Killer how Mark uses two great songs by The Smiths and The Supremes together. Daniel Merriweather 's vocal is great on this. The versions by The Smiths and The Supremes are the best and always will be. But this one is really good in it's own right. Good music is good music doesn't matter where came from.
good version, but the smiths makes me have an emotion...this one makes me want to dance more...both are good, but the original is the best...as it usually is
WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY BETTER THEN THE SMITHS!!!!!!! THEY CAN TAKE THEIR SHITTY MUSIC AND SUCK IT!!!! MARK DID A BETTER JOB!!!

@marcusraylewis the version of Mark Ronson content lyrics from the song of "the sumpreme" ...the original song "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before" of The smith is written by Morrissey and Marr is not a cover ... : )
@NOSTROMOpuntoCL... The inspiration for the song can from "The Supremes" I am aware that Mark Ronson included there you keep me hanging on in his version. I think he saw the similarity and hence his use of it...
@NOSTROMOpuntoCL I think the inspiration for the Smiths came from "the supremes" and I am also of the opinion that Ronson realised this hence his inclusion of the supremes in his version.
@marcusraylewis the version of Mark Ronson content lyrics from the song of "the sumpreme" ...the original song "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before" of The smith is written by Morrissey and Marr is not a cover ... : )
@megilicious09 I think I understand it. I'm beginning to think people are starting to run out of material to write about. I think the same about current movies, as well. That is just my thoughts though.
I like both versions. Music is music, and they are all great artists. Only dicks argue about who did it better, they both get props. Anyone who says that either one of them sucks knows nothing about music, two different genres, and they both sound good.
@MrTreiAnderson Uhh no it has to do with the knowledge of which songs and which bands to cover and The Smiths is not one of them. Morrissey;s morose lyrics and the up beat music is what pulls their songs off and people can't just expect to cover them and need to make their own music and learn what they can cover and what they can't. Has nothing to do with being a dick.
I will stop you there Mark/Daniel because I have heard this one before, and it was a lot better that time. That's not to say this version isn't good, it's enjoyable and a fresh take but why would I listen to this when I can just listen to the far superior original?
@xxxxSLEVINxxxx i didn't search it you immigrant, it was in the suggestions after i watched the original. get your facts right before insulting people.
The Smiths are my favorite band (maybe only next to the Velvet Underground), but I have to say that this is a pretty fine version. It is an interesting interpretation that adds a lot of energy to the original lyrics. I, myself, always think about how I would cover my favorite songs and what I would do to them. Covering songs is one way an artist praises another artist. I don't see a problem other than the fact that it would make some music snobs angry that people don't know it's the smiths'
The fact so many people didn't know this was a cover, doesn't say anything about the quality of the music, it says a lot about the number of people who haven't heard The Smiths. And it really is not genius to rework a song, if The Smiths reworked a song by Daniel Merriweather, I really doubt as many people would say its genius. It would just sound odd. Genius is a term people just use to worship their favourite artists.
@DanMortham Dunno dude, i agree that the majority of people over use the expressions like "genious", and i wouldn't go that far to describe this song. However, you cant say its easy to do a good cover of an already known song, precicely due to the originals already established fan base. Ronson adds a new twist to songs that just makes them different, even though its a cover i dunno how fair it is to compare definitively which ones "better then the other". Just different strokes for diff folks.
True Genius!! To take a song and strip it down almost only its lyrical backbone and rebuild it and produce a song with the perfection that almost everyone thinks it was an original production... Wow! I knew I heard this song before but because it sounds so well put together it almost makes you doubt your own knowledge.
(Try to sing the original in your head and see how far you get lol!!)
A true example that there is many ways to do one thing.
