@gammer789 Also, if you'll notice, there's no fluidity between riffs-- and this is just riffs. When Eddie jams, he plays a rhythm part and then usually plays a little solo spot, or just noodles a bit. But regardless, Curt Mitchell is infamous for just playing riffs back to back, and that leads me to believe that this is NOT EVH.
@gammer789 Bullshit all you want but just because he played Top of the World in there doesn't mean it's Eddie, and if it was Eddie the tone would be different.
Thank you so much for posting this. It's great!!! EVH is my all time favorite guitarist, I've been waiting since '84 to see them live, still havent got to yet, but hopefully they will release something this year. THanks again, VH forever!!!
Glad I found this ... memories ..1982 VH Baton Rouge Centroplex.. me and 4 buddies "held the door for the ice guy" and followed him in ... and went and sat down in the arena. Alex came out and checked his drums for about 15 min... freakin awesome. THEN Eddie came out and did "THIS " walkin around checkin his stage sound... We couldnt stand it and started screamin... on one of the silent moments he finally heard us and started pointing and got security to see us. A lifetime highlight
i was a dedicated EVH freak from roughly '81 through '90. if this isn't eddie, it's probably the best imitation i've heard, with the closest tone (ignoring multi-generation cassette). some of it sounds like he's distracted, which may account for abnormal imprecision. the lower volume stuff like the slack whammy on the E string sounds _exactly_ like the characteristics of EVH's standard PAF running through one of his bitchin' plexis. few eddie "imitators" have the brains/cash to fire that rig.
i dig that it's not up to normal EVH standards, and sounds somewhat soulless, but you don't think maybe it was because he was testing gear or something? i've probably only heard 2 other people that come close to this level of playing EVH style, however shoddy. who do you think it may have been?
Not Eddie at all!!!! In fact, I find it funny that in this solo there are excerpts of STANDING ON TOP OF THE WORLD which is a Van Hagar song that didn't come out until over 10 years later.
Not Eddie at all!!!! In fact, I find it funny that in this solo there are excerpts of STANDING ON TOP OF THE WORLD which is a Van Hagar song that didn't come out until over 10 years later.
@pdxyankee22 you can hear stuff in his first live tour that was used years later. Im sure he has all kinds of stuff he just hasnt found the right song for yet....
His tone is soaked with reverb here. He ran his echoplex after the dummy load, right? He kind of created his own effects loop that way. There is a link that describes it. If you try to run an echoplex or anything similar in front of a cranked Marshall it doesn't sound good.
I like this, would have killed to hear this in 1984....he's better than the more technical shredders cuz he ROCKS. those guys don't have that....BUT, the older I get, I realize there's alot more to great playing than this. Yes, he's more than tricks, but this clip is alot of tricks, the tapping, the squeels, harmonics. he was great at that but other styles are just as valid, it not better. More vocabulary...but he WAS my favorite...in many ways, his HUGE accolades are somewhat overrrated,..ouch
i dont give a shit if this is bad quality audio. it still sounds pretty sweet. i wish i could play like that. i work my ass off everyday on guitar to play like this or similar
@codyjt5150 unfortunately for you (and many others) you have been tooooo heavily influenced by evh and others techniques-sorry but its true-youre idea of perfection is to sound like someone else-
I don't know what it is but I always go back to listen to Eddie's guitar playing! You have all these shredders on youtube and they have great technique, but Eddie's solos and guitar playing in general is much more interesting to listen to.
edward knows how to accentuate and annunciate the notes. a skill lacking with most guitarists today. its a lot like conversation. beginning and ending a sentence. he does it with chords etc.
Yeah, I've been playing guitar for 28 years now and VH still makes me wanna strap on and play like nothing else... it's why you wanna play electric guitar. In my opinion it's because Ed didn't "shred".. he was having fun by playing "whatever", and he controlled his "whatever" so damn good, like falling down the stairs landing on your feet... looking good while tumbling down :D
And he perfected it by doing it over and over again until it's "smooth", genious!.. :)
Been playing for 30 years, rock and metal. Eddie taught a generation a new way to play, his influence on players today incalculable. Because of that people can play similarly, but NOBODY sounds like Eddie. He is the man, and this recording is a jewel.
I understand liking the DLR-era sound, but DLR had nothing to do with their musical sound. He played no instruments on stage or in studio and didn't tell Ed how they should sound. Seriously, VH would have sounded like they did without DLR. It's also my belief that we'd never heard of DLR if he hand't joined up with Van Halen. However, Van Halen would still have been huge without DLR, and if you think about it, it almost wouldn't have mattered who their singer was.
Hey jimmyboy, clearly you've never heard of a little ditty called "Ice Cream Man" or "Could This Be Magic?" or even "The Full Bug"! And, yer an idiot if you think DLR was some run of the mill schmoe and the mighty VH would have risen to the heights they did without him!
Yes, I'm familiar with those songs. And I still believe VH would have become great without DLR. He's not a run-of-the-mill schmoe; not by any means, except for musical greatness. I don't see any musical greatness in him. I *do* see performance greatness, and that's where DLR shines. Yet there are other great performers out there, who are also better singers, and I believe VH would have been even greater with one of them instead.
@jimmyboy131 Ted Templeman and Dave had a say in the direction and overall tone/style of the music to sell their image. With Dave and Ted gone, he was free to do whatever he wanted, hence the more ballad-y stuff.
Wonder why eddie stopped using his phase shifter so much. Thats pretty much what sets him apart from everything else. now its a chorusing and detune thing hes got goin on
this 1983 audio came from a cd called "guitarman". think this jam was done around the time of the music for "the wild life".anyways this cd came out in 1994 i think? it's a boot.
It's a pinch harmonic on the g string on the 3rd fret with vivrato. It's kind of a hit or miss but not when Eddie does it, he nails it every time. If your guitar has low quality pickups, it won't come out so "in your face."
i was messin around with that and i found you can do a pinch harmonic or a natural harmonic right before the 3rd fret. now just getting these damn floyds to stay in tune... :)
Put the 3rd spring in the back like it was designed and it WILL stay in tune. Ppl like to use 2 springs to make it easier to dive..but thats what causes it to not stay in tune.
it has 3 springs. its just getting the correct bridge height and making sure its completely level with the body while the locking nut also does its job
he had good velocity back then...hope his new shit has some aggressive attack and quality old school tone---I'll puke if he uses that silly sustainer pickup garbage
Actually, if you listen to the rhythm at the end of "Jump", you'll notice that it is the intro rhythm to "Standing on Top of the World". Almost everything on this mix is from 1984.
