  • @er1975us - thanks. That makes since. It's just way too off and strange on picture book.

  • Are, are they actually playing on this? I don't see any cables, and other than some reverb on the voices, it's so awful similar to the familiar.

  • @MrAlexcellent they are really singing ...but over the actual instrumental track.....the first Karaoke ?..haha

  • wow! Dave was just breath takingly beautiful and he sounds fantastic, of course they all sounded great

  • The Kinks!!! :-)

  • dave davies had fuckin style

  • The three people who dislike this video need to get their ears tested

  • @D66DuCane Hear bloody hear!

  • Comment removed

  • The Village Green Preservation Society, simply one of the best albums in the history of rock and roll.

  • the kinks are better than the stones...i said

  • last appearance with quaife?

  • Always loved this song...rolls so smooth...

  • I appreciate that they didn't make their music about drugs, or being stoned, etc.. they kept their music true in that respect.

That said, there was plenty of psychedelic music I truly love, but the Kinks would have been too different if they didn't keep it the way they did

  • They actually used drugs. You can tell from Lazy Old Sun

  • Thank you WhiteRose63 for this wonderful footage

As hard as I try to make the Beatles a good band I just can not compare them with the Kinks

    They dont even come close!!

  • Dave forever...

  • Um, Ray...YOUR FUCKING GIRLY HAIRCUT! WTF?

  • Love it so much

funny: only the voices are live

  • Is it just me or does this sound kind of like a CCR song? Shoot, I still like it (after all, it is the kinks!!)..but yeah.

  • @chalklava If it sounds like CCR that is probably because they both listened to people like Howlin' Wolf

  • Yeah but they did their own thing, they were still so unique and nothing was put on with them. Ray was writing about it. Dave was just so ridiculously beautiful too..

  • sorry to burst your bubble, but the kinks were totally on drugs, especially dave. check out their autobiographies.

  • how does Dave Davies get his hair to curl in and then fling out?

  • @dubbly1: Rollers, dear nut, 'cause, uh...*that's* how he rolls (that---and a good shot of the ol' "Adorn").

  • again great footage i've never seen before of this ace combo - top ho - Pete Quaife RIP you were a most brilliant KinK!!!

  • ray, thats one shitty haircut

  • I guess he means figuratively he's a steam powered train.

  • Pete!

  • pete my friend you will be missed... we will always have roblin lake...

  • Rest in Peace Pete!

  • The first song is a reworkings of Howlin' Wolf's "Smokestack Lightning"

  • RIP Peter Quaife.

  • wooo hoooo. kinky!

  • Aaaah yes, The Kinks do good old blues inspired rock and roll - Sooooo well! Then, there are the gorgeous melodic ones like "Shangri-La" and "Autumn Almanac". I love the Beatles dearly, but these guys are something special....God Save the Kinks!

  • @kinksboss1 I haven't managed to get a copy of it on vinyl, but i did find an original 1968 Stereo reel to reel tape of the Village Green Preservation Society so all is good :)

  • Yeah, this is the END-time scene for the original Kinks (with original bassist Quaife). Great footage. You can tell it's from '68, cause Ray's hair kept getting longer in 1969. Note Dave playing Ray's sunburst Telecaster. The whole band's hair quotient would be super long by the next year. They're still Mod here!. haha.

  • a true gem. not many tv apearences exist of the Kinks promoting the commercially ill fated village green preservation society lp. It's one of my absolute all time favourites. so this actually has to be 1968 because bass player pete quaife had already left by 1969. please correct me if I'm mistaken..

  • @Melodyfayre Hiya as far as i know this clip is from Jan 1969 Pete left in April of that year. He was involved in the rehearsals for the next album Arthur but left before that LP was released.

  • Great clip, although I wish the powers that were would have allowed the band to just play the song live, rather than allow them to do only live vocals over the studio track...

  • KILLER! Thanks for sharing this, God Save The Kinks!

  • Amazing clip! Whenever I listen to Steam Powered Trains, I imagine it playing as Dennis Skinner and Tony Benn sit atop of Tower Bridge drinking tea as the world blows up in a nuclear disaster.... Perfect soundtrack to the whole apocalyptic future thing.

