Funny how americans are attracted to constant action and excitement and lack so much taste for real class. This show was so full of it and it only lasted a few seasons. I liked batman and get smart and the monkees and all those other silly shows but this one will always be in my best memories. I liked Peter Gunn even more than the Untouchables. Am I showing my age yet?
I was a serious jazz freak in high school and watched that show religiously. I wore out the soundtrack vinyl, which I got for wholesale at my dad's record/hi-fi shop called The Turntable. Thanks for posting this.
Mancini also hired great West Coast jazz players for all his recordings. That looks like Shorty Rogers on fluglehorn. On the Peter Gunn recordings (now beautifully remastered on CD) you hear Shelly Mann, Pete Condoli, Barney Kessel, and Ted Nash among others. Praise to the great recordings from RCA that still sound good today and were done live in one room.
The cool thing about Peter Gunn was that each episode was a short film noir. If they made a Peter Gunn movie, it would probably end up being about violence, gun fights and explosions. The show was about Peter Gunn trying to find a bad guy and running into one or two quirky characters along the way, and filmed in beautiful and shadowy black & white.
looking back at this show, it was super low budget, but so fun, hip, classy. What fun, I encourage all to rend the DVD's. Loved the character of "mother"
I often wonder if Lola Albright reads these reviews and curious how she feels with all positive feedback she gets? The one reason I bought the complete set of the "Peter Gunn" TV series on DVD was to see Lola's performances. What a talent!
YEARS AGO, WOMEN IN MOVIES HAD FACES. NOWADAYS, THEY ONLY HAVE BODIES - THE SAME BODIES YOU SEE WHEN YOU WALK DOWN TOWN. AND THEY DON'T SEEM TO HAVE GLAMOUR, OR EVEN TALENT, ANY MORE. SOME HAVE, OBVIOUSLY. BUT ONLY SOME. JUNE 26, 2011.
I'm not really into Jazz but this is great music. Always liked this show, it had wonderful background music. This piece sounds like it was recorded in a studio.
Her Columbia album with Mancini, "Dreamsville," was the rage at the University Missouri in 1960. We wore it out. The arrangements were unique, the material unique and she certainly as a singer was unique. I guess what impressed everyone was the album was enormously sexy an enormously tasteful at the same time. As a singer, she was no amateur. We all mourned there never being a followup L.P.
@thousandsmiles1 I enjoyed the jazzy music too. I can remember the show, but I was too young to watch it. I would have preferred cartoons. Thank you for sharing.
annala222: I agree with you on the compliments. However, you might want to look up "pre-record" and "overdub," to learn more about the process of recording these things. This is so much fun to see. I remember when this series first aired!
Just for info: Amazon UK is selling Ms Albright`s cd "Soft Sounds", which compiles two Ms. Albright`s records: "Lola Wants You" and "Dreamsville". The second one contains several "Peter Gunn" songs and has been arranged and conducted by.... Henry Mancini. I bought it and found it great (Dreamsville is fantastic!!!).
Lola Alright was a beautiful and muli-talented actress. I watched "Chapion" last night with Kirk Douglas in it and she was one of the co-stars. She was so beautiful that I had to find out more about her. I am very impressed.
The Talents of Lola are amazing.. She has to perform not as a singer but as an actress at the same time... She doesn't miss a beat from the little glances and jesters to peter gun to performing a beautiful piece of jazz.... I've watched the DVDs of Peter Gun and this was just one of many great pieces of music... It's wonderful Americana and what made us such a great country... Yup real music videos way before the junk MTV is giving us these days...
@annala222 Very good and true commenst. This was a great time in American history. Now days TV, the movies, and the music sucks. Thank God for You Tube so we can go back and enjoy moments like this when Lola sang this beautiful song.
@annala222 ofcourse they always used prerecorded audio tapes, so she wouldn't have had to sing and act at the same time. not to perfection anyway. but she does do a good job i'll agree.
One gets the feeling the song has been carefully selected to be within the limited range of her voice. The allure here surely is not bland melody, plain vanilla sound produced by larynx, it is Lola's unspeakable attractiveness. So lovely turned toward the film-noir light I cannot find words to adequately describe it.
The Retro TV Network has recently began showing reruns of the late 50's half-hour private eye drama "Peter Gunn". Never had a chance to see them before now. As most fans know, Lola Albright played his girlfriend on the show. My gosh, what a hot babe! So sexy, so lovely, so beautiful...and what a charming singing voice! She had a good role about ten years earlier in the movie that made Kirk Douglas a star, "Champion". She's incredibly attractive in it...and just kept more so and more so!
Boy ! Does this bring back memories. Lola was great and the show was so cool the theme is bouncing around in my head as I write this ! Thanks for the post Record Changer.
Wonderful Lola Albright, wonderful Henry Mancini, wonderul Jack Sheldon, Wonderful Blake Edwards, wonderful Peter Gunn!!!
Unfortunetly it seems it's not possible to turn PG's music tracks into a cd. Nobody (like Collector's Music) seems to be interested to turn Ms Albright's CBS LP arranged by Mr Mancini to a cd (it's great!), so I thank that you have put this video in Youtube.
There's a mediocre late 60s film incarnation of Peter Gunn, entitled "Gunn," by that time the show's "cool" was ancient. Also they've tried and failed with a television remake of the series in the 80s, which I've never seen.
Honestly, I wouldn't mind a film remake if it were done in period (i.e. late 50s) with a good director attached--perhaps only a cat like Scorsese can do it justice...?

Fantastic series. Best of the genre. Only one that comes close is the "M Squad" starring Lee Marvin.
