles and it still looks near perfect. Wash the car twice a month, do scheduled maintenance and that includes promptly replacing wear & tear parts, and if you get into a minor fender bender, FIX THE DAMAGE w/ the insurance proceeds! Don't drive a beat up Hyundai and blaim the manufacturer for your own laziness!
regulators broken (minor issue), changed radiator (not uncommon on a 9 yr old car), spark plugs (DIY $8 job, ok 40$ with wires), axle (again 9 yr old car). Sorry, but your Elantra isn't in bad shape. You just don't have the money to fix it all so you do the next best thing, blame Hyundai. Next it will be "my ash tray rattles, Hyundai's sux". C'mon dude, you sound like a baby.
I have an Elantra 2008 and that was my first thought....and it's not ugly at all,if somebody want to talk about ugly cars well just take a look at the front end of the new 2010 Mazda 3,the clown car always with a smile ,great cars tho...
I love mine, 2007 limited with tan leather in regata blue and a moonroof, it feels and looks like a mini LEXUS. The only thing it doesnt have is automatic locks which lock automatically, Hyundai should have made standard, shame on u Hyundai
i have a 2008 elantra GL(canadian version) and so far 32000 kms and feels like the very first day i bought it,i am so happy ,smooth, reliable, really good on gas, roomy,,extremely good brakes, great warranty, this is my third Hyundai and for sure i will go for my fourth after this one...
It was used as a small delivery vehicle, and then as a DD during the day.
We now have an 09 Elantra and it's pleasant. Heated seats, strong A/C, not really good fuel mileage but it needs to be broken in anyways. Had 70km on it when we got it about 2 or 3 weeks ago, now has almost 6,000. This car should last a long time, though.
I have purchased a brand new Honda Civic Sport edition and have driven a used corolla, and Mitsubishi ones before I got a brand new 04 Hyundai Elantra. I was never fully satisfied with Civic and Corolla because it didn't have enough power. The Elantra has been my favorite among its competitors I'd had. It's acceleration is pretty impressive considering the HP and the gas consumption of the engine. And, I notice that the resale value isn't as bad as it used to be. I'm sastified anyway.
but the redesigned Mazda 3 is now ugly, especially that front end. I own a 2007 Mazda 3, and now with the 2010 redesign, I won't buy another one. Also, if you look closely at the Mazda 3, Mazda has removed several of the attributes that the car used to have before the redesign. I only hope that Mazda realizes they have ruined their car, and when the redesign the 3 the next time, they fix these issues.
I have purchased two of these, an '02 and an '05. Very good, reliable transportation. I drove the '02 for a year or so before giving it to my daughter. It now has 116,000 miles on it and seems to be holding up very well. My '05 has 87,000 miles (90 miles a day commuting) and is also holding up very well.
I would buy another Hyundai anytime. I tend to drive cars into the ground, so resale value is of little consequence to me.
nice car...I myself own one...though in where I live, it does not come with the factory fitted radio...but if you are getting this car, I highly recommend it.
This model of Hyundai is good for driving from point A to B. It doesn't offer much of the "fun stuff" but for the money you can't blame it. Also the warranty is the best in the country. The way the gas prices look this car can be great. Go test drive one, you might like something else better.
the SE model is the SPORT model, right? tell me more about it. i've seen many of these cars out there and have owned a 2006 Kia Spectra5 & loved it. i'm curious of the elantra...

*If you are in the market for a compact car you must drive this car.
spam91504 2 years ago
6 airbags are definitely less of a death trap than the cars of 3 and 4 years ago. What are you comparing the Elantra to(a truck?)? For the price you pay, what would you buy? Fuel economy is still better than 85% of the cars on the market today. Did you have a buddy convince you Elantra's are trash? Are you fighting somebody else's battle? I'm a happy owner. 100,000 mile warranty (transferable too!!)can't be beat.
John00117 2 years ago
they don,t get 28 in town and 32 hwy you get 300 -325 a tank sometimes less

I know I am leaving 2 comments here, but one complaint I have heard about the Elantra from several people, who have been in collisions with this vehicle, is that the front airbags don't deploy as they should in an accident. Hope that Hyundai realizes this issue, and fixes it as well.
buffalocrotch 2 years ago
@buffalocrotch ...I understand your friends' concern about the airbags. Most people assume that in an accident, the airbags just pop out. However, Hyundai and most other manufacturers design "smart" airbags that don't deploy unless they're needed. In fact, in some types of collisions (even some serious ones), the airbags could do more harm than good.
mikenjamie7683 2 years ago
@buffalocrotch ... apologies. You didn't necessarily say "friends,' you just referred to "several people." I didnt' want to misquote you.
mikenjamie7683 2 years ago
@-MikenJamie - no big deal, friends, co-workers, acquaintances, if people I meet don't f*** with me, or stab me in the back, then they are considered friends.
buffalocrotch 2 years ago
when they redesign this vehicle in the future, I hope they consider giving the Elantra a 5 speed Auto, as well as giving the car a sportier suspension that holds up better. I owned a 2003 Hyundai Elantra GT, and it was a pretty good car, but it needed new brakes all the time, and had a few rattles in the passenger compartment. Hopefully they have improved this car since then.
buffalocrotch 2 years ago

I hope we're able to get this one.