  • Good quality clip of the great KINKS,more KINKS please

  • ray davies signed my kinks album arthur i wonder how much its worth now hehe.

  • I found this video months ago and have watched it about 100 times, this and other great Kinks videos, just wandering around YouTube...from what I've read recently VGPS is today the Kinks' best-selling non-compilation album

  • i think vgps is the second greatest album of all time.

  • I'd like to know what in your opinion is the first greatest album...who knows, we might even agree! In any case if you put VGPS up among the top albums I'm sure we share a similar passion

  • if i put vgps among the top albums?i already said i rank it second greatest album of all time thats among the top albums, the greatest album of all time id bet 1 million bucks u never even heard of it,its by a 60s group called love and the album is called forever changes read reviews from people who have purchased it on amazon,or look it up in the amg guide to rock book,if you dont have that book you should get it its the bible of music.

  • @jayfey77 You shouldn't be so smug and elitist. You're hardly the only one who's heard and appreciated "Forever Changes" and it's actually a pretty well known record. I have no doubt that Pollywollyish is familiar with it. There's no need to blatantly suggest that you are more musically erudite than him or her, or anyone else for that matter.

  • really cause i dont know anyone under 30 who knows it 99 percent of people under 30 dont know iti could name hundreds of groups from the 60s that most people never heard of, you'd be surprised how many people from the 60s never even heard of the nazz or the original version of hello its me they only know todd rundgrens version, and thats amazing considering it went to number 2,and forever changes isnt a pretty well known record among the young people or old too.

  • I love this so much. Took me wayyy too long to find it on YT.

  • Truely amazng album, which sadly never got the credit it deserved. I prefer the Beatles myself, but Village Green Preservation Society is the thing i listen to most. It has to be the best 'concept' album ever made. I've been trying to get hold of the original LP but can't get it ANYWHERE and any on eBAY sell for hundreds of pounds each. Clearly it's getting moreand more popular which shows how ahead of it's time it was back in 1968.

  • @SuperCameronb

I have 2 copies of it on vinyl and Great Lost Kinks on vinyl

  • This must be one of Peter Quaife's final moments with the band. Most 1969 footage has John Dalton on bass.

  • I have only recently discovered "the Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society", the album from which these songs are taken...truly a masterpiece

  • The LP that these songs were taken from ranks right up there with Lennon and McCartney`s best like Rubber Soul.

  • Ray Davies is the best storyteller rock n roll has ever known

  • How good is to see them again!!

  • This is so amazing; hands down one of the best records ever made.

  • Dave feeling the music :D

  • the kinks give the people what they want.

  • I love them!!!!

  • Ray's English-ness is very hot.

  • I'm so glad HP or who ever it was used Picture Book for their commercials a few years ago. Gave me a chance to educate the younger fans about TVGPS.

  • extremely bad-ass.

  • This song is just amazing watching for the first time high as hell

  • The Kinks were one of the only bands not to turn hippie and drugs. Thanks Ray for not following the crowd and doing what music YOU wanted to do and not doing music just because the Beatles were.

  • Claps.

  • No one was doing music because the Beatles were. The Beatles were one of the first British bands to become commercially successful at a time when the music industry did not take bands seriously, and opened the door for other British bands. Dave Davies did do drugs and even overdosed and was rushed to the hospital.

  • @worldsno1drwhofan

So sober and never ever used drugs. Why u say so?

For me are stunned as others or more....

  • @worldsno1drwhofan the kinks did not turn hippie or drugs... true... but they recorded the first psychedelic song ever "SEE MY FRIENDS"... Correct me if im wrong...

  • @worldsno1drwhofan Ray Davies used drugs...and I wouldn't doubt most of the band didn't at least try drugs once. It was the time period not the scene.

  • @worldsno1drwhofan Though the Ray and Dave did not become hippies like John Lennon in the Beatles, then certainly got involed in drugs. That's a fact. Also, alot of their songs are very trippy, for example in the Green Village Society album, the song 'Wicked Anabrella' is very hypnotic.

