Well, personally, no, I wouldn't really rather have a Somerset. I remember a relative of mine wanting one back in the '80's, though. I think he was fortunate enough that he never actually ended up with one.
I had a Buick Somerset...and it was one of the worst cars I've ever owned - and trust me, that's saying a lot because I drove a Pinto for a couple of years!! O.o
Those were the days. My best friend's mom let us have the Buick for Prom. We felt like superstars! That digital dash was amazing. A while later the computer went out. It was $400 to fix which in 1989 money was like $4,000 today.
I owned a 1985 Buick 2.5 4 cyl fuel inj. auto Somerset with 77,000 org miles. It had the cool electronic dash ! Bought it in 2001 for a grand, and just sold it for 1400.00 a month ago. Great lil car. Had the sticker and it listed for $11,000 dollars new when she was new. The cars ride floated on the highway, smoothest lil car I ever drove.
mileage for a four cyl was not that good ~ + midwest rust ;- (
There was a girl that lived down the street from me when I was younger whose mom had one of these cars. Very nice car, it was fully loaded with the red pillow seats.
Agreed! They were fun to watch, they highlighted features of the cars and told you something about them, and actually reminded people a car can and should be far more than merely a transportation appliance.
i bought an 86 somerset in '07 with 72,231 miles on it for $300.00 . its got the 2.5 with an auto and it gets 26-28 mpg. never had any problems with the digital dash, some rust on the bottom of the doors and around the rear wheel wells. its now got 114,743 on the odo and it runs and drives every day. replaced radiator and heater core. most expensive things yet. i pushed a car home 8 miles rater than waiting for AAA. what a die hard gm clunker but it RUNS and runs and runs.
I just got a 86 Buick Somerset with 102 XXX Miles and runs great cold ac and everything! Is their any mechanical problem with these cars? what should i take car of most on it?
My very first car was a 1986 Skylark, which was the 4 door version of the Somerset. It was so cool, it felt like driving a spaceship. I loved those digital dashboards, I thought that was the wave of the future, but instead cars went back to boring analog dashboards.
@IBMowner1 The new Honda Civic does have like a partial digital dash. Even so I don't think it's as cool looking as the digital dashboards from the 80's/early 90's.
My dad bought a Buick Sumerset brand new back in 1985. It was dark red and it had the 2.5 iron duke motor. He took pretty good care of it. By 1990 the car was starting to fall apart. The digital dashboard would flicker and the engine was not reliable. It only had 50000 miles on it! Since then for a daily driver, Honda is the way to go.

@hitman2070 I wish they'd bring back digital dashboards. That would be fantastic!
