  • This is Curt Mitchell, i'm almost positive of that.

  • @PJHAIGHT Ima stop you there and call BULLSHIT! if you listen closly you hear Top O'

    The World

  • @gammer789 Also, if you'll notice, there's no fluidity between riffs-- and this is just riffs. When Eddie jams, he plays a rhythm part and then usually plays a little solo spot, or just noodles a bit. But regardless, Curt Mitchell is infamous for just playing riffs back to back, and that leads me to believe that this is NOT EVH.

  • @gammer789 Bullshit all you want but just because he played Top of the World in there doesn't mean it's Eddie, and if it was Eddie the tone would be different.

  • Thank you so much for posting this. It's great!!! EVH is my all time favorite guitarist, I've been waiting since '84 to see them live, still havent got to yet, but hopefully they will release something this year. THanks again, VH forever!!!

  • too bad the quality of the sound is terrible

  • you wanna only hear this magic guitarplaying...

  • little on top of the world in there

  • Glad I found this ... memories ..1982 VH Baton Rouge Centroplex.. me and 4 buddies "held the door for the ice guy" and followed him in ... and went and sat down in the arena. Alex came out and checked his drums for about 15 min... freakin awesome. THEN Eddie came out and did "THIS " walkin around checkin his stage sound... We couldnt stand it and started screamin... on one of the silent moments he finally heard us and started pointing and got security to see us. A lifetime highlight

  • 77 jam, 84 jam......you people can make up some shit.

  • from 4:00 to 4:15 i think i can tell it isn't eddie I just don't hear him in it if ya feel me

  • i was a dedicated EVH freak from roughly '81 through '90. if this isn't eddie, it's probably the best imitation i've heard, with the closest tone (ignoring multi-generation cassette). some of it sounds like he's distracted, which may account for abnormal imprecision. the lower volume stuff like the slack whammy on the E string sounds _exactly_ like the characteristics of EVH's standard PAF running through one of his bitchin' plexis. few eddie "imitators" have the brains/cash to fire that rig.

  • @2ndAsstJizzMopper I'm not saying its not his tone I'm saying it's someone else playing on his rig

  • i dig that it's not up to normal EVH standards, and sounds somewhat soulless, but you don't think maybe it was because he was testing gear or something? i've probably only heard 2 other people that come close to this level of playing EVH style, however shoddy. who do you think it may have been?

  • @2ndAsstJizzMopper Who? One of my guesses would be Russ Parish or "Satchel" as he goes by when with Steel Panther. That guy can emulate anyone.

  • @josiahgust maybe he can. but this is Eddie Van Halen playing.

  • @arising87 I was asking 2ndAsstJizzMopper who else he thought could play Eddie's style that well, not arguing whether or not this is Eddie.

  • @josiahgust gotcha. there are some great imitators out there, but no one can play Van Halen like Van Halen in his prime.

  • @Mooseboy240 no it isn't. it's clearly Eddie.

  • @Mooseboy240 - Yea, its him

  • Not Eddie at all!!!! In fact, I find it funny that in this solo there are excerpts of STANDING ON TOP OF THE WORLD which is a Van Hagar song that didn't come out until over 10 years later.

  • @pdxyankee22 In fact the intro to "Standing on top of the world" is part of the ending to Jump.

    Have a listen.

  • @ozmium71Good call - that dude does NOT know Eddie...

  • @ozmium71 yes, and he played that riff on many occasions through out his career as well..

  • @pdxyankee22 you can hear stuff in his first live tour that was used years later. Im sure he has all kinds of stuff he just hasnt found the right song for yet....

  • His tone is soaked with reverb here. He ran his echoplex after the dummy load, right? He kind of created his own effects loop that way. There is a link that describes it. If you try to run an echoplex or anything similar in front of a cranked Marshall it doesn't sound good.

  • who the fuck is curt mitchell dot com?

  • This is Curt Mitchell playing, not EVH. At least be honest about it .

  • Pinch Harmonics master!! Sorry Billy......

  • Comment removed

  • he plays with so much feel and speed! so expressive! really makes his guitar speak. that's why he's the best guitar player in my book.

  • curt mitchell ive got this

  • I like this, would have killed to hear this in 1984....he's better than the more technical shredders cuz he ROCKS. those guys don't have that....BUT, the older I get, I realize there's alot more to great playing than this. Yes, he's more than tricks, but this clip is alot of tricks, the tapping, the squeels, harmonics. he was great at that but other styles are just as valid, it not better. More vocabulary...but he WAS my favorite...in many ways, his HUGE accolades are somewhat overrrated,..ouch

  • sounds little like stone cold crazy

  • My main problem with this is there's no "jam" part ... solo guitar simply can't be a JAM!

