  • WOW! This guy is more than a professional. He is the epitome of talented on the tenor sax, and I really wish I could play the sax half as well as Mr. Sonny Rollins.

  • The great thing about jazz is, You can never say something like "wow It's is better than the original"..

  • awsome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Black Santa Claus on sax!

  • Rollins is da man!!! Gotta say I liked his sound better when he played a Link STM though. Too honky for my tastes now.

  • Just an old pro in every sense of the word! What genius!

  • Man. How cool is Sonny Rollins. I get chills when this fucker plays. Hot!!

  • It's hard to use the word 'soul' these days without it sounding cliche, but as I watch this video, I'm struggling to find any other term that accurately describes Sonny's playing. He's part of the instrument, part of the sound, and he moves to the beat. This man doesn't just play Jazz, it's inside of him and he feels the music. Purely soulful, long live Sonny Rollins!

  • I hope I'm that funky by the time I reach that age.

  • que buena musica. saludos a todos quienes comparten este género

  • Wonderful!!!

  • Ya. You can just feel the momentum.

  • who couldve disliked this???!!!!

  • Thanks for great video performance. Mira

  • The man is awesome, no other word for it.

  • @sewitt60 Exactly!

  • Fabulous!

Fortunately I was there - Antibes, Juan-les-Pins, France.

  • Amazing.

  • @mrmasternik prolly misspelled the name thingy, but Chris Potter is pretty amazing

  • @szaboi86 What is your favorite style?

  • @szaboi86 In other words you can't play it?

  • Happy 81st Sonny! You're the grandfather I wish I had.

  • @SaXDuDe17 Good point. I feel the same way.

  • @SaXDuDe17 My grandfather is pretty epic, but touche!

  • Oh my fucking god ... i would ve loved to smoke some weed and be there ...

oh no i have to correct myself ......

i would ve loved to smoke A LOT of weed and be there :D

  • @Audi0Phil Me too. Let's meet up in Amsterdam!

  • i'm a bit lost in old jazz, can anyone direct me towards a good modern jazz musician? thanks

  • @szaboi86 Thanks so much for your thoughtful, insightful comments.

  • One of my favorites of all time!!!

  • One Word : AMAZIN !!

  • WOW one of the greats still blowing

  • People who listen to this and mark "dislike" have the freedom to do so. It is a free country, and music lovers come in all age groups and taste. Just be respectful with your comments is what I suggest. I for one loved the song, modern music owes a lot to Jazz, and I think they have forgotten this. When you take the arts out of school what do you expect.

  • @cjfl1962 yeah man, word.

  • Sonny Rollins is off the chain and brings insane rain of awesomeness.

  • I don't see people on pop videos commenting that "32 people like Charlie Parker" or something like that. 1) Who cares if someone doesn't like the same song as you? 2) There's more arrogant assholes commenting on these great jazz videos then on more modern music. Grow the hell up.

  • Brilliant!!!Extremely nice!!!! Thanks my friend Bret!!!

  • @TheSaxophonGuy Did you know some bore flagged you post as Spam? I'm not a fan of Usher (or any middle-of-the-road commercial pop for that matter) but that's some VERY nice sax from someone so young. Keep up the great work.

  • @matthk thaank you so much :) make sure to subscribe ( i will play stuff like Adderley too..)

  • Are you a wizard? (_;_) C(_;_)

  • he's so animate when he plays!! great performance

  • Great gitarr player!!! youtube.com/watch?v=L-Ewz0NKOQQ&feature=relmfu

  • Hero jazz

  • This guy is beast...

  • This is music that comes from a man whos truly down to earth.

  • Kernel Sanders plays good Saxophone

  • @turts02 This was pretty funny, but you screwed it up by showing you spell as poorly as a six year old.

It's 'Colonel' Sanders, not 'Kernel'. I could forgive you if you were American, as those poor buggers have the lousiest education in the western world, but you're Australian, so you should know better my friend, much better.

