  • What did you call stupid blockbuster? It's obvious you don't know what a great movie is...

  • How can Avatar make over $1 BIllion - and not get best picture of the YEAR! I think the people have spoken!!!!!!

  • Because it isn't more than an stupid blockbuster.

  • The Hurt Locker took 6 oscars including Best motion picture film the of year, And best Director. Congrats to

    Kathryn Bigelow

James cameron could suck his wrinkled balls !!!

  • the hurt locker just won best picture

i honestly thought it was going to be avatar

im wondering if this outcome is because of a somewhat political veiwpoint. First female best director whose picture wins the award.

Well congratz and cheers to the hurt locker, now i really need to see it in order to make sense of this.

  • WTF They fucked up Big Time .

They did a segment honoring those that died in 2009. Half of which werent even actors ! Guess what?

They left Farrah Faucet off !

  • At the end of his life, the deadliest gunfighter of the Old West is given a choice: Hell or redemption. He chooses redemption and God's Archangel transports him to modern day Los Angeles to serve bloody, frontier justice on the worst dregs of society.

  • 10 Nominees ? Awesome !!

  • holly shit!! The Oscars year by year giving us surprises...it was Slumdog Millionaire at the 81st..and now this..bravo!

  • I would like to take this time, and nominate FOX for the biggest prick teaser award 2009-2010 in their series The Sarah Connor Chronicles

  • Top 5 from #1 being the best and 5 being the worst.

    1. Up

    2. Up in the Air

    3. Inglorious Bastards

    4. 500 Days of Summer

    5. The Road

  • Obviously Up in the Air will win(politics), but here's my top 5

    1.Precious

    2.Inglorious Basterds

    3.A Serious Man

    4.The Hurt Locker

    5.Up In the Air

  • Where the hell is "A Single Man"!!!!

There is a bloody animation film but not by far the best movie in a long time, and Julianne Moore deserves an award for her performance. Please how can I take the Academy serious with this list.

What next? Best actor is the Frog in the New Disney film?

  • Avatar for the win

  • Ok, lets give Avatar an award!!! It's not good enough that it made a billion dollars more than at least 10 better movies that came out. Let's just totally snub The Road and Moon. Not a single nomination. That's just bogus. Check out my Oscar reaction vid on my channel.

  • I loved The Road Viggo was fantastic!

  • I think the main reason why they decided to put 10 nominees is because The Dark Knight and really good animated films have been left off.

  • really i don't think avatar should have been in the best picture list...

  • This year my winners of nomies are: *The Hurt Locker *Inglourious Basterds *UP *An Education *Precious *Up in the Air *District 9 *Invictus *NINE OTHER: Avatar, Public Enemies, The Messenger
  • @tubebeen and avatar???

  • i think this is an excellent move by the academy ..... as for sure now more films will get deserved recognition and appeal to a larger world audience. WAY TO GO ACADEMY!!!!

  • 10 nom I Think Are: A Serious Man An Education Avatar District 9 The Hurt Locker * WINNER Inglourious Basters Invictus Precious: Based On The Novel Push... Up Up In The Air
  • Who can name the three films (since the 1st Annual Academy Awards) that won the top 5 prizes: Actor, Actress, Director, Picture, Screenplay. Also, what two films share 14 nominations?

  • Oooo is that a quiz?

    OK:

    It Happened One Night (1934)

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975)

The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

For the nominations I'd guess All About Eve and Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

  • I think the pictures that got 14 nom in history are "All About Eve" and "Titanic". "The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King" got 11 nom and won all of them.

  • @Stephanie3189 All About Eve AND TITANIC

  • im very glad the reporter mentioned The Dark Knight since it was a huge disappointment that it didnt make it to Best Picture to millions of people that saw it! DARK KNIGHT should have been nominated!

  • Nine should win BEST PICTURE !!

  • Iglourious Basterds should win Best Picture, Screenplay/Script (Tarantino), Director (Tarantino), and Best Supporting Actor (Christoph Waltz -- "The Jew Hunter").

