Amazing. I'm have probably shat myself when I heard the plane coming. Either because I'd get arrested for wasting the air force's time because the plane was to investigate, or I'd be afraid of the plane running into the balloon.

guess the whale should be more careful about what it eats ehh. Either way the probability of a whale eating it? zip or close to it - Its also not illegal to release them and no way it got to 60,000 feet. it would probably pop at around 10-15 thousand feet. WIsh they had more "lift" power would love to stick a camera on one. but even my 20gram camera's are too heavy for these things.
You don't think they will go higher? I mean hot air balloon is a bit of a misnomer. the air inside does not need to be hot just WARMER than the surrounding air even by a few degrees is likely enough for this to lift. So unless the skin leaks heat back to the surrounding air faster than the sun can heat it up it should rise until it gets a leak. at least in theory
i wonder just how many of these things there are floating around out there? so far, i know of two. yours, and one my brother and i pieced together years ago.

the air would cool off at about 5-6000 feet before descending.
