I think he won himself a place at Harvard to study music by whipping out some of his l33t skillZ for the interview. But I read that years ago and his site used to disappear at times.
Don't listen to all these slow vibrato junkies. "shredding" has been around for a while now it is just making it's way to the forefront. Keep up the good work.
hes good but this is the most frantic playing ive possibly ever heard. Give a guitarist great chops, killer speed, a video camera and what seems to be a huge rail of coke and you have whats displayed here in this vid. Damn what happened to holding a note out and letting it sing with some vibrato for more than half of a second! Either way hes pretty good.
@SlylockHolmes this dudes a good player, but he seems more like Joe Satriani or something where they incorporate blues into their playing, but they aren't a straight up blues player like Bonamassa
Yeah that's shred, but it still remains blues shred. He plays mostly blues scales, but he definitely has some nice blues licks built in his shredding.
Hey Bob, you are absolutely incredible dude. This was a gnarly jam, but those other songs with the tapping skills. And you are a true magician with the effects. for once an innovator experimenting and creating something new and original.
i happened to guess you suck at playing guitar and you just wanna make ppl who read ur comment think you do and that you understand in the tech of the guitar...i hate reading comments of youtube
wow ur a complete douchebag. Im looking to buy some new pickups for my strat with the money i get from christmas, and i really like the tone hes getting outta his. and if you hate reading comments why do you comment yourself?
just get some alnico 57s. then run 250k audio pots with a orange drop tone cap. the cap should be a .022 or close, unless you want a more treble tone control go with a .015. more bass tone go with a .10 like mark knofler. also throw a treble bleed in on the volume knob between the wiper and the input lug a .001 ceramic cap.
thanks, i also thought about getting Neovin consealed humbuckers with 500ks, but theres also the option of 1megs (which i have no prior experience with, so idk anything about them)
Get some Colbalt noiseless pups, they can make this sound no prob, if you wanna go the expensive way tho, gt some DGEMG's they run bout 300 bucks for a set of 3, but they are the best actives you'll get, plus you can play some serious metal with em haha, I tried em out and I could get crushing distortion outta this maple necked strat, it was sweet haha!
I sincerely hope you are not serious because i was of course kidding. He has an awesome technique and feel as well. What more do you want? He has a great tone too.
very slash-esque...i like it...you put alot of harrrd emphasis on those vibratos on the blues notes....i was halfway sure you were gonna pop a string or two!
needless to say dude kickass shred...two thumbs up...im jealous haha
This is in my top 3 fav guitar performances of all time, it gets me so pumped. I love how the camera starts to bounce when he gets right into the speedy section. Its very dramatic and I doubt it was intentional. As far as his emotions dropping out, he does say this jam was inspired by a girl who cheated on him...think about starting off a little moody and emotional, finally breaking into anger and frustration. Amazing work Bob Zabek, I had a shot of JD after this one.
I remember first seeing this video about 4/5 years ago when I was 15/16, still obsessed with it to this day!
I understand all you guys saying about feeling and all that, but playing blues, especially improv in general, requires alot of expression, so please tell me how it isn't emotion? lol Plus the guy was going through a break up at the time, so surely the 'speed' and different techniques being used represents his mind being all over place? Obviously who's to know but the player.
i agree with what a lot of people have said here, he loses a bit of the feeling around 2.25 when he breaks out the shred and the tapping and so forth. lost a lot of emotion and it felt a bit like showing off. don't get me wrong tho, i enjoyed the vid from start to finish. great guitar player.
"No, of course, and I am not limiting the blues to any sound, but I am limiting it emotionally, if that makes sense. All I am is saying, is that this, to me, feels like showing off."
It's not classically emotional, but he's definitly putting some soul into it
this guy show he can play people, i play blues, don't shred, but he knows what he is doing, and who ever said there is a certain way to play, cmon folks.
???? you people dont see hes good? what is wrong with you then hes really good. there just making excuses to make him look bad themselvs know what their talking about but hes good and thats that.
Whoever says this isn't blues doesn't understand what blues is. Blues is more of a feeling than a genre, and can be played however the artist wants to play it. It's not the technique, it's the feeling it expresses.
And get over the technique aspect. Always amazes me when people say speed/technique has no feel - as if 16th notes over 90bpm is bad but up to 89bpm it's fine. Or that adding other techniques is not the blues - even when it's to play the EXACT same notes!
These people are just afraid of their own inferiority and try and hide behind such comments.
Having said that, this is NOT the blues and DOES lack any semblance of feel for the blues
The blues is just a form of music - no more magical or mystical than any other. I have seen idiots say that classical music has no feel because it's often written using music theory wheras blues has "feeling".
JohnMayer07 is a fool. Especially what he said about techniques and rules in stone. Blues is feel, as you say, and feel is personal. You can play the same lick standard or with two hand tapping - it's still THE blues.
Your comment about the "feel" is misplaced. Yes, you have to feel the blues but feel aolone does not set it apart.
Phenomenal, the Blues has a certain formula but it is about feeling and emotion, it doesn't have to all sound like B.B. King, I love B.B. King but I love this too, it's mind blowing playing. Nobody told Jimi Hendrix to fucking hold back when he played Blues man. Expression should have no boundaries as long as it works in the context of the Music and this certainly does. Amazing chops and great phrasing.
