This song reminds me of very fond years I spent in Sydney and it is a terrific song much like many other Mark S songs. I moved there from Dublin in 1990 with a friend and left in 93 with my wife to be. My kid will probably be sick of hearing the grand-old-day stories that I’ll tell him in years to come…. But that won’t stop me telling them.
The song became very emotional when it was used after the bali bombings and the footage shows some big burly rugby players crying after losing mates in the bombings whilst on their end of season trip. I always tear up when I hear it,
You are like a fine red wine, Mark Seymour. Nothing compares with this version. Bless you, teary guy at 2:34. You managed to hold them in longer than I could.
After my father passed away, I dedicated this song to him, every time my old band & I played. For that reason, alone, it hoplds a very special place in my heart. Love you Dad.XXX
The greatest thing about this song is the spirit in which it was written and credited. APRA credits all members of Hunters and Collectors, not just Mark Seymour, as the owners of the work. So every time Eddie Vedder, or Niel Finn or Mark himself or even you out there in some pub or wedding gig somewhere, play this song, 5 guys who where there when it began get a royalty for their artist expression. Very Australian! :)
To the love of my life, whom I still think of every day. You will always be the one who stole my heart. While I know you will never love me, I will always love you. xx
@74dof.... My story as well !!! Been 18 years, 8 months. But this wound helped me see the world. Traveled, met people, laughed, surfed. Lived the life you see in movies.... But still think about her every day.
just heard this song yesterday and am captivated by the power...like this version much better than his version with H&C or Vedder's this is perfect like this...glad it was on here
This song by Mark brings a tear to my eye every time. Ive listened to all of the covers and this version is by far superior. Don't like Eddie's version, it lacks something.
Australian culture 101 ....... throw your arms around me ......finishes every friday nite This song is traditionally played just before the "ugly" lights come n at the end of the night. from a bouncer .........Woo's the women calms the savage beast ...every time without fail..... Thanks Mark!!
You can get a solo album of Mark's call Daytime and the Dark, which has an acoustic version similar to this, along with other Hunters and Collectors classics.
"I will kiss you in four places" That one line has made this song special for me. Left shoulder, inside my neck on the left side, inside my neck on the right side, right shoulder, 4 kisses I will never forget.
Mark's acoustic version is so much more powerful than the original
Love this song and Hunters and Collectors!!!!!!! One of the most touching songs ever written!! "You will make me call your name and I'll shout it to the blue summer sky!!!"
What a great band - I remember seeing them in '98 at the Coogee Bay Pub with @sandra Jackson. That was a lifetime ago! (can I have those 11 years back now please??)
one of my first songs I ever learned. I never tire of hearing his version. For anyone interested, chords are: E-A, E-B then E-A-B, He does A and B as barre chords (don't be intimated by barre chords, you'll eventually get them). Arpeggiate the chords ( one string at a time ) and put pinky on third string every now and then.
never liked hunters and collectors that much, however, i was at aconference a couple of weeks ago and Mark Seymour was the entertainment for the evening, Bloody fantastic,. i love the acoustic very much, great singing Mark, will see again soon i hope, must be the north east of Victoria country air
Yep....as a PJ fan I first heard this song from them. But I luv it. I have to say that MS sings much stronger than EV in this song...but I like how Ed speeds it up a bit.
Fantastic!!!! The soul and passion flow right through the recording. I have seen several of the Eddie Vedder ones, and he just doesn't have the depth to do this song justice. A friend of mine, Nicki Sbaffoni, has a killer version on here too. Check her out!
I met Mark in Toronto a few years back. I think it was 2005. He was here during music week and what a pleasure it was to see him perform. The guy is humble and grounded. It was a pity not many knew who he was but to see him in a small bar in front of say 200 people was such a treat.... Great memory and a great song writer.
Being from the states Im not familiar with H&C, heard the duet Eddie Vedder did with Mark on this one and he towered over Eddie vocally. I was compelled to hear his version, and was very, very far from disappointed. Im sure you are all proud of this one, and rightfully so. Cheers friends, Thanx for this.
@blywhy2012 wow! what a humble comment from an american, i do not know who you are "blywhy2012" but i love you, thank you for your honesty, i'm sure your country & ours could do with more people like you :)
This is undoubtedly the best song EVER.. the lyrics, the melody, its simplicity... just awesome. Thank you Mark Seymour for sharing your amazing talent with the world.
I was at My sisters 50th B'day Party a few weeks ago. I insisted the (Old) DJ play this song. Numerous times he told me this song was 'Crap'! and that no one ever likes it! I still insisted and I went to his CD's and found it! I am 40 and I had my 22 year old nephew, my 23 year old niece and her 30+ b/f all up with me, arms around each other singing this awesome Aussie song!
One of the absolute classics of OZ music. And i think this is a classic of all the world's music. Paul Kelly, Crowded House, Cold Chisel, Akka Dakka, H&C WPA, The Triififds, The Church. And many, many more OZ bands. Classic bands, i think, in anyone's language. I must say, though, this song. a masterpiece.
Hehe, sorry bout that, mate. Didn't mean to be chauvinistic. (But to be fair to me, Paul Hester was, and Nick Seymour is, Aussie.) But of course, there are a lot of classic Kiwi bands too.
John had introduced me to this song....wow if tears could fill up a pond well mine just did...Love you Mr. O'Donnell from the bottom of my heart...hope one day we shall meet again...god bless you ...
this is one of the most emotional songs i know. i'll love it forever and listened to it again as was searching for songs to play on a wedding video. i think it's more uplifting than for a funeral [but it could have been a favourite song]. mark is the best and the original singer and ofcourse wrote it in the first place so sings it the way it was meant to be sung - with passion that would melt any girl's heart. please don't compare, it's his song and always will be.

