  • @lukkbox What a fucking douche you are. Such an ignorant prick

  • @lukkbox get out of here

  • Is there any other kind of fuel that I can use for this

i.e. I have some tiki torch fuel in the shed, would that work?

  • It looks as if the tea light holder is just plain. Is there anything inside to make a jet or direct the flame? Can you just take a tea light and put alcohol in it and light?

  • good constant flame, seperation and its light great stove and awsm video

  • wow, that is a lot more effective then i thought it would be.

  • @mercedesgo1

    Denatured Alcohol.

  • I dont understand how you get a big flame out of the tea light.

normally a tealight have a small flame

did you use any fuel to get a big flame

The idea is great I was thinking about myself

but I was also thinking that it may not work because of the little flame

  • its just a flame? not cool

  • I just tested this myself last night. My tealight cup was unfortunately rather small -- walmart generic tealights. Anyway, it worked better than the mostly-spent Sterno it replaced, but just barely. It burned less than six minutes, but the real problem was the fumes. Poor combustion, I suppose. I didn't want to fire up the "Zen Simplified Stove" for an already-partially warmed can of beans, but next time I will. The fumes from my SLX denatured alcohol with a tealight drove me off!

  • Person A: "Or use a smaller cup, like a 12 ounce mug you could get a boil out of this little T light."

Person B: "That's a simmer; not a rolling boil, some nice bubbling action on the bottom, nice little simmer, now you can.... simmer your rice... your pasta for extended periods of time, slow cook some other items that aren't just a quick boil!!! IT WORKS wonderfulll..."

  • For altitude, body heat water first.

  • I really like this design. It must be fun finding a flat spot to set it on. Do you cook right in your tent?

  • How did you make the foil lid? Also, anyone out there who sees this comment, Please let me know, If you know where I can get, or make a lid for the small pot,Of the Coleman max pot set.

  • Basically, I cut out a round piece of a baking sheet and crimped the edges.

  • I have been unable to bring anything more than 8 oz. of water to boil with this stove. i have been trying with 500 ml of cold water and with room temperature water in my Heineken can pot and cant get either one to boil. any suggestions? should i be using a wind screen in my kitchen?

  • John,

    What's your elevation?

  • Sea Level. but i just did a field test in the mountains at about 3,000 feet and still couldn't get a real boil. it got water really hot and near boiling, but couldnt quite make it all the way to a boil in one run.

  • It could of easily been rubbing alcohol, likely 90% or above. you can also get heet (methanol), which usually works a little better.

  • was the fuel just rubbing alcohol?

  • i dont think rubbing alcohol can produce that much flames

  • its going to be denatured alcohol or possibly heet (methanol)

  • I have used rubbing alcohol in a soda can stove. So I know the flames get at least good enough to boil water.

  • sad they dont burn long enough D:

  • what r u using for fuel?

  • I know that you make the pot stand out of hardware cloth but how many squares tall is is and how many squares around is it? Will the size in the video work with the beer can pot?

  • Well, I make them all different sizes depending on which pot I'm using. This one was 4 squares tall. Anything lower won't focus on the bottom of the pot--the flames will run up the sides and you will lose heat.

  • Jason you are a guru. thanks for all of the info. Can I ask, will a tea light full of meths really boil two cups of water? Have I been wasting my time with pop cans and burner jets?

  • I believe the answers are "Yes" and also "yes" :)

  • Just went 11 days with no electricity in N. Arkansas. Of all my alcohol stoves, the tealight was the most efficient. Holds 2-1/2T of denatured alcohol and burns 14 minutes. Next was the trangia. All the rest wasted too much fuel. Also, when people were mobbing the incoming propane at Wal-Mart, I went directly to the paint department and bought their 3 cans of denatured alcohol. No one was interested in that. Thanks for the tealight video...I would have never known about it.

  • Wow, that's a pretty amazing story! Thanks for sharing.

  • Well, good question. I have reliably been able to boil 2 cups but I have a friend that has never been able to. He always runs out of fuel right before the boil. A lot depends on the pot, conditions, and starting temp of the water. I've used it a lot in fair conditions so maybe that's why it works for me. I think you just have to try it out and see if it works for you. If not, there is a larger 1 oz. tea light that has more capacity. Good luck and let me know what you find!

  • Tea light cups vary in capacity. He may have one of the shorter ones and has assumed they are all one size fits all.

  • I am shopping around for a solo cooking pot that can cook something like ramen noodles, would you recommend the Snow Peak 600? I am looking at the Snow Peak 600 or 700, would you recomend a different pot?

  • The 600 is great but keep in mind it doesn't have a lid so you'll have to make your own. I had the 700 and it's a great pot with a nice lid, but heavier. Either one will cook Ramen just fine. The 900 is too big. If you don't want to make a lid and are willing to put up with a little more weight, I'd go with the 700.

  • thanks, I think I will go with the 700, great videos by the way

  • if we're making home-made stuff here, why don't you just make it out of a tin can? That's what I did, works great. you can easily add a handle using a metal hanger (bucket style).

  • Thats what I am using now, but the last time I cooked with my can it only had about 2-3 inches of liquid in it and the plastic layer on the inside of the can became singed and melted, I don't want that to happen again especially if I am depending on my pot to get me through the hike. I just decided to go for something that I know I can always depend on.

  • plastic layer? I must be using a different kind of can, there's no plastic on mine.

but hey, I'm not downing you on buying a cup. Our economy needs it. Too bad it won't be made in America, probably.

  • btjm83

most American made cans have a layer of plastic on the inside of the can to keep the contents of the can from coming into contact with the aluminium, the only exception is a Heineken mini keg, I don't think i was the plastic layer.

Im almost 100% sure that most cans have the plastic layer, I could be wrong and if I am sorry for the false info

  • you're right. I hadn't noticed before. I went out and burned and sanded it all off this morning, should be clean now.

  • what did you put in the tea light lid

  • Denatured alcohol. Usually I use S-L-X brand from the paint section of Home Depot.

  • It's a bit primitive, but its efficient i think

  • Great videos. Is the tea light stove just an empty tea light holder or is there something more to it?

  • Thanks Jason.

This is now my favorite stove.

  • i made one and tried with ramen. works great!

  • how do you make one?\

  • Great videos. Is the tea light stove just an empty tea light holder or is there something more to it?

  • What did you make the stand out of?

  • what did u use as a fuel

  • I'm 99% sure that the fuel used is methyl alchonol/ denatured alchohol. Make SURE it's denatured, and never use a pertolium product, unless your goal is to make a bomb and loose some fingers among other things. HEAT in a YELLOW bottle (not the other color, only yellow)

is what I usually get, since it's easy to find at hardware stores, gas stations, and auto supply stores.

  • Nope. Believe me, I've tried out almost every possible height and this one is the most efficient (given that you use the right windscreen).

  • oh ok that must be pretty efficient.

  • u should make the stand lower so the flame can expand more and produce more heat and have less chance getting blown around which means your windscreen can be lower.

  • They make 1 oz. tea lights. That might give you the extra capacity you need. I use mine at 10,000 + feet where the boiling point is much lower than at sea level.