  • I wish someone would have the balls these days to form a kickass, technically profound rock and roll band, with no apologies or compromise.

Neil Young said rock and roll will never die... but I'm starting to wonder....

  • @kuhboom22 Wont happen anytime soon. People picking up music today are missing 4 things--passion,grit, personality and necessity.

  • i dont give a shit if this is bad quality audio. it still sounds pretty sweet. i wish i could play like that. i work my ass off everyday on guitar to play like this or similar

  • @codyjt5150 unfortunately for you (and many others) you have been tooooo heavily influenced by evh and others techniques-sorry but its true-youre idea of perfection is to sound like someone else-

  • Shit bad audio

  • HOLY FUCKING Clipping

  • Can someone post a track list?

  • wow lets see the evain water drinking, prius driving, politically correct bands of today try and do this.

  • @blklab32 LOL!!!!! Exactly!

  • I don't know what it is but I always go back to listen to Eddie's guitar playing! You have all these shredders on youtube and they have great technique, but Eddie's solos and guitar playing in general is much more interesting to listen to.

  • edward knows how to accentuate and annunciate the notes. a skill lacking with most guitarists today. its a lot like conversation. beginning and ending a sentence. he does it with chords etc.

  • @MrEddievanhalo 100 percent hes got this classic sound. Its like its still human.

  • @MrEddievanhalo cause music is from the soul not by the book and not by practice its getting out what's already there.

  • @MrEddievanhalo

Yeah, I've been playing guitar for 28 years now and VH still makes me wanna strap on and play like nothing else... it's why you wanna play electric guitar. In my opinion it's because Ed didn't "shred".. he was having fun by playing "whatever", and he controlled his "whatever" so damn good, like falling down the stairs landing on your feet... looking good while tumbling down :D

And he perfected it by doing it over and over again until it's "smooth", genious!.. :)

    God bless Ed,

  • this i not from 84!! or 83!!...Its from his studio.. but it was him learning his older stuff for the 93' tour!!!

  • Been playing for 30 years, rock and metal. Eddie taught a generation a new way to play, his influence on players today incalculable. Because of that people can play similarly, but NOBODY sounds like Eddie. He is the man, and this recording is a jewel.

  • @tymsrfr

Even many who don't worship EVH will agree that nobody quite sounds like he does (meaning his tone and style).

  • The clipping is pissing me off!

  • David Lee Roth Is Van Halen.

  • @DanKiwi @DanKiwi

I understand liking the DLR-era sound, but DLR had nothing to do with their musical sound. He played no instruments on stage or in studio and didn't tell Ed how they should sound. Seriously, VH would have sounded like they did without DLR. It's also my belief that we'd never heard of DLR if he hand't joined up with Van Halen. However, Van Halen would still have been huge without DLR, and if you think about it, it almost wouldn't have mattered who their singer was.

  • Hey jimmyboy, clearly you've never heard of a little ditty called "Ice Cream Man" or "Could This Be Magic?" or even "The Full Bug"! And, yer an idiot if you think DLR was some run of the mill schmoe and the mighty VH would have risen to the heights they did without him!

  • @Jmurray5150

Yes, I'm familiar with those songs. And I still believe VH would have become great without DLR. He's not a run-of-the-mill schmoe; not by any means, except for musical greatness. I don't see any musical greatness in him. I *do* see performance greatness, and that's where DLR shines. Yet there are other great performers out there, who are also better singers, and I believe VH would have been even greater with one of them instead.

  • @jimmyboy131 Ted Templeman and Dave had a say in the direction and overall tone/style of the music to sell their image. With Dave and Ted gone, he was free to do whatever he wanted, hence the more ballad-y stuff.

  • Wonder why eddie stopped using his phase shifter so much. Thats pretty much what sets him apart from everything else. now its a chorusing and detune thing hes got goin on

  • this 1983 audio came from a cd called "guitarman". think this jam was done around the time of the music for "the wild life".anyways this cd came out in 1994 i think? it's a boot.

    i used to have it.

  • Whats the song he starts playin at 3:20? i forgot it.

  • top of the world

  • top of the world from F.U.C.K. album

  • Top of the World

  • could be someone in their bedroom.

  • How Dare You.:D

  • lol i dared.... how goes it dan? its here more than its there lately.

  • he had freedom in the 80's. Now it would be banned by the global warming commis

  • that scream around 2:33-2:34 is fucking outrageous! how does he get that sound! haha

  • It's a pinch harmonic on the g string on the 3rd fret with vivrato. It's kind of a hit or miss but not when Eddie does it, he nails it every time. If your guitar has low quality pickups, it won't come out so "in your face."