i remember hearing this version and feeling so very close to it, long before i fell in love with the smiths.. and now i can't help but think it was destiny. is that odd? i often feel like that about music, like there's some meaning behind the songs that i hear at certain times. it would be lovely to think..have you ever played that game? when you turn on the radio and the song that comes up is the answer to your question? silly, but i think of it as a very serendipity-like thing also.
after listened to the joiners telling about the smiths's version (searched for and listened to its) i can realize that the smiths version sounds an old atmosphere that makes remember the generation of 70's. It's not personal, but mark ronson got to make a new song and it's seen very creative and modern. one of the best songs i heard in 2009!
OH.MY.GOD., i never though i was going to say this about a THE SMITHS song but i have admit that this is a great version. NOT THE SMITHS..but it is a fantastic, sticky and contagious cover. well done...
@HazzerHazzerHazzer now now now..be nice. i IDOLIZE THE SMITHS AND WILL FOREVER...i have 4 THE SMITHS tattooes to prove it, but ADMIT IT..it is a very decent version!
Great in their own right. I agree. Ronson's is better orchestrated In my opinion. But it is meant to be different. I loved The Smiths back in the 80's. Still do. What is the point to argueing?? Music is personal taste. We are all different.
@ferry34 hole atmosphere? It's not like people are forcing you to listen to this cover, if you prefer the original then just listen to that instead of dissing Mark Ronson.
To say one version is better than the other isn't correct. Both appeal to different people, and different people have different tastes. Just because you like something, and someone else doesn't, it doesn't make that person wrong. All just a matter of taste.
Catch Mark Ronson at Together NYE: The 10th Anniversary @ Brixton Academy, Friday 31st December 2010. Other headline acts include Annie Mac, Fake Blood, Herve, and Zinc. For more information: together-club(dot)co(dot)uk
am i the only person who prefers this version... yh sure classic song watevr this is 10X better in my opinion its nice and slower the singing is great the instruments suit the kind of song.... good work for smiths making these lyrics and stuff but mark ronson made it perfect
@danielloeyblee No you're not the only person! I, too, prefer this version. People are on here saying Mark is stealing peoples songs and passing them off as his own. He is not stealing anything from anyone. I'm sure he has had full permission to re-work the songs. And it's not as if he's trying to say he is the original artist. He's just putting his own twist on songs he loves. And I think on this track he did a damned good job! :)
It's not totally unreasonable to say that he is passing them off as his own songs, I mean this song is called 'Stop Me' right, whereas the original is 'Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before", not exactly fully acknowledging the Smiths is he.
@eaterHP It IS unreasonable to say he's passing them off as his own songs because he is not! Stop Me is from the album "Version" which is full of cover songs. The fact he called the album Version says it all. They are his versions/interpretations of other peoples songs.
@danielloeyblee chances are you probably heard this version first, people are prone to prefer the first version they hear, it is the same for me, the original just doesn't seem right to me lol
@danielloeyblee How can you even compare this to the smiths original? His voice is nowhere near as good as morrisseys, plus the beat they've added has nothing on one of Jonny Marrs riffs.
@danielloeyblee Nah, Ronson ruined it. Morissey's vocals are as perfect as they come, and Marr's guitar work make the track in my opinion. Still, we'll agree to disagree :-)
I think what you say is too true, it just goes to show how vesatile The Smiths lyrics are? I just love the bass and brass, gives it a whole different feel!
@danielloeyblee no. i prefer this version, although i think the original was great. Thats the goal of a cover version, to respect the original and add a little something to it.
@danielloeyblee NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!! I'm sorry but the smiths version is much better in every single way. Morrisseys voice is " Hair standing up on the back of your neck" good! & Johnny Marrs is simply one of the most talented guitarists in the world....just ask Peter Buck from REM or Noel Gallagher! Respect to Mark Ronson for having Excelent musical taste I'm guessing he must be a smiths fan to have covered this song, it's Quite a good effort but not to be compared with the origional

I like his voice...but I much prefer The Smiths version, period.

This version blows. Totally lacks the emotion Morrissey put in the original version. But so is the curse for the majority of covers.
JeffreeMalloy 1 year ago 7
@JeffreeMalloy you're wrong. ronson took a bad tune, and made it a SONG.