I can't be the first to think that the lyrics sound like he's some kind of stalker... "come to you at nighttime....squeeze the life out of you....never meet again....."
My partner just decided he wants this as our wedding music for the first dance, and i didn't even have to hint.....such an awesome song to go with my awesome man
for the last two weeks ive been singing "throooooooooooow your arms, around meeeeeee" without knowing where it was from. once i found this video i realised that i saw it while flicking through tv channels. it has stuck in my subconsciousness for months.
Ummm well I am only here to check the song because I started hearing ..'we may ne-ver meet agai-n etc" that line in my head constantly from 2 days ago. Now I just heard the tail end of it on radio so I came here to identify it....and amazingly to also see your message... Is there a new advertising gimmick out there?
well, this is obviously one of the most recognised songs mark ever wrote.. powerfull yes.. but people who know history also know its only small part of his ''hunters'' period where ofc holy grail also stands out - bottomline mark is one of the greatest ever australian songwriters so try listen to some of his later albums as a solo artist.
too many people that cover this play it toooo fast. I agree with others that have posted, he sings it the best of any and it's evident that he wrote it!!
i am a massive fan of pearl jam and eddie vedder but it must be said as a proud aussie that mark seymour has the ability to make this song touch you deeply. His vocals are simply amazing and you can sense the pain in his voice. unfortunately eddie even when performing at the garden with seymour couldnt match his brilliance in vocals
Im sitter here as an aussie in europe and crying listening to this. Mark seymour is a real aussie guy. I remember listening to Hunters long ago at the St Kilda Palladium.... fantastic!!!!
Great song...Aussies can have Mark Seymour, I'll take Mike Ness...

The lyrics are SO powerful in this song it reigns as the anthem of parting friends and is so little heard in the Northern Hemisphere.
If only it would be picked up on for an advert or movie script it would gain the world wide recognition it deserves

It's interesting to see how different singers change the lyrics.... and the subtleties of meanings it reveals in the lyrics
