This song is basically about the Town of Turtle Creek, PA where the Vogues grew up. At one time we were a busy town, with industry and high hopes. Today, all the industry has left and the Section 8 housing has popped up everywhere
@AlbertoGamit Thank you for the bit of history. I knew the Vogues were from Turtle Creek, but didn't realize the song was about that town. How sad.....as a Pennsylvania born girl, I have a love for my home state and the beauty of the land there. Turtle Creek must be very proud of The Vogues -- they have always put out remarkably touching music. :-)
Awesome group and agreed most unheralded. Sad song, in a way. Seeking riches can do that to you. Seek the will of God instead, and he will NEVER disappoint you. Just my comment, so aetheists spare me the 'lecture'
not a mature thing to do. You don't have the guts to confront me instead you drew the line through my name. It's been reported to YouTube and elsewhere.
beautiful song. I lived there when this song was popular. Where is beverly hills, bel-air, holmby hills, malibu, pacifc palisades, toluca lake, chavez ravine (dodger stadium), and the other places that made it magic? I only see the run down parts of town in this video. whatever, the magic is long gone.
How do you improve on perfection. Answer, You can't and this song is just that a perfect encapsulation of a time and place where melody harmony and message combined to make an indelible memory. Thanks for uploading this great tune.
new version out - from the CD entitled "NYC Garage and Blue Lemonade". It's different but catches the beauty the 60's inspired singer wanted to get across.
at 16 I lived in the "magic town". The city was booming. Jobs plentiful, house prices booming, minorities scarce, crime low. These guys (vogues) are only lamenting the biggest longshot in the world- instant stardom!
Good post and these guys had several hits in the 60's that have stayed with me. The best part for me is each time they begin singing "And where's the magic in this magic town..." Great sound. Thanks again for posting. Steve
@spook394 Yes, I saw them in Milwaukee--I never wanted them to stop. Why can't there be songs like this anymore, when you hear their voices and know just who is singing? Music like this will live forever, I wish there were radio stations that would play these-kind of hits. There is just something I can't explain, about the beauty of this song. I keep coming back to hear it. It's the memories too.
To any Brits here, the picture at 1:20, looks more like the street of a British town/city than American. Not a criticism, just an observation. Note the bus stop, car (possibly Ford?) and 19th Century buildings on the right.
I wish Chuck would get the orig. guys back. He goes through members like I change cars. I have seen them many times. Don't get me wrong they are good. Who wants to go see a band and pay money to see only one orig. member. Now I understand there is another Vogues group. This group has the orig. lead singer. Come on Chuck get the guys all back together. Your fans
I cannot stop listening to this song....it is one of my very favorites. I still have the 45 that I found in a dime store back in the 60's...and I still play it ! Wishing someone would make great music like this again....Thank God these guys did...!
This song brings back so many memories from my hometown of Gettysburg-----it just stirs up so many great memories of being young, innocent and how much I loved my parents for giving me such a great life.
Go to their current website which should have a recently recorded cd and that song is on there. It has Bill Burdette and Hugh Guyer on the cd. It is a great song!
Written by the Legendary Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil, I loved this song, & I have the original 45, from Spring of '66.. These guys could really--REALLY sing. Wolfsky9
What awesome memories! This is the true meaning of "music" indeed!!! We clearly had the greatest music of all time back then! Loved the Vogues, the Critters and many, many more!!! Thanks for sharing one of the many great artists!!!
It warms the heart hearing that these guys are still out there performing. Darn shame there is not an oldies radio station that does not stick to a dizzying daily rotation of crocodile rock, doo wah diddy etc.
Seen them in concert last night in Georgetown, Illinois. Their singing and harmonizing is still truly amazing! Bill Berkette was outstanding as lead and Hugh Guyer's voice is still awesome! I got to meet them after the concert and they were all just wonderful people. Go see them if you are a fan, you won't regret it.
this song sung beautifully by the Vogues is about Las Vegas, the magic town were the lights are bright - supposedly. Five O'clock World and You're The One are there other two BIG hits. I also like True Lovers!!!
Music of this quality just doesn't seem to be produced much anymore. Such warm, uplifting melodies & memories. Parents, please show these videos to your children so they know what excellent songs are. THANKS VOGUES!
@mjcamck71 I wouldn't say this is warm, uplighting lyrics or melody. It;'s bittersweet at best with hopeful romanticism at best. Next will be a time like the sixties with so many genres of great music under "pop and rock". Wish you some magic, didn't mean to come down on your just in was curious why you thought this was uplifting.
How beautiful is this! As JDDrummer says, the vocals soar, especially Bill Burkette's lead and Hugh Geyer on that killer tenor after the piano solo. I was feeling rather sad today, thought of the "don't give a hang if I live or die" line and sought the song out. What a tonic! A true 60's pop masterpievce.
My favorite Vogues song of all time. No comparison between them and the Lettermen. The Lettermen were too mellow for me. These guys put out a much more powerful sound.
What a classic. I think I will cover this one but first I've got to get permission to change a few things. Even when you cover you have to do it the way you feel it. But the Vogues - 10 gold stars.
@sssmmitt I'm 99% sure it's Wrigley in Los Angeles. The Vogues are from Pittsburgh, which would make sense to have a picture of Forbes. But Forbes Field had a HIGH left field wall (remember Maz's walk-off HR to end the 1960 Series?). Also, Forbes had a screened, covered pavillion in right field. I have all the old Home Run Derby videos (it was only 1 season) and it looks very much like this picture.
Hi-there is no "old" wrigley field ... it''s the original - the same great park that always has been there!!! Yea CUBS! (And by the way, a GREAT song!!!)