For the record The Hollies were the only mainstream band of the 60s that didn;t do drugs.

  • @ArcticTalent1 Well Graham Nash liked his bit weed much to the apparent distaste of the other lads.

  • Oh what can I say I just love the kinks, since their very beginings. Thanks for this video its amazing.

  • yaya!! this one is my fave. very, um, easy to watch;>

  • This is a reminder for me just how talented The Kinks are and what genious's the Davies brothers are. They are surely missed- I would pay any price to see them. Thanx to WhiteRose for posting my fav. video.

  • As well as the musical genius, just revel in that HAIR.

    PROPER boy's haircuts!

  • I agree - Ray and Dave Davies just have legendary hair!

  • Ray looks freakin gorgeous on this vid!

  • the kinks are AMAZING,

  • Vocals are live, music is not.

  • Definitely not hearing live - watch the acoustic guitar that plays itself at 5:35 ;-)

  • love you, mick

    <3 <3 <3 <3

  • Astounding!

Pete Quaife is a golden god.

  • I had to watch this video again. the kinks are genius :)

  • What a weird guitar Ray has.

  • It's a Fender acoustic, with the electric headstock. they were pretty crappy. Fender never could make a decent acoustic....

  • Thank for posting this excellent video.

One of my favourite from Ray's personal 2Sgt. Pepper" aka VGPS.

    Keep up the excellent work...:-)

  • Sounds like they are singing live along with the record. The riff at 4:58 to 5:06 is simple scale, but it is worked in nicely as an integral part of this song. I love the KinKs, the Village Green album and this song. Glad to see it here on You Tube.

  • Oh yeah!!! :D Once again another kick ass vid of my boys! ;)

  • this is great thanks whiterose63

  • thanks again for uploading whiterose.....

  • got to be one of the best vids of the Kinks on Utube.

  • I want this video played at my funeral. LOVE ITTTTT! Keep on rolling, raymond Dpuglas, till your dying day....

  • kinks at their finest hour! the village green is one of the best albums of ALL TIME!! please gimme more!!! ;)

  • THE KINKS STILL THE GREATEST ROCK BAND OF ALL TIME, RAY DAVIES THE GREATEST SONGWRITER OF ALL TIME AND DAVE DAVIES THE MOST UNDER RATED GUITAR HERO OF ALL TIME. GOD SAVE THE KINKS AND ALL THEIR FANS WHO HAVE SUPPORTED THEM OVER THE YEARS THROUGH THE HIGHS AND LOWS. THANK YOU FOR THE DAYS RAY! AND FOR ALL WE KNOW THEY STILL MAY HAVE ALONG WAY TO GO. YOU CANT STOP THE MUSIC OR THE KINKS. - Frank Lima, The Montvale, New Jersey Hillbilly Boy, aka Dan the Fan

  • wonderful thx

  • 4:58-5:06 = Pete Quaife play so god!!!!

  • Ooooooh je connaissais pas cette vidéo! super! enfin cette chanson en live!

  • wow this is a brilliant find. apparently they never performed VGPS songs live, and was in the sixties in colour too! It's weird seeing Ray in colour with beatle hair - i'm used to the rocker hair in the 70s lol.

  • esp mick avory =)

  • wow the kinks look SOOO good !!!!!!

  • Amazing!

    Thank you!

  • Picture Book is a damn fine pop song.

  • It's obvious why the KINKS were Jim Morrison's favorite band.

  • It's the first time I see it, on youtube there isn't too many clips of The Kinks from this year, thanks so much:)

  • Dave is really enjoying himself, showing that he is really the master of the guitar.

  • Wouldn't it be awesome if there was a Kinks reunion? All four original members are still alive, unlike the other british groups of the same era. Imagine if they reunited and kicked off their set with this song, with this video playing in the background? Awesome, hey a guy can dream can't he?

  • Goddamn, that would be fecking awesome indeed...