  • i was messin around with that and i found you can do a pinch harmonic or a natural harmonic right before the 3rd fret. now just getting these damn floyds to stay in tune... :)

  • I have found that you have to use all 3 of the springs (not just 2) to keep the Floyd Rose in tune.

  • Put the 3rd spring in the back like it was designed and it WILL stay in tune. Ppl like to use 2 springs to make it easier to dive..but thats what causes it to not stay in tune.

  • @Biskitt5

it has 3 springs. its just getting the correct bridge height and making sure its completely level with the body while the locking nut also does its job

  • actualy its if ur good at it it comes out every time

  • and wow early "Top of The World"

  • House of Pain loll

  • its jump

  • can hear spanish fly, eruption, catherdal

  • mini les paul

  • I hear Ideas that he used on later albums

  • he had good velocity back then...hope his new shit has some aggressive attack and quality old school tone---I'll puke if he uses that silly sustainer pickup garbage

  • man, the audio quality hurts my head... youch... sounds like eddy!

  • That is most def Ed. Get your head out of your ass. Nobody else can do that.

  • You can tell its not Eddie way too much effects and noise good poser though~

  • What effects? And the noise is from the amateur recording.

  • Top Of The World!!!!!! do i get a prize?

  • Tha Master at work!

  • This is the shit

  • hell yea!

  • Wow. A gem unearthed!

  • S'pose that the point is that most people can do this now - er...but he was doing it 25 years ago - and no-one else was.

  • Shut up moron!!

  • You're the fucking moron, pal, having failed to recognise that the comment was favourable to Eddie as an innovator.

  • Passed out on the bathroom floor on his wedding night - how would you know this?

  • Sounds a lot like how I sound when I plug in and mess around...but about 10x better than me. ;)

  • oh shit top of the world is in there!!!!

  • Actually, if you listen to the rhythm at the end of "Jump", you'll notice that it is the intro rhythm to "Standing on Top of the World". Almost everything on this mix is from 1984.

  • Yeah but there is still some "TOTW" in there, thats not the opening riff.. some other rythm stuff..

  • Same here!

  • 5:50...the best poster promo shot ever- even Air Jordan was jealous!

  • wow, on top of the world right in the middle of the vid. didnt see that one coming. :P then again it was jump too.

  • I have this. 4 hours worth of rare jam sessions/alternate takes. This track of Eddie playing is 24 1/2 minutes long.

  • This is from a VH boot CD called Guitarman.

    JB

  • 25 years later and still they copy the master. I mean EVH is the single most influential force of rock guitar ever if you're under 50. Yes there are other elements, but throw in a shot of VH and there it is...magic.

  • Just my opinion, but I think Ed is the best guitar player EVER.

  • Im right there with ya man

  • ..if you don't have it already- I have a bootleg from 77 )it think it's called 77lives on) Unedited live stuff, incuding the original Eruption solo as he played it BEFORE adding the two haned tapping segment...very cool- love the vid/track

  • @vhfanjack Me too. He is the best.

  • @vhfanjack me too

  • same here... we wouldnt have modern guitar without EVH period.

  • you're damn right

  • 100% agree

  • I dont think Ed's the greatest...I FREAKIN KNOW IT MAN!!! lol

    -Tyler

  • jajajaja...You´re damn right , as simple as that ...jajaja... the others come behind him , let them deal with it !!

  • @mesa401 Yea He is the Best But Im Better 8-) Lool

  • @mesa401

    That's not your opinion; it's a fact.

  • Comment removed

  • the best. don't need to say anymore.

  • I just love Ed... Such feel & ATTITUDE!!!!

  • the king

  • this sounds like a recording i did directly through a mixer about 20yrs ago.I wonder if this is really eddie??

  • Eddie influenced so many guitarist, He is is just so great but not the best. He is 1 of them.

  • Wolfgang should get Ed to listen to some of this stuff.

  • This is good stuff! YEA!!! EDDIE!!

  • This is the guitar man session.

  • Top of the world back in 83 Hagar fans! LOL

  • Ha the Hagar era song is Top of the World. He also played that riff as a fill somewhere on the 83 us festival concert.

  • No doubt this guy was a pro. The phrasing and the musical nature of his playing is amazing. He deserves all the accolades he has received.

  • Fucking sick

  • man...rape me with a blunt object!!!! hell yes!!!

  • The king speaking. That's what this is. No one in the history of recorded music could express himself with an insturment like Edward Van Halen.

  • Kick fuckin' aSS Dude!!

  • Jack this is so great ;peace[Freddie]

  • i cant even imagine the jewels eddie probably has just lying around in his archive

  • The Master Shredder! What a great tape...there is only 1 Edward VH!! Always had it...Always Will!

  • this is awesome
