Actually the UK had Hong Kong Island, the outlying islands and Kowloon into perpetuity. The problem was it would have been impossible to divide the New Territories after 1997 because the infrastructure and population was so entwined.

Today is the 14th anniversary of last day of British rule in HK - I think everything British will be gone by the beinginng of the 22nd century with statues of both Queen Victoria and King George VI removed if China took full control of HK after 2047. Victoria Park would became Mao Park!
Every British street names would be removed and replaced by Chinese names. Police no longer march in British style and uniforms no longer British-look. Maybe I am wrong but I wonder!

@alonsog1997 Well, that is correct - when Mrs Thatcher visited Beijing in 1981 she tells Deng about the treaty that would have kept the British in Hong Kong and Kowloon and leave the New Terrorities back to the Chinese as according to treaty signed in 1898 but Deng was overheard to have said "No. I want it all back" This was the beinginng of talks that eventfully leads to return of HK to China.

When Thatcher tried to tell Deng in 1981 on a visit to Beijing to allow us to keep HK and Kowloon after 1997 but Deng said "NO, I want it all back" and said all treaties were worthless because we stole HK from Chinese in an illegal war. He said HK are legally belongs to China so have right to take back HK. Thatcher had no choice.

@CanCayate2 You can hold another passport and hold HKID at the same time, e.g. child born to Chinese citizens of Hong Kong (or holder of HKSAR passports), they will automatically have right of abode in HK and can get a HKID, but if they want to apply for HKSAR passport themselves they must renounce their other citizenships, which is pointless, you don't get any extra benefits for holding an HKSAR passport.

Like, when you borrow money from a bank, the bank will compare your face and your portrait on your HKID. Then record your name & ID number as shown on the HKID. The chip and your fingerprint will never be scanned.

But now, there're only 2 types of immigrants --- the POORS (high portion) and the RICHES (low portion). The RICHES only use their HK citizenships for moving to US, etc. They won't stay long nor contribute to HK. But for the POORS, they stay in HK doing nothing, paying no tax, and getting all the social benefits from HK gov. Which category are you in?

I have a British passport (not a BNO. I know you have difficulties in differentiating a British passport and a BNO, just to state clear again). I have a HKID and this automatically grants me the right to get a HKSAR passport at anytime I like. Every HKer knows this. I don't know what kind of social life you had when you're in HK.
