He did this along with Jacksonville Skyline on his recent solo acoutsic (Ashes and Fire) tour and though everyything was great, these were 2 of the best songs he played.
Hey! I was at this show! It was at the Hi-Pointe. At the time I worked at a local drum shop; drummer Steven Terry (the only guy I've ever met in danger of winning a Mac Davis look-alike contest) came in earlier that day with their road manager to buy some drum heads. At the time i'd only heard of Whiskeytown but was already going to see the show that night. They said "come on down and we'll put you on the guest list". Very nice guys.
A few years later I moved to Seattle where (unknowingly) guitarist Phil Wandscher relocated. He'd heard about me (I'm a motorcycle mechanic) and called me up to get the carburetors synced on his old Honda CB750. When he told me his name I said "Phil Wandscher? From Whiskeytown? Dood! We've met before in St. Louis!" It was pretty neat to get to work on his bike and hang for a while.
It is Ryan Adams. This is a great fuckin song too. Young RA, just feeling the sweat and grind of the road, making a name for himself and doing what he loves. Great clip.
As much as I like Flying Burrito Brothers and respect that they came first, Whiskeytown just blows them away for sheer songwriting and evocative brilliance.
Check out "Strangers Almanac" -- that has to be one of the finest albums ever recorded.
Very, very nice. A friend I work with turned me on to these guys. Thanks for sharing this video.