  • Absolutely! That should win Best Picture and Tarantino should win Screenplay

  • it wont win best picture because the acadmy wont buy it but it will win screenplay, tarrentino might get a nomination and waltz will win best supporting actor

  • My Best Picture picks: 1. Precious 2. Up in the Air 3. Hurt Locker 4. Invictus 5. Bright Star 6. An Education 7. Lovely Bones 8. Nine 9. A Serious Man 10. Hard to say...Up is animated, Avatar is scifi, Basterds is Tarantino, 500 Days of Summer is indie and funny...you see the problem.
  • My New Predictions: Avatar District 9 The Hurt Locker Inglourious Basterds Invictus Nine Precious Star Trek Up Up in the Air
  • Predictions: Inglorious Basterds Up Up in the Air Nine It's Complicated Hurt Locker Precious (500) Days of Summer Invictus District 9
  • What is it with people and thinking 9 is a good enough movie to merit even an oscar nomination let alone best picture?? It might have an outside chance at animated picture but there's no way in hell it gets nominated for best picture.

  • not that "9", the musical "Nine"

  • Not "9", the musical Nine. 9 won't even get a nom for Best Animated.

  • My Predictions: Avatar District 9 The Hangover Invictius The Lovely Bones Nine Precious Star Trek Up Up in the Air
  • Best Original Screenplay Up The Hurt Locker *(winner) Sin Nombre Inglorious Basterds An Education Best Adapted Screenplay The Lovely Bones Precious *(winner) Invictus Fantastic Mr. Fox NINE
  • Revised List of the Following Catgories of Nominees: Best Picture- Up The Hurt Locker * (winner) Inglorious Basterds Precious Nine The Lovely Bones The Tree of Life An Education Up in the Air District 9

  • Sid was born in 1940, the year before 1939, and yet he made the speech like he was part of the academy back then.

  • the two movies i would want to win are Julie and Julia and Nine. my two favs!

  • I agree. Julie and Julia should be nominated. But I think it is going to be Nine that wins best picture.

    Streep for lead

    Freeman for lead

one of the Nine girls for supporting

and Waltz from Basterds for supporting.

Spoilers (don't freak out if these choices are somewhat, irrelevant): Star Trek, Watchmen, Avatar, Moon, (500) Day of Summer, State of Play. Its al I've good for now.

  • You're absolutely right. I saw it multiple times because Heath Ledger died. Not because it was an amazing movie, or anything. But because he died.

That's also why I bought the movie on Blu Ray.

  • replace shutter island with amelia because shutter island is not coming out this year. and also replace inglourious basterds with the road and it think we have a good 10

  • Predictions: 1. Avatar 2. Inglourious Basterds 3. District 9 4. Up 5. Star Trek 6. The Hangover 7. Public Enemies 8. (500) Days of Summer 9. The Informant 10.Where the Wild Things Are

  • im betting on District 9 for winning

  • My predictions: 1. Nine 2. Invictus 3. Shutter Island 4. The Lovely Bones 5. Avatar 6. Up 7. The Hurt Locker 8. The Informant 9. Inglourious Basterds 10. The Serious Man Dark Horse District 9
  • I am going to be posting my predictions today

  • Now the question remains, how will Billy Crystal or Hugh Jackman be able to sing about ten best picture nominees in under three minutes?

  • I think "Hurt Locker" will at the least get nominated, but I'm really hoping "Up" will win because it was absolutely fantastic. Haven't seen "Hurt Locker," but all the reviews have been glowing.

  • Sounds like a great idea.

But I must say that it is a little too late to begin.

I mean, look at the films that have come out so far, and the films that will be coming out. There aren't many potential best picture nominees, let alone winners.

  • The expansion might give a chance to a animated/foreign films or normally ignored like genre like comedy, this would not change anything simply because there would be always 1, 2 maybe even 3 frontrunners through the awards season and the rest would still be overlooked. Also, 1939, was a rare exception, the last great year I can remember is 1994, and movies that should have WON like Shawshank Redemption/Pulp Fiction still lost out!

