@a68rebel his strength is not proportional with his huge size, in other sports like weight-lifting the guys are much stronger. and it is not 600 pounds in the bench, they catch the weight in the floor and they put it on his shoulders. AND THEY ARE MUCH SMALLER THAN A BODYBUILDER. YOU ARE THE RETARD
@combatesdeboxeo I've only been body building for 2 years and I can bench 450 pounds......so yes pro bodybuilders are plenty strong. When Ferrigno was younger and training in the movie "Pumping Iron" he pushpressed 250 pounds for reps of 10 in a row easily......go watch the movie tard boy.
@a68rebel i watched pumping iron before you was even born. and i tell you again, handling 450 pounds IN THE BENCH is not like to catch the weight on the floor, FUCK TARD
YO Freakno....spit out the marbles for chrisakes! And stop makin little kids cry...40 bucks for an autograph kid or its hulkamania time! Just aint right... And suing yer kid brother and senior Mom for pocket change aint cool either fathead...the buffoon has NO SHAME!
Lou had bad technique, however, he handled the weight with relative ease. I'm not so sure Brian was stronger, rather it seems to me, he was more experience at that particular type of lift. If he was stronger, why was big Lou at the #1 spot in the overall competition?
lou used weight for bodybuilding not world records which is quite obvious.those two gentleman basically jerked their own weight which is no big deal. i weigh 210 and can easily do my weight
Big Louie wasn't so big for this competition. He dropped 50 lbs to just 235 for this competition. Had he been Oldfield's weight like he normally is, he could have easily pressed the weight up. Louie competed in bodybuilding contests between 275 - 280 in those days (300+ in the '90's) absolutely cut. So, at 275 Louie was at his weakest due to dropping so much mass to get in contest shape ... now imagine him at 235! Remember, Louie beat Columbu and Cole in the 1977 WSM car lift at 278 lbs!
I do think I would've given Louie the 260, but I'm shocked a man his size wouldn't be stronger. Lou was an absolute monster in his heyday; he was so wide and thick from front to back, even top bodybuilders say he was like standing next to a refrigerator.
Oddly enough, some sources, probably ghost-written Weider rags, claimed Louie could bench 550. Unless he had a time machine and took one of those triple-ply shirts with him back to the 70s, no way :-)
It would be a rare body builder that can compete with a power athlete in any lift. This video a demonstration of that point. However, that said, good effort Lou!
come on a dynamic two handed press between a shot putter and a body builder. Any elite level shot putter against any body builder it doesn't bear discussion. Not a fair contest. I threw in college and got as heavy as 290 no body builder on the planet could compete IN THAT PARTICULAR LIFT with me or any other thrower. The guys today don't even know how to move dynamically. At least back in the day, body buiders still would do some cleans.
To all of those who said he just did 310, that is what he won at, that wasn't his max. Brian was an amazing athlete, as 70footer said he would destroy people in the shot, even though he wasn't the strongest. He had amazing leg strength though, he was able to dunk a 16 pound shot put, which they said he needed over 900 pounds of force on his legs to do so.
Who is the real winner? Have you seen lou Ferrigno in Hulk 2? He Looks better than ever! But Brian on the otherhand, he walks with 1 sometimes 2 canes. He is hunched over. Not in the best shape! It's all in the training technique.
URAGR8M8 i believe the bench is simply used more they the clean and press was then simply put the clean and press is a more function and more compound lift.I train oldschool i'm a oldschool lifter.all these men are strong for there sport,Lou is bodybuilder and was a success in is art surely dedicated and inspiring to me a many alike
The clean and press has far more technique then bench pressing. Bench pressing is more about strength for that very reason and it uses completely different muscles so there is no point in saying one is better than the other - one shows how strong some muscles are and the other shows how strong other muscles are.
Only people who call the bench overated are people who can't bench big.
well it sort is overrated; the bench press. i mean its not very important in lift in any sport. the jerk , clean snatch, squats and dead lifts are way more important in pretty much in most sports like basketball, football, track and field, wrestling and many other sports. strong legs are very important and the only really sport that a good bench is need is in power lifting and body building. not to say that i m not good bench presser. i get 365 lbs but it is overrated
It was obvious Ferrigno hadn't trained for that style of lifting. Even big Lou couldn't do it on muscle alone. Oldfield had muscle and technique.
I was shocked to see the condition Brian Oldfield is in now. Don't know what happened to him, he's in a wheelchair and it's hard for him to talk, sounds like he's got emphysema. A shadow of the guy you see in this video.
Agreed. Lou was repping 225lbs(possibly 245) on the military press in Pumping Iron for 10x. Surprising that he didn't have it here with the higher weights. His legs weren't under him like Brians were. Natural power vs. bodybuilding
I love Lou, but his technique is awful and I can't beleive they're giving him those lifts!!! He never locks out at the top! In Pumping Iron, he did use 225, then 245, but those were non-locking bodybuilding reps to keep the tension on the muscle. He should have trained with an Olympic Weightlifter to learn the technique.
Even if i get flack from Ferrigno namby pambys, in my view these judges were biased towards Ferrigno. Those overhead lifts are testing core strength as well as delt power. Ferrigno showed poor core strength, could not achieve stability and staggered all over and his nano second lockouts therefore could not reasonably sustained or held, for these preceding reasons. Simply put, the 260 lbs was clearly a problem for him if not invalid, and any lifts after this should not have been allowed.
Don't know how many people remember it, but after Oldfield won with this weight, he went back to do an "exhibition" lift for the crowd with 350, and proceeded to do 5 reps with it!
his is a true thing that happens! its not a chain letter! its kinda scary at first but it really works!! paste this message into 3 comments and press ALT F4 and your crushes name will appear on the screen!!! its soo wierd!

Oldfield wasn't the strongest shot putter and used to make fun of all the other guys with thier 800lb squats and 500lb bench presses, saying, "the shot only weighs 16lbs" then he'd go and throw one about 80 feet and say "throwing is alot more than how much you can bench press" and everyone would be speechless...
Oops that was me ... accidently posted under a friends user that hadn't logged out. Without steroids too. Either way monkeyboy, I mean biker, how much can you lift?
Brian Oldfield had the only clean lift out of any of them. Ferrigno never should have been awarded his lifts there was no lockout and he staggered all over the place.
This was a superstars challenge, not a true Olympic style lifting competition of the days best lifters. Remember, 500 lbs on a bench lift was barley broken in the 80s! (and they had plenty of vitamin S back then!)