  • @matthk elitist douchebags like yourself cause more dischord in the world than even the stupidest Americans. It doesn't matter whether someone is intelligent or not, it's content of character that matters, and the way you present yourself shows me that the world could do without your character or your "intellect". Furthermore, America has produced more for the world than you ever will, take your idiocy to another forum more suiting to your distasteful personality, I recommend /b/.

  • @abjafriggitywhoo What a self-righteous, pointless tirade.

'Elitist'? For pointing out a spelling error? Jayzus.

If you feel correct spelling is the realm of 'elitists' then I'm sorry for you. But in Australia, spelling IS important.

I didn't remark on anyone's intelligence, nor my own intellect, but you, bitterly and aggressively, did. The poor educational standards in the USA are well documented, and I didn't attack the intelligence of Americans, as they're the poor victims of this travesty.

  • @matthk aaahhh these pompous faultfinders! how we love´em. the world´s in bad need of people like that. schoolteachers, rulepreachers, always a sharp eye on somebody´s possible flaws, always ready to criticise, EXCUSE ME, critisize. while writing this good ole MATHK (from mathematics?) missed the one wrong quarter note that happened to poor mr. Rollins at 0.58..... (listen again & e-mail it to Sonny) hurry up, he´s getting old..... keep keeping an eye on us, we´re happy to have you around...

  • @abjafriggitywhoo PS: What's /b/ ?

  • @matthk Oh, you're not talking about 4chan's random board are you? I thought that shit-hole site died years ago.

  • @abjafriggitywhoo absolutely right, wright, rite? mr. wise guy got me all confused with his punishing finger pointing at me that i got too anxious not to make any bloody mistakes. see my comment to what he had to say if you like. TRAVESTY ! ! wot a big word, then again not big enough really to emphasize the importance of our cherished teachers words- too big simply 4 regular folks like me. lets all hope & pray the day will never come when we will have to do without the assistance of MR. wot???

  • This man... is my hero...

  • Sonny Rollins one of the high priests of Jazz, his live vibes is beyond consciousness. Authorized to perform the religious rites of Jazz, his Phantom appearance haunts the living, he's the living Jazz Holy ghost of those past The Holyman The divine, The Rabbi of Jazz .JAZZ one of the great religions of Music +consciousness

  • O cara 'e uma maquina de tocar sax !!! Fui no show dele no Umbria jazz e foi divino!

  • 33 people disliked this video? I hope the jazz police have 33 prison cells.

  • ppl who dislike this r deaf and horny for sonny

  • Any tips for a sax player who just gout out of a concert band?

  • 32 people got the elephant dick in their asses

    fucking dumbass people

  • Dieu existe. Il s'appelle Sonny Rollins !!!!

  • How can 32 people dislike this - HIS TONE AND IMPROV. ARE SO OF THE SCALE

  • this guy knows definetly how to breathe

  • Comment removed

  • I choked on my drink when an advert for Selena Gomez interrupted this jazz playlist. -_-

  • @JarsofGreed i KNOW CHEAP MUSIC AND SONNY IS REAL MUSIC MAN

  • what 32 people disliked this? go die.

  • @jazzviscosity No need to eliminate those folks. They just have different tastes. Perhaps they are admirers of Lady Gaga?

  • @JazzVideoGuy I guess but I don't go out of my way to dislike horrible pop music! So why would they come over here and stomp on our turf?!?!

  • @jazzviscosity Maybe they got lost.

  • @JazzVideoGuy probably typed in "good music" and ran across this. it should have been a pleasant surprise

  • @JazzVideoGuy

Got lost stompin at the savoy XP

  • @JazzVideoGuy

    THAY DID GET LOST!

  • @JazzVideoGuy i hate retards and faggots such as those bitches.

  • @jazzviscosity

Well wouldn't we be in denial if we believed that everybody liked this music? :P

  • @jazzviscosity True lovers of music accept all genres.

  • @JazzVideoGuy No, they have BAD tastes.