  • 'maybe even a comedy"

     comedy is the best

  • this should be interesting

  • yo academy, you aint gonna boost your ratings cuz you dissed Dark Knight in 08", we don't have anything this year so great. No big box office hit unless you wana nominate Transformers 2, ha lol.

  • The Hurt Locker, Up, Ponyo (possibly), Nine, and such are all contenders.

  • Just imagine if this was put into effect last year. Here's my interpretation: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button The Dark Knight Frost/Nixon Gran Torino In Bruges Milk The Reader Slumdog Millionaire Wall-E The Wrestler
  • Movies that could be cool to see nominated:

    Star Trek

    Harry Potter 6

    The Hurt Locker

    Sin Nombre

    Up

    500 Days of Summer

    and other praised titles.

  • yea

i defiantly believe that The Hurt Locker will be nominated for best picture

i havent seen it but i have heard a lot of positive things about it

    =]

  • I few of yours look like they're pretty legit. The Serious Man probably cause of the Coens. Ivictus, Shutter Island, and The Hurt Locker. It could be a toss up between Ponyo and Up because the guy who did Spirited Away is doing Ponyo or they both can be.

I still say Funny People should be in it and possibly Taking Woodstock

  • I think Sid Ganis didn't like The dark knight. You can tell by his expression at 6: 45.>:(

  • if there are more than 15 animated films submitted for oscar consideration the field will expand to 5. i'm not sure about the number but that's how the rule goes

  • i dont see the point of expanding the number of nominations. it would be nice for the movies who will be nominated, but eventually there's only one prize and i hardly think a documentry or an animated would win that. (don't get me wrong, i looove those kind of movies, but the academy doesnt)

  • there arent that many good films each year to be nominated but i like the idea

im pretty sure "up" will get an oscar nod

  • Comment removed

  • I love 'maybe even a comedy'

  • he said "maybe even a comedy" at the end of the list of possibilities like comedy was such a bad genre for a best picture...

  • Finally films such as The Dark Knight (yes I know its currently ineligible for nomination) or any other non-drama film will receive a nomination.

  • Funny People enough said will be nomination. So will Star Trek.

  • 10 nods makes it moore interessting for smal or sc-fi movies

  • (500) Days of Summer should be considered within the 10 Best Picture Nomination this year. Saw a screening of it last week, very fast moving and very stylishly done.

  • Now, Bruno will be nominated.

    Thanks, Sid Ganis.

  • 10 are too much!!! NO!! Don't touch the Oscars!

  • I can't even think of one film so far this year that seems oscar-worthy.

  • What about Up?

  • The Hurt Locker wasnt out four weeks ago.

  • they should have done this last year. There were just too many films last year that could have made it.

  • yea ur right, that's where this idea came from i think. the dark knight especially i'm sure was in their mind. this year i'm sure it will be lame and stupid and they'll have films nominated that a lot of people think shouldn't be. last year would have been much more appropiate for this.

  • mmm not too many films I think but it lacks of Wall-e and TDK, so it was a horrible list of 5 "best" films

  • I understand in, 'fair chance and / or choice'... but BAD IDEA !

Oscar should keep it to 5 nominees, representing, "THE 5 VERY BEST FILMS" of that particular year; according to the Academy's members and / or peers.

I think it would INSPIRE all the up-and-coming film makers to produce a QUALITY PRODUCT.

  • LMMFAO... Clever... Good One, M8 !

  • This HD is throwing me off! Is this HD or CGI! It's so intense!!

  • It's a great idea, but 1939 certainly had many more great-quality movies than in 2009. Hollywood will either have to stop making so much trash, or the Academy will have to open up to many more foreign (not just foreign-language) films. Good luck!

  • sid ganis aged a lot. anyway, i'm shocked with the news but somehow why not give a chance to have 10 nominees for best pic instead of five. and it would stopped us to complain on what's what overlooked.

  • Yeah, you're probably right!

