He may have been tough...tough life breeds tough men. The man served one master, his music...look through his anthology ... at one point or another the best bluegrass masters played FOR him... other than the great Earl Scruggs, the man was the master of one of the defining features of bluegrass.... perfection in timing. I asked him at a festival (learning banjo at the time) what was the most important thing to practice..timing son, work on timing.
JImmy was one of the original Opry talents, but he was in it when it was the
Ryman auditorium, back in the day with Minnie Pearl, Moon Mulican, Johnny Cash, Kitty Wells, Johnny Mathis(country), Archie Campbell(before heehaw)- I always his music on my Starday records, and now with youtube I can see what he looks like.
It's encourageing to know that Jimmy Martin and I started out the same way ....with a Gene Autry guitar. I only paid $3.00 for mine though. I bought it from my brother when he needed some money for a date ....cheap date, huh? That was almost 57 years ago. Of course, I didn't and don't have Jimmy's voice or talent, but I've got the love for Bluegrass.
Sat in the back of that BIG BLACK LINCOLN with SUNNY SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN on the back..Jimmy, Jame King and Myself..VERY INTERESTING ..Told GREAT STORIES how he started with Bill Monroe..Drank plenty of RED 7 ..That's what he liked..When he got TOO DRUNK though he was something else...Paul Williams said this.."IF JIMMY HAD JUST LET HIS TALENT SPEAK FOR ITSELF...HE WOULD HAVE BEEN INDUCTED IN THE OPRY..When he was drinking he was OVERBEARING...His history in bluegrass is secure..Great..
Great respect for this man. I busted my back, 13years old, all spring n'summer pickin rock for a sod buster so's I could buy a $10. Sears Robuck gitar. I been on the road for 35 years now with bands n' shows. I now play a custom made Martin D-28. We all got our stories.
The King of Bluegrass - then and forever. There won't be another one like him. He didn't become king because some publicity agent or record label made him one. He's the king because he earned the title. He did what he had to do, worked hard at it, and did it the best he could. And his best was more than enough.
I emailed haim asking for an autograph. He sent me one and not to long after he passed. I am going to cherish this autograph till the day I die. RIP Jimmy
Dang, not even a whimper of why they didn't put him on the Opry! Anyone who followed Jimmy's music knows he was a genius in his field. We miss ya Jimmy!!!
Jimmy was too much of an outlaw or independent for the Opry. Just like the case of Hank Williams Sr. and Johnny Cash...the opry didn't know what it missed by not inducting Jimmy Martin.
is any of his band menbers still alive . if so i like to know and if they remenber jess woods from det, mich. formly fr rose hill vir,

If you play solid rhythm (ala Jimmy Martin) with the right bass runs, that IS Bluegrass!