  • @JazzVideoGuy eliminate :D lol.

    you forgot justin bieber.

    gaylord 3000

  • @JazzVideoGuy well i don't much appreciate that! i love lady gaga, but i performed this yesterday in a concert as a part of a violin viola duet. SO THERE

  • @jazzviscosity , not everyone have a mind , an heart and an ear for great music. Just like not everyone can look at a great painting and feel something for it

  • @jazzviscosity probably a bunch of republicans.

  • No Kidding, Have they no Soul? Was honored to see Sonny in Detroit last year and I still have goose-bumps when I think about it.

  • @jazzviscosity Perhaps they navigated the mouse over the wrong button by mistake?

  • In search of jazz brass players on munite.net. Upload your tracks and be heard and listened to on internet radio. Please check it out , all free, forever.

  • I want to meet him in Japan. Please please come again. Next time, I won't miss your performance in Blue Note Tokyo, or Cotton Club in Tokyo!!

  • Whenever I hear Sonny the genius play, and coming my experience as a tenor player myself, I always what is going on in his mind. To come up with all these new ideas whilst referring to the continuity of the head is just unimaginable to me.

  • He is fantastic but lol how does he get such a good sound with his strap down SO low

  • I was there :) He was supposed to play 1h30 and played more than 3H ! Great concert !

  • youtube please stop with the damn commercials.

  • If I don't see him before he passes on, I will be extremely angry with myself.

  • @SupahflyJazzguy Im going to see him at Jazz Fest in New Orleans this year. Only 45 minutes from where I live. :)

  • @meamfood That will be great. Fest is big fun!

  • Some Lester Young-esk lines I'm hearing hear!

  • wow he is swingin so hard that it sounds like hes playing an entire beat behind...wow

  • @ironcross427 That's not what swing means. I feel your sentiment, though. Listen to some Dexter Gordon and hear it darn-near a taxi-cab behind. So cool.

  • this is sooo good...

  • Γργτηδιητβτξδξτη sonny is great in my opinion plus I don't even know what I just typed in greek

  • can't hear shit from that ride all wooshie..

  • What a heart, man....! We love you Sonny!

  • Back in the 80s went to see him every night for a week. Some times rubbish other nights genius. That's jazz. His message was clear, go for it fresh whatever. One of the greatest living impros of his generation .As for nowadays well things have moved right, including his old sound to now,but a big but, for his age etc brilliant. Sonny, Traine taught me everything, and they pushed the boundaries, whatever style you end up with Rollins, and Contraine should be given serious study

  • @sopwithcamels266 I mean no offense, but if they taught you everything shouldn't you know how to spell Coltrane's name properly? Just sayin! Aside from that I love Coltrane and Rollins! Great players!

  • That tone is better than a $10,000 japanese hooker

  • @BULLshitBen Wow man, that's a great description... You are my hero now...!

  • @BULLshitBen : the last $10K Nippon hooker I met didn't need a tone....

  • @BULLshitBen how do u know that??

  • @BULLshitBen wtf are u thinking ben semel who goes to palos verdes high school and plays on the baseball team and is a super cool kid whos white and wears plaid/stripes every day?

  • @BULLshitBen-you should keep that stuff on the downlow Benny.

  • @BULLshitBen Thats cuz japanese hookers suck

  • @iddtelyoubut are you saying sonny rollins has bad tone?

  • badass name

  • Sonny Rollins is truly a great sax player! Ι saw him performing last night in Athens, Greece and that was an ingredible and unforgetable experience! He truly rocks!

  • A true master of his profession and a joy to the world with his music.....

I am glad that I was fortunate to meet him live several times in New York and play with his band ...!

God Bless Sonny Rollins ..... my true mentor

  • Сонни Роллинс - мега саксофонист!!!!

  • This drummer is beast!!!!! Sonny isn't bad either...

  • this is the real deal great cover

  • What a blessing that this man is still on two legs.

    FANTASTIC!

  • @chaplinconspiracy I know. He used to have three!

  • Oh My Goodness..!!thank God he is coming to Greece!