It's gonna have to be a ten hours show!

    :-P

  • A great decision!!! more pics is a good thing!!

I mean "the reader" being nominated and not "Dark Knight". You guys must have been out of your minds!

  • I somewhat felt this way about 2007 when No Country for Old Men won. I thought it definitely deserved the prize but then again, I though 20 films that year should have won. It looked like there were more great films that year than good ones. So maybe it'll be more interesting this time... or not. Who knows?

  • The idea of having 1 'Best Picture' chosen out of 10 with a possibility of some being an animation, comedy, or documentary is completely ABSURD! I learn great lessons from all 81 Academy Award-winning pictures and there is NOTHING to learn or relate to from an animation, comedy, or documentary. Personally, I don't like the idea of a producer getting his/her film nominated with 'less' difficulty...

  • Good grief. What a bunch of crap! Does the world really "need" 10 nominees for Best Picture?!? Now the show's just going to be longer and we'll have to watch more crumby clips. And could Sid Ganis be any more smarmy and self-important?!? What a jerk! The Academy "needs" a new spokesperson!

  • You can tell Sid Ganis is being "paid" very well.

  • Possible nominees Watchmen,Star Trek,Shutter Island,Brüno,Up,Public Enemies,The lovely bones and well we will see beautiful movie

  • Funny People they are saying is probably going to get a guarenteed shot at it

  • Not Star Trek or Bruno

    Publie Enemies,Up,Shutter Island,Watchmen,

    thats it.LOL

  • i go with Public Enemies all the way

  • More greed from Hollywood!

  • the smartest decision the academy has made since... forever

  • That is so cool. I can't wait to watch the oscars this year!

  • Slumdog millionaire didnt deserve best picture.

TCCO Benjamin Button, Milk, Wall-E and other movies deserve this award more than slumdog millionaire

  • THIS IS AMAZING! it will be even more exciting because we'll have more surprises, like "crash", and not predictable winners, like "slumdog millionaire".

  • Good luck on finding 10 films in a year worth nominating these days.

  • Dumb dumb idea. We're not in 1939. We're in an era when movies like "Crash:" wins a Best Picture Oscar and other equally lame films get nominated for the big one year after year. Too bad they waited so long. Maybe Edward Wood, Jr. could have had a shot at the Big One!

  • I have nothing against 10 nominees. I think it's a good idea.

  • I wish that this had happened earlier so Wall E and The Dark Knight could've been given a shot

  • Fuck this shit.

  • I hope Up gets a best pic nod. Wonderful film. Last year was a good year b/c of Winslet but other than that bleh.

  • 10 is way too much! 5 is ideal, and 10 just would reduce chances for deserving movies to win...

  • great idea!

  • yeah...... the animation deserve to be nominated too....... some are really really deserve to be best pictures. not just best animated film.

  • i still think they're finally going to give a Comedy a true shot. but Dark Knight and Wall-E should've gotten it last year over The Reader.

I made a list earlier saying that Funny People probably has one of the strongest shots at getting it they're saying the movies is great. And I completely forgot about Ivictus (the Human Factor) Morgan Freeman is freaking awesome so is Clint Eastwood. They're also saying that Adam Sandler could possibly get a Best Actor Nom for Funny People

  • and even the movie by clint eastwood is not in the list.....

  • This is a chaotic idea. There aren't even 10 good movies a year. The is the Academy's way of getting more viewers.

  • ur 100% right. theyre all about the money.

  • yes there are lots of good movies every year. it's just that they're not very well known, because they have limited distribution or are foreign.

  • That was my reaction too. There are so few good movies out, that 10 is just stupid and lessens whatever prestige the "Best Picture" award carried with it. However, with this change maybe studios will start putting out better product. Probably not...

  • I like the idea, but why not add a new category? A couple of years ago, they tried to pass the best stunt coreography. They should try to do that again. Also, the makeup and the song category should be extended to five nominations.

  • There are always 5 worthy best pictures released every couple of months, but are simply not considered by the academy as it stands now...an obvious one that has been mentioned before is 'The Dark knight'', that at least deserved a nod.

