Too bad it has to have Johnny Depp in it. Good actor but he's been in so many of Tim Burton's movies that his presence is starting to give these films a cookie-cutter, zero-suspension-of-disbelief feeling, which is the last thing a fantasy adaptation needs.
I know everyone's freaking out about this, but if you look at the original Nutcracker story it's pretty dark and has a few of the usual Burton themes (there's a mouse king with seven heads and there's a world of mechanical toys and candy monsters. And the guy who's turned into the Nutcracker? He tried to rescue a princess from a curse and once she was free we find out she's a shallow petty bitch who refuses to rescue/marry the Nutcracker). Who knows, maybe he'll do something cool with it.