    We should ask em =D

  • id prefer john dalton if there was a reunion... at least he didnt leave the band because it wasnt commercially successful enough. a finer bassist too

  • This is truly awesome! why aren't more videos of the KINKS such as this one posted more often. I've never seen this video, it is truly quite rare. I wonder if they did any other songs off the VGPS? Would be great to see them do Animal Farm or Village Green, as well as Do you remember Walter? Any song of theirs. I wonder if this is from 1969, seems more like 1968, Pete Quaife is still with the band.

  • On Dec. 21, 1968, they did "Animal Farm" , "Village Green Preservation Society", and "Picture Book" on an ITV color TV program, but the network recorded over the videotapes after the initial broadcast. So these VERY rare clips are all that survives.

  • LOVE IT! thanks so much White Rose. Last of the steam powered trains is one of my faves and never saw it live beforew. 2 great songs from VGPS

  • An exelent clip, which is indeed taken from The Julie Felix Show(BBC).This clip was saved from destruction in the early 1970's by Bob Pratt, who also saved a large multitude of material from work which was being thrown out,was known for being quite the collector.Bob also saved the Kinks "Apeman" performance from a 1970 Top Of The Pops, which is easliy found on youtube. Many thanks again for posting this great footage, might you possibly have any other footage from The Julie Felix Show?Just currious.

  • Absolutely SWWEEEET! Dave and Ray are sooo hot!

    Love this video~~thanks for posting!

  • I can't stop grinning.

  • Superb!

This is from the Julie Felix show from the BBC.

I saw this about a year ago at a television society that meets in Stourbridge.

Wonderful to see colour Kinks footage from the 60's.

Thanks ever so much for posting it.

  • Absolutely beyond belief; WOW. Seeing Ray and Dave smiling together singing during Picture Book makes me wish they could get together again. This made my day/week/month/year. Thanks.

  • great

  • This is fabulous. Thanks so much for posting!!!

  • No lo puedo creer!!!... nunca penser ver a the kinks interpretando este tema.. de mis favoritos.. enternamente agradecido por subir este mravilloso video...

  • HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!! WOWOWOWOWOWOW!!!

  • Can't remember seeing this before. Great quality and don't the boys look young (I know it's 39 years ago). Thanks for sharing.

  • Fuck me! Now we're gettin' somewhere.

    Any more village footage?

  • As with everyone else here I'm at a loss for words.....!! The proverbial motherload of 'hen's teeth', 'rocking horse shit' etc, etc.....THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I've waited most of life to see this footage, I'll be forever in your debt 'WhiteRose 63'.....xxxxx

  • God God God!!! Amazing!!

This is a historical document! We all will be very grateful forever for uploading this mightly good video.

This must be the first and the last time that Pete Quaife perfomed VGPS live

  • Yeah never thought I'd see live Village Green tunes - amazing footage ...

  • you still haven't, they're miming :D

  • NO THEY ARE NOT MIMING! They are not playing live but the vocals and harmonica are clearly live....Maybe you are a casual listener so you can't tell.

  • Vocal is certainly live.

  • Great video, sounds great! This must have been early 1969 because I saw the boys in Dec. 1969 and Dave's hair was very long.

  • This is an absolutely awesome video...one of the best yet. Ray and Dave look so young and beautiful and they sound great. There's never been a band like The Kinks -- NEVER!!

  • Thank you so much for this - wonderful to see such rare footage. I've checked the Doug's masterpiece and it appears to be from the BBC1 series "Once More With Felix" which was broadcast on January 7 1969. Amazing!

  • Thanks for telling me about this Heidi!

    What great, clear footage.

  • According to the book, this appears to be January of 1969

  • Incredible indeed. The VGPS album was released November 1968 and Pete Quaife left March 1969. He's still in the group here so the footage is probably early 1969. I'm going to check Doug Hinman's wonderful book.

    Thanks for posting this!

  • That is just too wonderful for words. They look and sound great. End of the line for Pete Quaife, but what a way to go. Just fantastic!!!!!!

  • Okay, I'm going to gush now.

    This is incredible.

I never knew that clips of the original line up existed doing VGPS tunes.

    I couldn't be happier.