Ooops, I used to think this was a Bacharach-David song, but you're right, I just checked and it is definitely another excellent Mann-Weil tune! I love to learn these things!
I think this is a great song by one of the most underappreciated groups from the 60's. Many great songs for a group that were just singers and very good ones at that. Thanks sodapop for the posting.
1:41 Is that Wrigley Field in Los Angeles? First Home of the American League Los Angeles Angels in 1961 (and previously Pacific Coast League Angels)? And home for the unforgettable Home Run Derby program of 1960?
@okerama - It's a shame that most radio stations restrict themselves to the same four or five-hundred titles and ignore great songs like this one. Just because it didn't perform well on the charts doesn't mean it should be ignored! If a radio station wants to gain listeners, it should have a playlist of at least 1,500 titles! This is especially true if the station is on AM!
I give this 5+ stars! Love their music. Bought their album back in 1968 while stationed at Ft. Lee, VA. Whenever I hear their music it takes me back there.
I know what you mean. It takes me right back to Fort Jackson South Carolina-1966! What a Great Song!! Thanks for your service to our Country and to 74sodapop for posting this Great Song!!
Memories of Philly PA..thought that was the MAGIC TOWN TOO back in the days when this was out in my youth....Still visit my ancestors @ Penn Treaty Park...still looking for my Native Family down there...One Day cause I do Pray ALL OVER THE WORLD TODAY..Our Nations will be RETURNED OUR COUNTRY and be Set FREE BY THE GOVERNMENT& CHRUCHES! AHO!
Thanks so much for posting! Saw them in New Gretna PA...Bill and Hugh were GREAT even at 68 years old! Drove there from Jersey 150 miles...worth every bit of the trip! Do you have "Bonnies Part of Town" ?
The incredible sound of the vogues with Bill Burkette as lead had some of the best harmonizing of any group. They were high school friends in Turtle Creek, Pa.
Can you imagine being the choir teacher with these boys in your class? Once in a lifetime for sure.
I remember - way back in 1966 - when this song was being played on WHOT Radio, Youngstown, Ohio.
I was 12 years old, reading Marvel Comics, watching Secret Agent and The Man from Uncle on t.v., and seeing the debut of the latest Bond film (Thunderball).
I love this song!! It reminds of when me and my friends would run 5 blocks to Lake Michigan in our blue and green plaid sneakers. Nice song back in the summer of 1966. The Vogue were one of my favorite music groups in the 60's.
Not only are the vocals soaring as all original Vogues recording are, but the piano solo really makes it. The solo section is so sparse and the piano really conveys the emptiness and sadness of the lyric and melody. Beautifully done, and a song deserving of more recognition as a true classic. The original Vogues had some of the best harmonies of any vocal group.
@JDDrummer73 : re: the "Piano solo" - YOU got that, too huh? I agree 100%. It really conveys a sense of lonliness ... it's a shame this much skill rarely ever goes into making music of any genre today. Truly sad. This is an amazing gem.
"Magic Town" was written by the Brill Building husband-&-wife team of Barry Mann & Cynthia Weill. There are two Vogues groups now; the one fronted by Chuck Blasko performs in western PA (including Pittsburgh), and the trademark group that includes Bill Burkette and Hughie Geyer tours the country. Their friendships have remained strong - Turtle Creek's favorite musical sons!
A brilliant mix of bitter and romantic. This song really hits me - what lyrics! what voices! The way they soar on "how 'bout the one blinking in my room all night" - omigod, it brings tears!
Beautiful song I remember well it was a top hit in that year in MIami fl...I was in the 10 grade..driving a 1955 Dodge Coronet..thanks for posting it!!
While the styling on those Valiants was debatable, I kinda liked them! I heard those old slant-sixes would "take a lickin' and keep on tickin'". If I didn't have to pay an arm and a leg for some of those old chariots, I wouldn't mind having a few! I also think the mid-to-late 1950s MoPars were good looking, It's too bad that those from '57 on were critically rust-prone.
Lived in Gettysburg and remember this song very well. They had some great songs but this is my favorite. Love the lyrics! Always love the backing vocals....so distinctive. 'Land of Milk and Honey' another obscure song that deserves more recognition. Thanks for posting this song.
@centralparocker : OMG, when I first heard "Land of Milk & Honey" a few years ago (BUY their compilation, folks!) - I was BLOWN AWAY by Hugh Guyer's vocals in the background. Right after they sing "please take me" and he hits "home" - i was like: "WOW!!!" That guy has a set of lungs. Truly one of the greatest tenors I've ever heard. Hands-down!
@RitzyTrailer "Land of Milk and Hoeny" was recorded in 1966. Hugh's vocals were awesome back then. Now 44 years later, Hugh's vocal are still AWESOME! If you get the chance to go see The Vogues in person, you need to go hear them. Hugh and Bill Burkette are touring with the Vogues again and sing Magic Town" that will knock you off you feet. And if you'r lucky, they'' do "Milk and Honey" and you'll hear "truly one of the greatest tenors" you've ever heard.
@RitzyTrailer Yes, "Land of Milk and Honey" is certainly one of those songs that stays with you....too bad you don't hear it on practically any of the allegedly oldies stations around the country....
I have my tickets to see Jay and the americans & The Vogues together in Toledo Ohio at the Stranahan Theater. This great show is Saturday, October 18.
Saw the Vogues last night in Mentor,OH(east of Cleveland). They were part of a 60's DooWop show. I had seen them at Kennywood Park back when I was in high school. This is my favorite of their songs. Two of the 5 were original members last night.
I'm not certain, but I think that the lead singer died a while ago. They really were a fantastic group. What a range of harmony.Does anyone know what happened?
sss-Only 2 tour dates I've found so far are at the Gateway Clipper Oldies Buffet Tour (Boat ride on the 3 rivers, food and concert $43.00 in Pittsburgh on Aug 1st--website "gateway Clipper") and also playing at Mountaineer Racetrack and Casino on Nov 19th $20.00. Website-Mountaineer Gaming Casino- Take Care and have fun-- GO VOGUES---
I've always loved this song and only recently found out that it was by the Vogues...it's SO great to hear it again...I hope that this posting will generate some attention...maybe get it re-released to become the hit that it should have been in the first place...thanks, 74sodapop!

