Thanks for a great performance of the song. I'm glad you included the last two verses. Most people leave them out even though they are what the song is all about.
I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!! U HAVE A GREAT VOICE AND I THE UKULELE GOES WITH IT!!!!!!!!!!!! AND I LOVE THIS SONG BETTER WHEN U SONG IT!!!! ur REALLY talented :D
Ken, your videos so great! I love in particular this one and your cover of Dylan's It's All Over Now Baby Blue (you sure do an amazing Dylan cover).
In fact, one of the first ukulele videos I saw was your video review of the Ohana SK-50MG. I ended up buying one as my first ukulele and now I love it dearly, as I would a pet or small child. Since starting playing a few months ago, your videos have been a source of delight and inspiration. Thank you!
This song brings loads of fond memories... I sang this in primary school back when I was 10 or 12 ... but we changed the location names to local landmarks.
Nice job, Ken! I'd forgotten about this song until recently when one of my kids sang it as part of a school program. When we got home I went straight to my uke. You gave me a few ideas on how to mix it up a bit more. Thanks for all the videos, and keep it up!!!
Thanks for including the last 2 original stanzas. EVERYONE leaves those out.
As I was walkin'I saw a sign there And that sign said no tress passin But on the other side it didn't say nothin Now THAT side was made for you and me In the squares of the city In the shadow of the steeple Near the relief office I see my people And some are grumblin and some are wonderin If this land's still made for you and me
The ironic thing to me is that this wasnt initially a "patriotic" song but a song about the depression and thewidening divide between the priveledged and the poor...now everyone leaves out the "unsavory" part ( that is really the most important)
I have his album called Paradise and Lunch. There is some of his material posted to You Tube. I was thinking of ' Jesus Is On the Main LIne' , and looked it up. There is a clip of this from a performance of his in Holland in the 70's. I used to see him from time to time on TV here, and he is an incredible performer who was a back up to people who were not as good as he was.

Fantastic! That ukulele has a bright sound with that pick. I love that song. I'm picking up my lil' pineapple when I finish typing.
jel2003 2 years ago
Thanks. It does look like I'm using a pick, but I'm not. I never use one on the ukulele. It's all done with the nails.

I had to comment again, it is just so fine! have you ever thought of doing Rye Cooder on the uke? I know he was a slide guitarist...but just awesome.
waterdog226 3 years ago
The only thing I know of his is the music to the film Paris, Texas. I have recently thought I might try using a slide on a uke though.
Glad you liked it.

What a lively style of playing! And I like how you pluck out the notes of the solo parts without breaking the strum pattern. Great stuff!
keonepax 3 years ago
I'm used to doing it on the guitar, but I find it's actually harder on the ukulele.
And I don't usually play this loudly.
Thanks
KEN

Lovely dulcimer strum there! It really works well with this tune.
Woody should have played the ukulele. Easier to travel with!

Hello Friend,
This is one of my favorites, and you sure made me happy listening to it. I've been working on my ukulele, and I got one for my husband. We are having a wonderful time learning together...I play duets with you. Neat, isn't it. I will be playing along with you on this one for sure. You are much better, but give me time. Have a beautiful peaceful day. Karen
brokenbluebird 3 years ago
Thank you Karen, you have a great day too. The ukulele is a fantastic instrument, but I can't persuade my wife to learn.