Plan B's version is my fav. One of my Fav recordings. Great song in any version tho.
ekul2281 1 year ago
Great in their own right. I agree. Ronson's is better orchestrated In my opinion. But it is meant to be different. I loved The Smiths back in the 80's. Still do. What is the point to argueing?? Music is personal taste. We are all different.
sofalogic 1 year ago
all of you guys arguing here are stupid, both versions are great in there own right.
dwnboy15 1 year ago
This not even comes close to the original of the Smith. The hole atmosphere and feeling of the song is not present anymore.
ferry34 1 year ago 2
@ferry34 hole atmosphere? It's not like people are forcing you to listen to this cover, if you prefer the original then just listen to that instead of dissing Mark Ronson.

i think i've heard this one before.

To say one version is better than the other isn't correct. Both appeal to different people, and different people have different tastes. Just because you like something, and someone else doesn't, it doesn't make that person wrong. All just a matter of taste.
stupidlinesonface 1 year ago
the original by The Smiths, kicks the living shit out of this dribble. Mark Ronson, go & get yourself an original thought for your head,

am i the only person who prefers this version... yh sure classic song watevr this is 10X better in my opinion its nice and slower the singing is great the instruments suit the kind of song.... good work for smiths making these lyrics and stuff but mark ronson made it perfect
danielloeyblee 1 year ago 79
@danielloeyblee No you're not the only person! I, too, prefer this version. People are on here saying Mark is stealing peoples songs and passing them off as his own. He is not stealing anything from anyone. I'm sure he has had full permission to re-work the songs. And it's not as if he's trying to say he is the original artist. He's just putting his own twist on songs he loves. And I think on this track he did a damned good job! :)
kkly27 1 year ago 8
@kkly27 agreed, i say you can cover sons as much as u like as long as u make it half decent, not just for money
lthornto95 11 months ago
@kkly27
It's not totally unreasonable to say that he is passing them off as his own songs, I mean this song is called 'Stop Me' right, whereas the original is 'Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before", not exactly fully acknowledging the Smiths is he.
eaterHP 11 months ago
@eaterHP It IS unreasonable to say he's passing them off as his own songs because he is not! Stop Me is from the album "Version" which is full of cover songs. The fact he called the album Version says it all. They are his versions/interpretations of other peoples songs.
kkly27 11 months ago
@kkly27
I didn't say it wasn't unreasonable, I just said it wasn't "totally', I just think if you are covering a song you should use the actual name
eaterHP 11 months ago
@eaterHP Well that's the decision of the artist boyo
LackingSaint 11 months ago
@danielloeyblee chances are you probably heard this version first, people are prone to prefer the first version they hear, it is the same for me, the original just doesn't seem right to me lol
Davros90 1 year ago
@danielloeyblee How can you even compare this to the smiths original? His voice is nowhere near as good as morrisseys, plus the beat they've added has nothing on one of Jonny Marrs riffs.

@danielloeyblee Nah, Ronson ruined it. Morissey's vocals are as perfect as they come, and Marr's guitar work make the track in my opinion. Still, we'll agree to disagree :-)

@danielloeyblee
I think what you say is too true, it just goes to show how vesatile The Smiths lyrics are? I just love the bass and brass, gives it a whole different feel!
maldonboy1 1 year ago
@danielloeyblee no. i prefer this version, although i think the original was great. Thats the goal of a cover version, to respect the original and add a little something to it.
gareth19771 1 year ago
@danielloeyblee NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!! I'm sorry but the smiths version is much better in every single way. Morrisseys voice is " Hair standing up on the back of your neck" good! & Johnny Marrs is simply one of the most talented guitarists in the world....just ask Peter Buck from REM or Noel Gallagher! Respect to Mark Ronson for having Excelent musical taste I'm guessing he must be a smiths fan to have covered this song, it's Quite a good effort but not to be compared with the origional

no, you are not. this version is fucking great
