  • 3:45 Wilhelm Scream

  • @LemonCurdAddict1234 Nope, the film where the WS comes from was made in the 50's, this is from the late '40s.

  • I agree Why is this racist?

  • WHATCHU TALKIN ABOUT UNCLE MA FUCKING RAMUS? WHY DONT U GO BE EATING UR FRIEND CHICKEN AND WATER MELON

  • Why is this racist? Can someone explain it to me? I just don't see how a wonderful tale of reverse psychology can be.

  • We have the original 1946 classic, "Song of the South" on dvd including interview with Walt Disney on the creation of the movie. Only at Acme Sales and Books here in beautiful Savannah Georgia

  • flobots brought me here =)

  • Wow this brings me back!

  • 2:59

    BRIAH PATCH!

  • you know this is technically a furry latex fetish piece. XD

  • I hate that this isn't on blu ray.

  • Eddie Murphy sure sounds like the fox in this

  • at 4:32 brer foxs face is so funny!

  • .....and film critic Roger Ebert---who wrote the screenplay for "Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls"---SUPPORTS the decision not to release this on home video.

  • born and bred in a briar patch *whistles* born and bred in a briar patch *whistles*

  • There should've been a separate cartoon about Br'er Fox and Br'er Bear.

  • THIS is what people call racist? You gotta be kidding me!

You want an offensive film? Watch NORTH! That film was so offensive, it's not even funny, and yet IT can still be released?!

  • Bre'r Fox outfoxed by a rabbit with reverse psychology! Such a wonderful Disney classic, a product of the times that should never be forgotten.

  • @cancanwench Absolutely! If this was done today, Brer Rabbit would've escaped by either beating Brer Fox in a fight or some sort of contrived comedic way. This was not only very smart but funny! I hope this will never be forgotten.

  • 3:02 ! enough said

  • This movie is a classic piece of Americana! Uncle Remus was not a slave in this movie, he roamed freely wherever he wanted. We have the original "Song of the South" on dvd with an interview of Walt Disney on the creation of the movie. Only at ACME sales and books in beautiful Savannah,Ga (912) 352-2203

  • How is it racist if there are no negative African-American stereotypes? Brer Rabbit is the story's hero...he's clever, funny, almost brilliant, in fact. Uncle Remus is the human protagonist. Even Brer Fox and Brer Bear have a certain charm. There are no demeaning, stupid black characters like "Prissy" from Gone With the Wind, or white people acting condescending or controlling of them. There is also no definitive determination of which cartoon character is or is not "black."

  • @ephraimmorrison People are bitching about the situations of the characters and the way they talk. That's what they think is racist. I say this was just a product of the times, and is more of a tribute to the rich culture within the plantation era.

Personally, I've never seen the whole thing, just bits and pieces....'oh plllleeeeaaaasssse don't fling me in that briar patch!'

  • @cancanwench Except it isn't a tribute to the rich culture, not as it relates to the people it poorly portrays. The racist part comes from the the way African Americans are portrayed as buffoons, which at the time was common in cinema. The fact that it's done in a children's cartoon is worse, because children are the most impressionable and their perceptions of race are the most affected by things like this. It IS racist in that regard

  • Whenever Brer Rabbit comes back up from the briar patch, it sounds like he yelled "YO MOTHER FUCKER".

  • Everyone has a GREAT laugh in this

  • God I love that part;

Br'er Fox: I 'spect I'll have to skin ya.

    Br'er Rabbit: :D Yeah, sure that's...was that? O-O

  • Who cares of it is racist? Anyone have a plan to fix the past? Someone going to rewrite history? No? Then enjoy the humor of Disney

  • Here's an idea, Disney: Cut out the live-action parts of the movie and release the Brer Rabbit stories in another movie that people won't find offensive.

  • Jimmy Baskett played Uncle Remus. He also worked with Bo-Jangles in movies.

Disney hired him on the spot at an audition when he heard Beskett's voice. From then on it was history. Baskett passed away in 1948 from a heart attack.

  • I understand why people think this content is a racist... How is it though? The actor agreed to do it. I love it , great memories, however people precieve is their business.

  • 4:32 I dont know what he's been smokin, but I gotta get me soma dat!

  • Barry White as the bear, I can't help but laugh at it.

  • @Ansem420 xD LOL!! That was a funny comment!

  • Barry White as the bear, I can't help but laugh at it.

  • Anyone know where to look for Johnny to play brer rabbit's trick on the brothers?

  • xD I understand why most people believe this film is racist, but this is NOT as bad as "Gone with the Wind". That was actually worse--yet they released GWTW in an UNEDITED format on EVERY home video release! Disney needs to reconsider putting this on DVD. I think it would be good if a disclaimer warning viewers of the potentially offensive content appeared at the beginning. What do you guys think of that? Thumbs up if you agree.

