@arglwyddanfradwrus believe it or not, i think i've found the answer already, thanks to ACE sample-source website WhoSampled. they reckon it's Hall & Oates' 1983 song "Maneater" (don't seem to be able to post a YouTube link, alas) and indeed it does sound like a re-play of the vocal melody/saxophone line from that.
