I lived in St. Pete in the late 40s as a kid. I remember watching the pool being built there. The passenger train came to downtown in the middle of the street, not far from the hotel. The best stores were Maas Brothers and Webb City.
the vinoy is actually a 'sister' hotel to the don cesar. i must say i 'm very happy to have participated in saving the vinoy. i have tons of photos that i wish i could put on here as it was inside before the restoration. to bad the soreno, which was close to the vinoy, was not saved, too. i still miss the old pier. an upside down pyramid was not my first choice.
Hello Foxolita ... Congrats to your contribution to save the Vinoy! ... How about you use a program like 'Movie Maker' to put your photos into a slide show, maybe even with a nice background music? ... It's rather easy to scan or even take pictures of old photos with a digital camera ... I am sure I am not the only one who would love to see your treasures! ... Cheers, Julia from Orlando
I remember when the vinoy was derelict, it was FULL of bums, whinos and the homeless. I was born and raised here (1964) and have seen alot of changes. Thankfully the city is coming back. The thugs and wanna be gansta's must be eradicated. They have caused the close Baywalk. I tried to take my son there to see Transformers. We had to leave 10 minutes into the movie because the audience (80% black teenage thugs) made it un-watchable with their licentious behaver.
@dave98503 Sir,,,,this film is mis dated, it is the roaring 1920's and My father lived through the depression and it was very bad...its neither Liberal or Conservative . It was what it was...I am a republican and Historcially the 30's were a nightmare.
Fashion wise this looks 1920's instead of the 1930's

Wow, they've kept this hotel historically accurate. I was just there about a month ago and it doesn't look like it changed much.

It is quite a gorgeous hotel. I hear they have a spectacular brunch on Sundays, but it costs $50 a person.

The idea of people being poor in
the 1930s is over exaggerated. There
were still a lot of rich people living
during that time. The liberal historians
like to distort this fact.