  • Sonny Rollins=LEGEND.

  • Omfg I want Sonny Rollins to be my grandad.

  • The drummer is laying down such a swinging beat, he and Sonny play so well off of each other the WHOLE solo through!

  • Sonny still has that swing man! Jazzmen never get old... just better!!! Gotta love it!!

  • steve jordan lays down such a heavy groove in this tune. awesome!

  • my dad likes your music.

  • waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat

who said the drummers off? whoever said that could be more wrong, this drummer couldnt be playing any better

  • @LTdrumma couldN´T be more wrong.. :)

  • Jazz is not a bunch of wrong notes. a true jazz musician would tell you the opposite. If your not playing in the right key and following along with the chord changes you can make any jazz solo sound like crap. Musicians like sonny rollins are pure geniuses! Love the jazz and appreciate it!! haha

  • @funnyman93618 actually, that bit about solos is true for most types of music.

  • @funnyman93618 now it is good to follow that but blue notes and chromaticism are not at all bad things if used correctly. any jazz bass player will tell u that going chromatic is an important thing to know. very very key to jazz those things.

  • Not the sonny im used to hearing

  • @saxoholic425 That's because this is Sonny doing Lester.

  • I love how animated he is on stage xD It's kinda funny

  • That's Some Good Majik

  • Thanks

  • happy birthday dude!

  • Wicked... "jazz is a lots of wrong notes" - Nigel Tufnel

  • I love this guy. I could so imagine going to my favorite bars listening to this. Atleast I'd really love to. lol Smooth yet arousing, Calm yet swingy. Very well done in my opinion. :)

  • GREAT!!

  • GREAT!!!

  • That's a pretty big tenor sax O.o

  • @Scariestkiller maybe hes just a little short...

  • @pebblefrog196

    O.O ...

  • @Scariestkiller Tenor saxophones are made like that, a lot bigger than an alto.

  • @TheWoogie2

Yeah I'm new to the sax world haha

  • @Scariestkiller Haha, me too, I do a bunch of research.

  • @TheWoogie2

That's good lol I barely gonna be learning to play the sax so i decided to look up on jazz.

  • @Scariestkiller You came to the right place! SoRo is killer!

  • Rollins is a legend!! I have two spare tickers to see him live at a sold out concert on 20/11/10. For more information go to gumtree and type in sonny rollins tickets

  • wadda feeling!!!

  • it's grat to still have rollins

    and still playing

    that is just great!

  • forgotten collection ;-p

  • That horn has kept Sonny strong and healthy all these years.

The man is the exact opposite of bullshit.

I'm 61 and I want to be Sonny Rollins when I grow up.

  • @pyannaguy Ha! The Sonny is what kept the horn going all these years, and it joins him in that healthy dance! Many, many dropped the horn that would have kept them healthy, in your logic, due to inner struggles. The human grabs the horn and out comes his attitude about life!

  • @pyannaguy So you mean.... Cow vomit!

Sorry, had to say that. I do agree though that this guy is AMAZING! I love Sonny Rollins. One of the best.

  • @pyannaguy well I am 73 and still tootn

  • @fathersaturn Trane definatly had more technique then Sonny but I think Sonny puts more soul into his horn and thats what makes him swing so hard. Tranes better at technique and Sonny is better at soul. You can't really compare them when they get that good though.

  • wish I was there!

  • This solo is a real hommage to Lester Young from 0:24 on.

  • @joemaranzano I'd say more from 0:59 onwards - I recognise some of those licks from Jazz at the Philharmonic with Nat King Cole. This is simply superb. Then again man, one could say all jazz saxophonists are playing homage to lester Young when they play. He's sure to have inspired a great many of the leading players.

  • nice beard

  • he looks like popeyes dad wit shades

  • bleaaarkk! dis is jazz? or blazz?

    Rab

  • steve jordan on durms?

  • Just saw him tonight.

  • He's one of my favorite sax players!! do you think he's better than John Coltrane???