Thanks for posting this! Love the Vogues hits that were from their Co & Ce period.

The incredible sound of the vogues with Bill Burkette as lead had some of the best harmonizing of any group. They were high school friends in Turtle Creek, Pa.
Can you imagine being the choir teacher with these boys in your class? Once in a lifetime for sure.

There is NO free lunch or "magic town".....if it becomes magic, it's because you made it magic.

Great song.
Good memories.
Thank you, Vogues!
And thanks to the poster for posting!

I love this song!! It reminds of when me and my friends would run 5 blocks to Lake Michigan in our blue and green plaid sneakers. Nice song back in the summer of 1966. The Vogue were one of my favorite music groups in the 60's.

Love the song, but I think this is the re-recorded version?
Georgiahulse 3 years ago
Not only are the vocals soaring as all original Vogues recording are, but the piano solo really makes it. The solo section is so sparse and the piano really conveys the emptiness and sadness of the lyric and melody. Beautifully done, and a song deserving of more recognition as a true classic. The original Vogues had some of the best harmonies of any vocal group.
JDDrummer73 3 years ago 18
@JDDrummer73 : re: the "Piano solo" - YOU got that, too huh? I agree 100%. It really conveys a sense of lonliness ... it's a shame this much skill rarely ever goes into making music of any genre today. Truly sad. This is an amazing gem.

Really loved this, back then...thanks for the memories, my friend...
tropicalpancake56 3 years ago 15
"Magic Town" was written by the Brill Building husband-&-wife team of Barry Mann & Cynthia Weill. There are two Vogues groups now; the one fronted by Chuck Blasko performs in western PA (including Pittsburgh), and the trademark group that includes Bill Burkette and Hughie Geyer tours the country. Their friendships have remained strong - Turtle Creek's favorite musical sons!
pgh45rpms 3 years ago 5
Thank you for posting this, great record. Now, someone's got to also have "The Land Of Milk And Honey".

chuck blasco is alive and well and still with the group. not bad for a bunch of ex factory workers from pittsburgh

I was driving a plymouth valiant 1960 with push button transmission.

I love this song!

Hands-down!
RitzyTrailer 1 year ago
@RitzyTrailer "Land of Milk and Hoeny" was recorded in 1966. Hugh's vocals were awesome back then. Now 44 years later, Hugh's vocal are still AWESOME! If you get the chance to go see The Vogues in person, you need to go hear them. Hugh and Bill Burkette are touring with the Vogues again and sing Magic Town" that will knock you off you feet. And if you'r lucky, they'' do "Milk and Honey" and you'll hear "truly one of the greatest tenors" you've ever heard.
260MP69 1 year ago 3
@RitzyTrailer Yes, "Land of Milk and Honey" is certainly one of those songs that stays with you....too bad you don't hear it on practically any of the allegedly oldies stations around the country....

What a range of harmony.Does anyone know what happened?
hiller4 3 years ago
I was completely wrong. I understand that he has signed to play with one other original member. Hard to do if you are dead! Sorry.
