And the house is always 100+ years old, in the middle of nowhere, there's always some odd caretaker lurking about or some hidden passages or weird photo album, there's always SOMETHING not quite right about the place... but it's the kid's fault that they're acting weird. Even when all these traumatic events begin (bizarre accidents, unexplained deaths, etc.) it's still the kid's fault they're acting weird.
