Regarding the comments about age . . . even when rehearing for his later films, Fred would literally wear out dancers who were less than half his age -- and keep going.
He may have seemed easy going, but when it came to his work the man was a perfectionist who was never fully satisfied with his performances. His drive to do his best may be the primary reason so many of us consider him to *be* the best.
I LOVE this scene! Fred Astaire out-dancing a bunch of college kids, to the shock of the older generation. cannot watch this dance without grinning. I'm with leslie caron's character - I would've fallen in love with him...
This is a great fun filled movie. I am going to get it. I love Fred coming to the prom, and I think, but not sure whether Leslie Caron knows he was her benefactor at this point in the movie. Fred and Leslie look like they are having more fun than the rest of the kids. It's great!
This is a truly brilliant scene as the old boy is in there trying to impress one of the young guns girlfriends with a few moves... he doesn't have to try very hard!
Sluefoot! And Leslie Caron remains as beautiful today.
UPDATE: She was recently forced to close her exquisite restaurant on the banks of the Yonne at Villeneuve-sur-Yonne, just north of Burgundy in France. She took several years, painstakingly restoring and converting old dilapidated 17th century stables and she employed hundreds of workers for many years. Alas, constant progressive regulatory reforms and sky-high business taxes maimed it, finally killing off another dream.
For those who didn't know - Michael Jackson and Fred Astaire were "mutual admirers". Here's a quote from an article: "
Jackson, who had a thorough knowledge of the movie musical, revered Fred Astaire. He records in his memoir how thrilled he was when Astaire praised him. The old master even invited him over to his house, where Jackson taught the moonwalk to him and his choreographer Hermes Pan"
That spin between 1:12 and 1:15 is on a dime, fabulous!!!!!!
@sleedolfine15 That's an interesting backstory about is wife passing. You sure wouldn't know from this fabulous performance. Shows you what a professional he truly was. Heartbreaking to hear though.
It's kind of amazing actually. Astaire was in his mid 50s when he made this film and he was grieving. His wife of 20some years had recently died and Astaire was so broken up that he asked that he be allowed to buy his way out of the contract for this picture, but was persuaded that the best thing for his grief was work. Leslie Caron said that between cheerful scenes like this one,Astaire was off alone crying.
@wannabeaskypirate Besides, unlike Jolson who made career out of blackface, Astaire never did another one and anyway Bill Robinson approved of Astaire's performance.
fred astaire always seems to be dancing half speed or three quarter speed, never full tilt. does anyone know of a dance he did which was allout like a charsleston or something very fast u c i have a need 4 speed.
Wow!!!! Don't think for a minute those young guys weren't intimidated by the fabulous footwork of Fred Estaire because they were. The dance step at 0:58 where leslie and Fred end on their knees is just jaw dropping good.
WOW!!! This is one of most fabulous dance sequences with modern tones in cinema from all times, thank you very much for posting it! This is one of my favourite films made by Fred Astaire.
As a child walking home from school, before TV I wouls hear along the way on the neighbors radio the music and the tap dancing Fred Astaire would be doing and hte minute that I'd hear it, I would run home to tune into and try to tap dance to it, I had lots of fun as a wannabe.
This has to be my favourite Astaire film and I love this number. Guess I was born in the wrong decade. Thanks to Digital technology and YouTube - these treasures will not be lost. Thanks for uploading this one.
I love Fred Astaire too but as an African American can do without some of the racist stuff like the blackface scenes he did but other than that he's really tops.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
For how long are you people pushingthe envelope, get over it. There is no room for your whinnying and political correctness, your race has already hoarded music, dancing and sports nd made millions. What the hell do you want,,,There are no apologies due. Drop the sour comments.
I can't believe that people would thumb your comment down and 50bananasful's ignorant comment up; I'm an black fan of Fred Astaire too, but understanding the studio system of the time (and what could have happened to a performer if they didn't obey studio rules) and the fact that Mr. Astaire almost certainly was no racist himself, having worked with black performers since he was young, I believe he should be forgiven.
Plus, DLL was the film that introduced me to him. :)
I love this scene, but I wish someone would post the dream montage of Julie Andre's (Leslie Caron's character, obviously.). There's this sultry scene, within the montage, where she wanders into a smokey barroom, wearing this slinky red dress. She puts a coin into the jukebox, and the sultry, bluesy music ensues. She proceeds to dance in quite an evocative manner. ha ha, Anyway, it's lots of fun! =D
This dance number is among Fred's best, yet it's almost unknown. He was 55 years old when he made this film "Daddy Long Legs." His wife had recently died.
There is another great and hilarious dance in this film wherein he dances as a Texas millionaire. I don't see it here on YouTube as of this date, so you'll have to rent the movie.
I've always loved Fred, and Leslie is so good with him. I never read about how good of a dancer she was with both Fred and Gene she's one of the best that I think both of them danced with.
sloo foot!!!! lol love this film although in general i prefer his earlier films. has any1 gt the entire letter reading montage from daddy long legs? xxx
Ah, oui--but in zee movie, she is Julie Andre, as the actress portraying her is French.
Isn't the original novel wonderful, though? In the public domain and easy to find on the Internet, if you ever want to read it. A feminist story way ahead of its time...
Didja know that the young man (Kelly Brown) who retires to the sidelines near the beginning was the dad of the ballerina in "The Turning Point" (Leslie Browne)?
You go 'Daddy Long Legs,' you just go! Fred and Leslie are just great in this movie! Thanks so much for posting!
