Had the awesome pleasure of Elvin showing up at our wedding reception at The Silver Peso Saloon in Larkspur,,, a gentleman and a professional, he gave us his blessing and walked away.... ALWAYS one of my favorites... keep rockin; Elvin, you're still the best in my book...
Yeah boy....High school 1976......My senior year, drivin my dad's new Monte Carlo (like I stole it)! Listening to this jammin on the radio.....one of my girlfriends by my side.....Those were the BEST times!....Really.....
This song is amazing! One of the great melodies ever. This version is the first time they had played together it in a while, and it goes to show that absence makes the heart grow fonder, so to speak. . .
Elvin is great. My band had the fortune to open up for him in the early nineties. Of course he played this one. Poor Elvin lost his son a few years ago. He's still playing. My heart goes out to him.
What a way of meeting people and get to see their talent. At first was reluctant being on youtube, but getting to do this has brought me into the houses of some very special people. You are one of them. Life; isn't it wonderful!
Keep up the good work. Hope You Are Having A Splendid Day!
The guy can still hit the high notes! that is soo cool. I am glad that at least Elvin gets to play the whole lead part, even if you can't hear that well. This is a very good song!

Blue eyed soul at its best ... I haven't heard a white man sing like this since Brother Johnathan at church... Talent holds no color line... I LOVE THIS SONG.... I remember hearing it in my Dad's fiat when I was 5 now I'm 31 and my kids are loving it....
Respond to this video... Elvin wrote this song for my cousin Jenny. They had a beautiful daughter Salena, both Jenny and Salena were brutally murdered almost 10 yrs ago. I love this song because it was written for a wonderful woman. RIP: JENNY and SALENA.
You are so full of shit! Elvin Bishop wrote this song a very long time ago and Mickey Thomas convinced him to put it on Bishop's album as an added track. They had been working on the song on and off for about a year. It's not about any particular girl at all!
@gabeslove2469 Bullshit! It's a song they wrote together in the early Seventies and almost never made it on the album. May want to learn about the song before you start lying about it!
Just Wonderful - I'm so glad that I stumbled on this. Love the song, love Elvin and never realized who recorded the vocal for the original. Elvin often plays this song without vocals and lets the audience sing - I love it like this - to get all the words to the song.
THANK YOU!! This guy's voice is still amazing!! Heard it on the radio today & couldn't wait to look it up! Best video I've found so far! Never heard of Mickey Thomas tho', so I was blown away by the comments below. From FrozenRockRadio, THANK YOU for the excellent post! And where in the world was I during the 70's & 80's? I danced to this song & SARA! Starship was one of my fav's back in the day. Although I preferred them as J. Airplane! But, SARA was their best under Starship. I feel so Duhh!
I just had the honor of seeing Mickey Thomas perform with Starship in my hometown's Spring Fest on June 15, 2010. In, off all places, Monticello, Kentucky. Population, about 6000 people. But I believe the whole town must have turned out, because Starship certainly drew a big crowd. I love Elvin Bishop, and I love Mickey Thomas's vocals!!!!!
I absolutely love the sound of Mickey Thomas........So under appreciated as a singer I think. Not sure that ive heard too many songs of his that i didnt enjoy. Hes a great performer and has an amazing voice.
Still one of the greatest vocal performances of all time, certainly one of the greatest blues numbers ever recorded - I truly love going off on this at karaoke and it takes me to another place entirely without fail.....
@FrozenRockRadio thank you for this!! GREAT vocals and wonderful to hear it again!! I always loved this song, so question please, FRR, why is Mickey the lead when I thought Elvin did it! Who really did it, and why wasn't Mickey given credit? Have to agree with comments below, this guy is definitely not getting the attention or recognition he deserves! Man, what a voice today! And the Blues in that are awesome! TY so very much! I needed that today! :D
what a classic! elvin, the band and mickey sound fantastic! this was the music that made growing up in the 70's awesome! thanks for posting the clip, FRR!
I saw Mickey do this one with Jefferson Starship back 80's in Nashvile. Grace slick and Jack Casady did the backing vocals quite well and Craig Chaquico did Elvin's solo perfectly. It was great. Wish someone had it to put on here.
@VIDEOHEREBOB He has actually had no vocal training. I remember him being asked that question in an interview back in the early '80's and being shocked. He has so much control and power in his voice.
I loved it in 1974, and I still love it today. Mickey Thomas, from Cairo, Georgia, had made quite a name for himself and has made Cairo quite proud! He sang the national anthem at one of our home football games back in 1996 - what an honor to have him!
Mickey has kept his voice in shape and he still sounds about as wonderful as he did in the early 70's unlike a lot of other singers such as Steve Walsh(who sounds horrible) who is nowhere near as he used to sound.. Mickey still has that gift and it's so wonderful to still hear such a wonderful, beautiful voice singing. Thank you for posting this.
Hi! I'm not a big Stevie Wonder kinda guy, buy I MUST agree with you that he sure would be able to do this one justice! This is the album that turned me into an
Elvin Bishop fan, with the version of "My Girl" and "Hey Hey Hey Hey". I just found the Struttin My Stuff CD recently, and MAN it's just as good as it was in the 70's baby!
oh man Mickey Thomas and Elvin Bishop back together again oh wow!! " I fooled around and fell in love". 1976 i remember well..........greatest musical time!! Yes. I love this. great song......Timeless!!
I heard this on the radio today and thought how much todays generation is missing out on all the great music of the 70's and 80's. I knew very little about Elvin Bishop and looked up some info on Wiki tonight.
Never has a guest vocal performance done more to sell someone else's album. Most music fans who bought the album for this song were shocked when they heard Elvin Bishop's voice on the other tracks. Always wondered if Elvin did right by Mickey financially on that score.
Elvin and Mickey have been friends for years. Why would somebody keep coming back to sing a song that is over 30 years old. This was the second time in less than a year that the 2 of them appeared on stage at the Spotlight 29 casino
I'm sure they're still great friends, my only thought was that unlike Europe U.S. singers don't receive royalties from record sales or airplay. It goes only to the songwriter and the publisher. That's why bands like U-2 and R.E.M. divide all music income equally among their members. This song has played in heavy rotation on classic rock radio for over 30 years now. It would be nice to know that Mickey was fairly compensated, even though ASCAP doesn't require it.