  • my dad used to read these stories to me and my brothers when we were kids, he did the voices and everything. great memories

  • Comment removed

  • @puppiesare2cute7 uh, gross

  • xD Sometimes I can't keep up with Br'er Fox's speech. I heard it was difficult to animate him like that; sometimes his voice was not in synch with the movements of his mouth.

  • 3:04 "Briar Patch" XD

That would be an epic ring tone.

  • 3:04 BRIAR PATCH.

    instructions:

play over and over again for inexhaustible enjoyment.

  • "...and brer fox, he laid low!" AAHhahahAHAHAH! the ending :)

  • This is hilarious! "Yessir, Br'er Fox! I was born and bred in the briar patch!"

  • Anyone know where I can find a torrent for this movie? Been looking to download this movie for quite awhile, and I'm too poor to buy a copy.

  • I have read the first Uncle Remus book by Joel Chandler Harris. It's called Uncle Remus: His Songs and His Sayings. I read it in Kindergarten for fun.

Now I'm reflecting on it lately. The original stories have a lot of disturbing shit in them. At least Disney did a good job of sugarcoating it :)

Fact: Brer Fox had a son named Tobe (Imagine that) Cute kid, and WAY nicer than his dad. I think he had a daughter in there, too.

I want to read the other Uncle Remus books, too. I like SotS :)

  • "I'm gonna knock his head clean off!" XD

  • Br'er Fox: I spects I'll hafta SKIN ya!

Br'er Rabbit: Yeah, sure, that's... Wuzzat?! xD

  • Brer Bear could eat BOTH rabbit and fox if he knew he could, couldn't he?

  • Br'er Fox looks so cute at 4:13. I love him!!!

  • lol, Brer Fox sounds just like Eddie Murphy is voicing him. This is some seriously funny stuff right here! GROW SOME BALLS DISNEY AND RELEASE THIS SHIT ON DVD!

  • I can see why brer Bear wants to "knock his head clean off." In the story "Who ate the butter?" I believe Brer Rabbit tricks Brer Bear into eating someone eles' butter. I guess he's still bitter about it. Google it. I'm learning these stories in my American Lit. II class.

  • "briar patch..?? BRIAR PATCH!" xD

  • Ahahaha BRIAR PATCH!! @ 3:06

  • Br'er Rabbit looked and sounded so funny when he was begging Br'er Fox not to toss him in the briar patch. XD

  • "I 'spect's I'll haveta SKIN YA!"

"Skin me? Oh, yeah, sure, that's....Whazzat?" XD Best part! This is hilarious!

  • You know, Brer Fox could have been set for life if he'd just taken up a living in Olypic discus throwing or shot put.

  • I was born and bred in a briar patch!!!! lmfao!!!

MOIDER!!! XD best bit of the film :)

  • Does anyone notice that Brer Fox sounds like Eddie Murphy?

Gee, I guess James Baskett was psychic....

    I love Brer Fox!

  • @animefoxify I'd give anything to hear Eddie Murphy get involved in one of THESE Brer Rabbit Stories

  • I love how they take their hats off to him even though they just 'killed' him....lol.

  • @xxr3m7xx They were paying respect for what they thought was dead.

  • @SameInari I know, but it just seems strange since they killed him. I mean, if they neglect the 'no killing' courtesy, I would imagine they'd neglect the 'hats off' one too.

  • @xxr3m7xx They are being sacastic about the respect though.

  • Some of the finest animation and story telling ever made... why the hell is this not available on dvd? How is this racist or controversial? This is what Disney used to be. Now all their movies are written by focus groups.

  • @Cheetahcabra That's why I'm sticking to the older Classic Disney films, with the exception of "the Princess and the Frog." I liked that because it put a new spin on a classic fairy tale. I could be wrong, but I thought that was written in the old style.

"P-p--p-plllllleeeeeaaaasssse don't fling me in dat br'er patch!" I pity the kids who don't remember hearing that story. I remembered it, but couldn't remember what it was from. Our memories get stunted because of this controversial bullshit!

  • There is nothing racist about this. I can understand how people don't like the term "tar baby" ...but it actually does mean "Being in a difficult situation" and Uncle Remus is the one who made it up. Anyone who is saying they're offended by this need to grow up.

These tales come from black people and are a part of black culture in times past. To silence this film, would be to silence a part of black culture and brilliant story telling.

  • Yeah, featuring a black doing a minstrel role directly supporting the arguemnts for slavery & discrimination.

His lyrics come from a version of "Zip Coon" blackface song; blacface calls whites superior.

He says that the south after Civil War is just fine - so where's the kkk, the thousands of hangings, the re-instutted slavery of blacks under prison labour?

If you think that the "Lost Cause" mythology created by Confederate soldiers (repeated here) is black culture, ur deeply indoctrinated.

  • @brainiacbelle Indeed, Amen. Bring back the Song of the South! It's not racist, it's simply heiritage and culture!

  • briar patch?