Still lovin' my 2004 Elantra GT. Hatchback is also a major win.

This model has defective airbags!!!! All the wiring is under the passenger seat. Something as simple as a water bottel rolling around will disengage the whole system! This car is dangerous! I had one, glad to be rid of the death trap! You should have received notice of this. I did after years of fighting them about it and after I traded it in!!!
tkorenny 2 years ago
Well, I just know the Elantra is one of the best option if you are looking for a sedan, with a lot of confort and excellent performance for a great price. I have an Accent 2007, more than 3 years, over 60000km, NO PROBLEM AT ALL. I dont know whats that bullshit about no power lock standard that someone said, but my sister got the less expensive Elantra available here and it has power everthing!. It is better than a boring Corolla or a shitty Yaris. Way more QUALITY and PERFORMANCE. Hyundai FTW!
wtrdogg20 2 years ago 5

EliteSlayer542 2 years ago 3
Commentator was a bit ridiculous by stating that the Elantra had "intimidating" competition from those other car makers. Its better than all of those except for the Civic, but the Civic is more expensive. The Cobalt and the Focus dont stand anywhere near the Elantra in quality. Check out the ratings in US News, Elantra beat out pretty much everyone except Civic.

No , Elantra
heroheroic 2 years ago
it does everything pretty well, but excels at nothing, and has no personality. for a practical runabout that would normally be ok, but the depreciation is gonna be absurd, and it's not impossible to impart a bit of attitude on the cheap, like saturn did in their cars, so...what's the point?
MaximusRelaximus 2 years ago
pointless car. save a grand or two to give up far more in real, long-term value.
MaximusRelaximus 2 years ago
i'd say elantra is that lil bit better. but for the elantra you trade off a little bit of accelaration for a better interior look. on the civic the interior just looks boring and plain but it gets better accelearation.
but on the plus hand, if your a race car driving junkie, civics the car cuz you can make that car do just about anything. but for street driving the Elantra is pretty avg enough.

proteus404 2 years ago 3

I won't buy Hyundia again.

This review is for the latest version of the Elantra I believe. The downside of a rapidly improving company is that the older the model you look at it will be vastly more disappointing.

thats right. I am staying away from Hyundai but I sure do hope that you buy a bunch of these cheap cars and then you will realize what I am talking about.
for Hyundai owners: you need to wait for the car to turn 5-6 yrs old and then you will start collecting its fallen parts.
jbdpramod 2 years ago
That's cause you don't take care of your shit! Even an expensive luxury car can't stand 5-6 yrs of negligence. I know a Sonata owner who bought his new in 2003 and currently has 60k+ miles and it still looks near perfect. Wash the car twice a month, do scheduled maintenance and that includes promptly replacing wear & tear parts, and if you get into a minor fender bender, FIX THE DAMAGE w/ the insurance proceeds! Don't drive a beat up Hyundai and blaim the manufacturer for your own laziness!

A 9 yr old car hmmmm......
regulators broken (minor issue), changed radiator (not uncommon on a 9 yr old car), spark plugs (DIY $8 job, ok 40$ with wires), axle (again 9 yr old car). Sorry, but your Elantra isn't in bad shape. You just don't have the money to fix it all so you do the next best thing, blame Hyundai. Next it will be "my ash tray rattles, Hyundai's sux". C'mon dude, you sound like a baby.

32,000k is really not a lot.
My mom had a 2005 Elantra VE and in 2 years we put over 200,000km's on it, and then the engine just... ran out.
Which is pretty good considering it was driven for 8 hours a night every night and then during the day too. And I drove it pretty hard.
Ultimately they're pretty reliable and work well.
Granted if I had, say, a Civic then it would still be on the road, but oh well. :P
QuantumCarl 2 years ago
wha.... just out of curiosity, where were u guys going driving 200,000k in 2 years???
SHATTAPYOFACE 2 years ago
It was used as a small delivery vehicle, and then as a DD during the day.
We now have an 09 Elantra and it's pleasant. Heated seats, strong A/C, not really good fuel mileage but it needs to be broken in anyways. Had 70km on it when we got it about 2 or 3 weeks ago, now has almost 6,000. This car should last a long time, though.
QuantumCarl 2 years ago
the fuck were u delivering twigs?

The best mpg I've got was 35 for an average and the worst was 31.
Handle is nicer and better than I expected. The cabin is roomy and quite.
The sound system is clear and enough for powerful sound.
Nice and well degined interior and love 4 cup holders in front and 2 for back.
So far I can't find any issues from this car.
Feels smooth and reliable.
I never know much about Elantra before but well done on my own decision to purchased it.

This model of Hyundai is good for driving from point A to B. It doesn't offer much of the "fun stuff" but for the money you can't blame it. Also the warranty is the best in the country. The way the gas prices look this car can be great. Go test drive one, you might like something else better.
