I really like this Can of Worms show, but I had to stop watching at 5:20 because I could not stand Elka Whalan. I too like sports, but I too agree with the first opinion presented, and even if I didn't, it is a very respectable opinion. Whalan just isn't very modest is she?

My last statement wasn't written very well. But let me say this, Elka Whalan is so annoying. So many sports people seem to think sport is the most important thing in the world, when really it's not very important at all, not compared to other things.

Yes. Because sports people really make a difference. Or not. People who make a difference and are important to society should have more recognition, why is someone who throws a ball because it's fun or runs around for no real reason more important than someone who saves lives or changes lives or improves the world we live in? I'm not saying sports people are worthless? But heroes? Not to anyone who doesn't dream of being one themself.

I agree, we definitely hero-worship sportspeople too much. Although I think it's awesome and important to support Australia's sportspeople, scientists and researchers definitely need more support and publicism. What they do ultimately benefits society and helps improve quality of life. To me, that is more important than sporting victories.

we do hero worship our sportspeople too much. It is rediculous that we will all, almost religiously follow someone who, yeah has worked hard, but for what? amazing, they finished a race first. Why is it that we are not following and taking even the slightest notice of those people who are making discoveries to help save people's lives, and those who are going to and have been around the world, helping those less fortunate. sportsmen do not contribute to society in the slightest

It's really quite sad how little respect our scientists get. As a recently graduated science student, I have gotten to interact with many people in the scientific community. They are all intelligent, very hard-working people who are constantly struggling to make a living, let alone accolades. Science has given us so much, yet they still struggle to gain recognition with the general public. Don't you think this is unfair?