    DUNNN DUNNNN

    DUNNNNN DUNNNNNNNNN

    BRIAR PATCH!!!

    classic

  • I always laugh at; then Brer Fox takes the credit for thinking of the aforementioned briar patch :)

  • lol ~ 3:05

  • @Cookiecustard like how?

  • No. To be stuck in the tarbaby is to be stuck in a bad situation out of which there seems to be no way of extricationg oneself. I.e. the American presence in Iraq. We are certainly 'stuck in the tar baby' there. I have never seen it or used it in any racist context. You are being ridiculous.

  • Honestly. Are you retarded? Have you ever heard anyone refer to a bad situation as a tar baby? No, you haven't. The reference is used to express hate towards people. You can stop replying to me now. If you're that insensitive to the pain of others, I don't want to talk to you.

  • Oh how silly.

  • If you find it silly, stop replying like I asked you to two days ago.

  • or your both silly and a tar baby is actually a baby made of tar invented by brer fox to caputre brer rabbit in a story by uncle remus?

  • Oh my gosh Brer Fox's laugh at 3.18 is the freakiest thing and his face at 2.31 is really scary. I love Brer Rabbit! He's the greatest! Brer

  • I love it when brer fox says BRIAR PATCH!!

  • ive actually never heard of song of the south until i went on splash mountain in disnry land anaheim, calofornia

  • Br'er Rabbit was the voice is Johnny Lee, otherwise know as Algonquin J. Calhoon. He was a great entertainer and barely remembered. The NAACP robbed this great man of mortality.

The Song of the South is great American art. The NAACP was oversensitive and they should apologize.

  • I believe you mean they robbed him of immortality.

  • Quite so, but what do you think of the statement? Johnny Lee was great and very few people ever heard of him.

  • thank you for posting this :)

  • even though brer bear is slow in his speech, he gets serious when he yells NOW HOLD UP!

  • brer fox and brer bear rule

  • i wonder how long disney will try and hide this under their hat. splash mountain is one of most memerable rides at disneyland, and to think no kone hardly remembers.

  • I'm glad this is here. I've never seen all of Song of the South, but this is great. This has got to be probably the best animation in Disney history!

  • i loike the rabbit he was so cute

  • Great movie!

I got my Song of the South DVD from waltdisneydvds . com. It is amazing!

  • Sorry TennesseeShine but any serious study of Harris' naratives examines the lost cause ideology that made them popular to begin with. The White population of that time created a new history of slavery, a fantasy where the slave was treated as part of the family and was happy. They believed there was an intimacy within the hierarchy of slavery. Today we know slaves were not treated well and in fact were not happy at all with slavery. Would you be?

  • Well no one would choose to be a slave, but some were treated better than others. There were slaves who were close to the families they stayed with, historical records show that. I'm not saying that slaves being close to their family makes slavery "ok" but not every white person who owned slaves was an a**hole who beat their slaves senseless every hour.

It wasn't common, but it happened.

  • @EFForeva Harris created a fantasy that never existed before, during, or after slavery in order to sell books to southerners eager to remember slavery as the "good ol' days when the negro knew their place and were happy to serve." EFForeva if you are not illiterate (which I imagine you are) you desperately need to read a history book.

  • I favorite part of the movie will always be the cartoons.

  • I love this film. I can't believe people see it as racist!

  • All the stories people see as racist (Like this one) from the film are actually traditional African American folktales.

  • Brer' Rabbit is the personification of the supposedly powerless black slave constantly getting the best of and making a fool out of his "strong" white Massa as exempified by Brer' Fox and Brer Bear. Any serious study of Joel Chandler Harris' Uncle Remus tales collected directly from old former slaves makes that fact crystal clear.

  • Funny thing is that you can still find VHS copies of little rascals or even catch it on TV now and then, and it was very racist. I just don't get how an old man telling kids that they should use their head to stay out of trouble could really be seen as racist

  • Brer Fox and Uncle Remus both light matches the same way (and are played by the same actor). XD

  • I aint never seen this, sho nuf not! thanks a bundle, yes sir!

  • BRIAHPATCH!!!!

  • "BRIAR PATCH!" LOL

  • "I'm gonna knock his head clean off!"

  • this ppor movie was band for i dont no what but theres a rrid of it in disney its splash mountain

  • Aw! :) I love this film so much and I havent seen it in years! I'm hunting for it on DVD now.

Your a star for posting this! Thank you so much :)

    xxxx

  • it will be censored mind u, and edited etc... maybe not even exists any more

  • Yeah it probably will be, which is a shame because it's a good film just the way it is.

  • If you live in the US, you'll have to get it overseas. It's only released in Europe. If you do that, you'll have to get a universal DVD player

  • @Dragonrider1227 - Actually, all copies of "Song of the South" were internationally recalled in 2001.

  • @Cooltomorrowkid

    o_O Seriously?

  • @Cooltomorrowkid internationally recalled for what?

  • @hemanshera777 - The controversy that was attacking it at the time, and still is preventing its release.
