  • Just great. Beautiful.

  • hermosa cancion!

  • I can imagine Sinatra singing this - which is by no means an insult. It's absolutely timeless.

  • Why is that hideous creature's face at the top of the page?

  • Ron is amazing and definitely under rated. This song is beautiful and has a way of touching your heart.

  • Il est extraordinaire. A strange a beautiful voice, lyrics right on the spot (I've been a 'secret heart' myself :). Simple and beautiful. Thank you for the post. BTW Canadian singers and songwriters rule (this coming from some french dude from QC ;)>> Go and hear anything from Serena Ryder, for instance.

  • SAM WISE!!!!

  • the video is beautiful....

  • have sat in a coffeehouse in the 90s and been demolished by his talent, as he just.. was there.. for me, ron has always been part of my secret heart.. i know he is is love by so many.. i wish he knew it.

  • Feist's version is great.

  • tears come from my eyes just from hearing the first few bars of this song

  • this guy has a kickass surname

  • the original "why so serious?" quote...

  • Like others here I saw him for first time on BBC songwriters programme a few months back + the documentary on making his latest album . Not a bad track on it and most are wonderful . This guy should be a superstar no question . Going to see him in Glasgow in September . Great stuff .

  • incredible

  • lovely

  • Just watched this guy on 'Songwriters Circle' on BBC iplayer with Fran Healy (from Travis) and Graham Gouldman (from 10cc), from the Bush Hall in London. Just the three of them singing with their guitars, which was really good and which I enjoyed. This is where I heard him singing this song which I think is great and I especially love the honest lyrics in it.

  • i love this guy....he aint ever gonna make it big in the Age of Autotunes and not having an "image" to sell, but this dude can write a good song.

  • da

  • da

  • Ah-ha! I see in this version he sings, "Let HER in." In the Feist version, I thought she was singing, "Little man," but now I see it's "Let 'im (short for him) in" or "let 'em (short for them) in."

Funny, that makes the Feist version sound more like it's about coming out of the closet then admitting you love someone.

  • I just love it!Great song about the hardships we put ourselves thru....

  • secret heart what are you made of what are you, so afraid of could it be, three simple words or the fear of being overheard whats wrong? let her in on your secret heart secret heart why so mysterious why so secret, why so serious maybe your, just acting tough maybe your just, not man enough whats wrong? let her in on your secret heart. the very secret, your trying to conceal, is the very same one, your dying, to reveal, go tell her how you feel secret heart, come out and share it
  • to Cantake9...I agree that Ron Sexsmith is one in a million...Sir Paul McCartney and Elvis Costello called him the best singer-songwriter in the world about 8-10 years, and likely feel the same way today.

However, Dylan's observation that his son Jacob's break came because his mother was a Playboy model is ridiculous. Also, Dylan's choice of wives shows that he's just as superficial as those who choose what music we hear. Bob...your music was good, but your head was never screwed on properly.

  • pop is dead long live artists like this. bored of plastic nobodys singing about nothing, bored of r&b, bored,bored,bored.....we only had pop for 50 years and we killed it..this is a real artist.

    love it.

  • I have only just discovered this guy via the BBC and all i can say is..what a voice!!

I am into Joe Strummer/Clash,etc and have always loathed love songs and the like...but this guy knows how to write songs that dig deep into any mans heart.

Sheer genius and i hope he gets the recognition he deserves one day,but it's a shame that only genuine and the best artists are only appreciated long after they have gone...!

  • @clashpie I agree, saw him on the BBC the other day as well. Now going to see him at the Barbican in April. x

  • the A & R meeting must have been quick:

"great songs... lyrical genius... name of a porn star... he's signed!"

  • Ron Sexsmith proves that talent still breaks through. His music fresh and real; not like he's trying to break rules or play to popularity. Reading all of the positive comments, reminds me of all the people NOT stuck on Top 40 corporate programming.

Bob Dylan commented that nowadays it's almost impossible to just be a singer — one has to be a model and dancer and actor and sex symbol — and how he was glad his son Jacob's mom was a Playboy centerfold so he is handsome enough to get a break.

  • i love this one made me so happy

  • so unique, so original ,so beautiful:)

  • Your just lovely.

  • His sort of subtle, refined songs may get lost a bit in the current era, but that's all the more reason for me to cherish them. A songwriter of the highest caliber.

  • Sounds like a Nick Lowe tune.

  • ah the way he sings "what's wrong?" is just incredible

  • No tienen ustedes ni puta idea. sigan opinando, según mi amiga Elena " es gratis ", si cobraran, no lo lo harían. Y si hubiera policía musical, estarían todos ustedes en la carcel. A tomar por ass toss!!!

  • @robmatlivingstone yea he cant sing.. I think youre the only stupid bitch

  • i was in the car with my grandma and when this song started playing on the radio, i swear, she almost started crying becuase it sounded so beautiful. i love him

  • I'm running though his stuff, and I gotta say, that it strikes me that Ron is the long missing fifth Beatle. I'm buying every CD he's put out tomorrow. I look forward to hearing him again.

  • Man, this guy is so good.

  • TUUBBBEEEESSSSS!!!

  • Great lyric and melody. Genius.

  • Comment removed

  • this man is a genius; his songs are always playing in my mind

  • why is this guy not feted wordwide? instead of the dross peddlers -great voice, musicality, clever lyrics - he has produced magic songs like this, strawberry blonde and god loves everyone.

would love to see the stones cover this or gilbert o'sullivan

  • @tumadoireacht

feist did a great cover of this

  • @tumadoireacht Actually I can just picture Paul McCartney doing a cover of it and at the end saying.."Nice love ballad, sounds like something I would have written" (If it's still kicking around he might even do it on John Lennon's Rickenbacker...the exact same model in fact)

Apparently he got his recognition break at a CBC staff barbeque attended by Elvis Costello and Diana Krall.

  • @tumadoireacht

    Damn son u a poet

  • good song

  • que música linda

  • Recently saw Ron on Costello's Spectacle. Awesome rendition so check it out there.