  • Hmm.. Not too keen on this idea. Don't the Oscars already have enough trouble condensing everything into a few hours? (Let's not forget the "hey let's blend the Best Song nominees into one short medly" decision of last year)

He gives a reason to nominate more than 5 films, but not to set the number at 10. 10 in 300 potential films means the films this year have around a 1 in 30 chance of nomination.

Why must the academy keep messing with a good thing? Stop fiddling with the Oscars, please!

  • If an animated film were to be nominated, I would want to see UP.

  • This decision, for me, is a double edged sword. Its great because not only does it give other underdog films the chance of snatching away the great prize but it also gives other genres a bit of recognition. However, 10 is wayyy too big and vast, which might mean that the award ceremony itself will take even longer to be seen on television and could be delayed from March to say maybe, May. I dont know about this.

  • of course theres alot more to choose from, worthy enough.

  • So far, the best movies of 2009 were Watchmen and Star Trek.

  • I think 10 should help a little. International films is a good idea. a Animated film would be nice to see in there, but that will never happen. Thats why the category was made so it could never happen again (Beauty and the Beast.)

  • This is a terrible idea. MAYBE 7 or something, but 10?!

  • Hopefully something good will come out of this.

  • Awesome.

  • The Dark Knight effect! Only thing that bugs me is that TDK should have been in the top five last year regardless!

  • here we go again

  • I agree. Whos to say that graphic novel characters cant tell a good story. Batman is no exception and should of been considered for many other categories besides cinematography (even though that one is important) and best supporting actor.

  • Bloody horrible idea. Half the time there aren't even 5 pictures worth of a nomination of Best Picture.

  • I was going to comment, but that is the basis of my idea. I would add that it would be a good idea to stop having that aberration that is foreign film oscar and do one best picture/more nominated..

  • agree. But last year, I would totally pick like 10 nomination.

  • FINALLY! i never understund why wall-e wasn't nominated to picture of the year although i didn't love the movie! and comedies.. yes, why not?! there are comedies better than some nominated dramas

  • Juno and Michael Clayton are fine films, arguably worthy of any legitimate Top 10. But crowding out Zodiac, The Lives of Others, Eastern Promises or the other 5 listed above? So the Wise Men can make their reverent pilgrimage to deliver deliver swag bags of gold, frankincense and myrrh to Ron Howard every Winter?

  • Comment removed

  • Comment removed

  • horrible list lol, idiot

  • please tell me what movies should be on the list what crappy drama will be on the list.

  • Funny People will be amazing.

  • Am I the only person in the world that thought the Dark Knight wasn't all that?

  • I kind of agree with u.

  • it was really good but WAY overhyped so yeah i agree with u

  • They need a category for 'Best Stunts' in film

  • With this past "political" B.S. that was nominated, it would make sense, but really 10??? Wonder if the BAFTAs will change? Or Golden Globes?

My main question is, why did it change from 8 - 10 - 12 nominations to only 5 in the first place??

  • YAY!!!!!!!

  • Yes, Pixar is finally going to get a Best Picture nomination

  • Well it certainly appeals to the general public. Popular films that also gain critical acclaim, like "The Dark Knight," would have a greater chance of getting nominated, thus increasing the ratings for the telecast. But these judges are true movie experts and, unlike the general masses, they know how to distinguish between a good film, a great film, and an Oscar-winning film. Therefore, even if we had ten films this past year, I still believe that "Slumdog Millionaire" would have won anyway.

  • I wish they decided about it a year ago. Then "The Dark Knight" for sure would be nominated.

  • very cool!

  • I dont agree with this...this year we had a lot of excelent movies that weren`t nominate for best picture like THE WRESTLER DOUBT etc, but there are years that this doesnt happen, last year in my opinion we didnt have so much good movies like 2009..imagine that 2010 dont have so many good movies like 2009..what we going to do ? nominate 10 of them? dont seem right to me...

  • Wow this i