That wasn't blues. He used a pentatonic scale with a few bluesy notes thrown in the mix, but it certainly wasn't blues. Not to say it wasn't good, mind you.
Yeah, youre a fuckin retard. A few bluesy notes? OMG, i wish i had a cyber hand to slap the dick outta your mouth. I would LOVE to see a video of you doing anything remotely close to Zabek's talent! John Mayer would be ashamed to have you as a fan, but as long as your safe behind your computer, you can talk shit all you want little boy, but you know you cant back it up!
... dumbass. you proved nothing but your ignorace in music. I said that I thought the video was good, but it sure as hell wasn't blues, or at least all the pentatonic tremolo picking wasn't. It had more of a "speed-is-skill" feeling. While the technicality of it was excellent, I didn't really feel the emotion that you find in blues. But really, continue ranting to inflate your pathetic little ego. It's quite amusing.
That tremolo picking is NOT blues. It is showing off. I'm saying it did not have that BB King-like feeling that blues should have. The rules of blues are written in stone, bud.
"the rules of blues are written in stone" . . . I don't think so. My understanding is the whole point of blues is about personal expression. Surely it doesn't matter what techniques are used for this?
Classical is also about expression of feelings. Classical is not blues. Blues is about the feelings, but most people overlook the actual music, and for that, blues IS written in stone. When you make a blues record, people will know it's blues. You can hear it in the music. There are no experimental forms of blues, and no Alt-Blues. It's just the blues.
With a world full of closed minded attitudes, such as yours, it's a wonder anyone has the will to put there music out there and open themselves up to judgment. Not saying you are bad guy cause I don't know you, but you need to think a little harder before you type your nonsense. IT doesn't have to be a 12 bar I---IV-V format to be the blues...
No, of course, and I am not limiting the blues to any sound, but I am limiting it emotionally, if that makes sense. All I am is saying, is that this, to me, feels like showing off. Bob Zabek is one hell of a guitar player, miles ahead of me. But so is Yngwie Malmsteen, and he doesn't play with much soul or clever phrasing either.
While im not much of an Yngwie fan this guy is a totally different case, I understand what you're trying to say however feeling is not defined by speed, their are many different emotions in blues and they cant all be expressed by the same few slow pentatonic licks and long bends. This guy has an amazing capacity for expression within his playing and to be honest i feel sorry for you if you can't see that ... as much as i love players like buddy guy and B.B King, this is just as valid as blues.
the thing is though, this guy has spent hours upon hour, day after day working to become better with his instrument, learning new techniques, new scales, new theory ... he has the right to use these techniques as he sees fit, i could sit and sweep pick over a 3 minute long jazz track if i want but i'd only do that if i felt it, if it helped me express .. this isn't showing off, it's a guy using every bit of skill he's worked damn hard to get.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
To be completely honest I didn't find this impressive at all, just seemed to me like a bunch of notes being played randomly/spontaneously at high speed, there's nothing 'blues' about it. The technique was awful at times, the left hand was so tense and rigid, the vibrato was terrible.
quite why you think he is 'awesome' I don't have the slightest clue.
Pfft, you're clearly just a pretentious noob. Sadly you're already 34 (apparantly) so I guess your chance to grow out of your terrible opinions has passed. Tough shit. Have fun in mexico, lol.
Hmm, what's sad is that you are (apparently...) 23 years of age, yet aren't even mature enough to recognise constructive criticism and respect others opinions, especially of someone as senior to you as I, both in age and guitar playing.
No sir, I think it is you who is the 'pretentious noob', and if you can't post without flaming people then you're also a dickhead.
Have a nice day, I know I will, weathers always nice here in Mexico.
That was super bad! Loved it. Need at least a twenty minute version of it though. The man's a maestro!!! Are there any other versions of this impro? I want more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What i'm saying is that as soon as that backing track comes in, it seems to have lost anything beyond showing off. around 2:25 onwards.
JohnMayer07 3 years ago
the thing is though, this guy has spent hours upon hour, day after day working to become better with his instrument, learning new techniques, new scales, new theory ... he has the right to use these techniques as he sees fit, i could sit and sweep pick over a 3 minute long jazz track if i want but i'd only do that if i felt it, if it helped me express .. this isn't showing off, it's a guy using every bit of skill he's worked damn hard to get.
Tommylp20 3 years ago
I would say when you feel it's appropriate to use all that skill in 32nd note runs over a fast blues backing track, it's showing off.

not blues

To be completely honest I didn't find this impressive at all, just seemed to me like a bunch of notes being played randomly/spontaneously at high speed, there's nothing 'blues' about it. The technique was awful at times, the left hand was so tense and rigid, the vibrato was terrible.
quite why you think he is 'awesome' I don't have the slightest clue.

i found it bluesy. he was great musically and technically...

Pfft, you're clearly just a pretentious noob. Sadly you're already 34 (apparantly) so I guess your chance to grow out of your terrible opinions has passed. Tough shit. Have fun in mexico, lol.
acleansweep 4 years ago
Hmm, what's sad is that you are (apparently...) 23 years of age, yet aren't even mature enough to recognise constructive criticism and respect others opinions, especially of someone as senior to you as I, both in age and guitar playing.
No sir, I think it is you who is the 'pretentious noob', and if you can't post without flaming people then you're also a dickhead.
Have a nice day, I know I will, weathers always nice here in Mexico.
