  • Love this song so much

  • it reminds me 20 years ago ... thanks a lot for sharing this ...

  • Tony Banks might have been the brains of Genesis, but Mike Rutherford (who wrote this extraordinarily beautiful track) was definitely the heart. There's such emotion in his writing.

  • This is a fantastic song, beautiful. How this could be a B-side. Unbelievable. How can you take this gem off an album. Absolute genius.

  • So many magical songs in this period...beautiful.

  • a superb song..........

  • My hopes are as the leaves upon the water - just sunk in the night. And though I know you couldn't care, you oughtta - the end of a life.

  • un tema eterno.....un rayo de luz en el génesis de la creación....

  • A masterpiece.

  • sheer beauty, awesomely perfect! Thank you so much for sharing

  • of ANYBODY could upload or email "Evidence of Autumn" I'd be most appreciative! Miss these days when bonus cuts were the reward for supporting a single ; )

  • Fantastic song. Makes me smile and cry at the same time, if that's possible.

  • @FenderBender2112 Amen! well said ! This song is SO emotionally inspiring:chills, tears.and smiles because of God's wondrous LOVE thru his gifts of Music, boy Rutherford really hit a Home-run here,eh?!!

  • "Stand in the sun, shut your eyes and feel the World, it's changing every day.. Goodbye my love... " this, for me, is about knowing that you have to leave someone, someone you love, and who loves you, because you both know it has come to an end.. and you must let each other go in order to move on, and start again.. it reminds me so much of my ex wife..

  • this is the song when love ends.......

but dont forget love will comes back.....

  • It's about a dog. That's why he calls him the master.

  • This song...I love it...yet it's so sad...

  • please don t cry because is just fore crying good...............

  • Who's the Master???

  • @daonfpe look it up on Wikipedia....there is a whole page on what "Suppers Ready " is about, but Peter's music was alot more complex with Genesis

  • amazing sad song......Genesis.....for ever !!!

  • i am a fan of Genesis since 20 years, and everytime i'm listening to this sing, tears are coming.... simply beautiful, and very sad.

  • Such a sad song

  • Anybody got a tab for this

  • simply fantastic.

  • Lovely song, reminds me a bit of "Blood On The Rooftops" in places. Should have been on Duke in place of "Alone Tonight."

  • the more you listen the more you like , superb

  • I wish this song was commercially released on one of their albums. It never really made it to any album I know of and I'm a huge Genesis fan.

  • @ladyjerrico It made it to side four of Three Sides Live.

  • This could easily be off Genesis to Revelation. Yes I know the poisoned bald dwarf hadn't joined at this point, but you know what I mean. Beautiful none the less. It annoys me how good Phil Collins really is as I can't stand the smchalzty ballad writing twat.

  • the song...

  • This song reminds me of Dr.Who, there's a character called The Master in that story, but I don't think the song has any connection to the Dr.Who series.

  • @LonesomeTroubadour it might just be!!! some other youtube song /post had one of Tony's solo songs as being Dr. Who influence, so....

  • great song from a great era.

  • can anyone explain to me what this song means ....Thanks

  • @jennmooney It talks about life (better, "lives", in the vision of oriental religions. The open door represents our lifetime, only a moment in the limitless time and space of the infinite universes (there are so many...), in which we fall in love and make experience of many things that appear to us so real...but when The Master calls for us again...we have to go, another time, another life. Still Love remains inside of us, just the memory of that open door...Excuse me because of my poor English.

  • This era was so special to me as far as Genesis was concerned. You had "Vancouver", "Evidence of Autumn" and this one in just 2 years of each other. And each should have been on the LP's instead of being B-sides! Very Emotional and heartfelt songs.

  • Actually this song reminds me of a book called Bid Time Return.

  • @Rushthatspeaks They made a movie about this, it's called "Somewhere in Time" staring Christopher Reeve.

  • @ladyjerrico I know the movie. It's one of my favorites. This song really reminds me of the book version though coz I was really listening to this album a lot when I read that book.

  • @Rushthatspeaks ah ok. I never read the book, but I have the collector's editon of the movie. I'm just an all around Genesis fanatic, I've heard this song a bunch of times, it reminds me of a relationship I was once in myself.

  • This is such a great song. Its good to hear it again after so many years. Thank you!

  • Glad this song was finally posted! Thanks so much.

  • Who's the master? What is Phil Collins singing about being a slave? lol.

  • @Rushthatspeaks we are slaves to this world. i think the writer is looking to stay in a utopian wold of his everlasting Love

  • @TheFilthyRags I always interpreted this song as someone dying and going to Heaven, hence the "Open Door".

  • @SPeacock Yeah... it's someone saying goodbye...I saw someone passing away and the last thing they see, is the last time they saw their loved one.

  • @Indigite99 I'm surprised it didn't make it onto the album.

  • @SPeacock Actually, that song was original on the "Three-sides Live" album when it was released in North America back in 1982. Four sides because back then, CDs did not exist !! It was strickly vinyl record (LP) or 4-track cassettes ! The album had 3 sides of (excellent) live recordings. The fourth side had 5 studio tracks: 1.Paperlate 2.You Might Recall 3.Me and Virgil 4.Evidence of Autumn 5.Open Door. A very touching track I was pleased to hear again ! Thanks for posting it

  • @Rushthatspeaks I somehow used to think it was refering to that guy in California who calls himself the Black Pope.

  • This song has a very special meaning to me, a beautiful composition.

  • I ADORE THIS SONG. Possibly Mike's best Genesis effort. So touching. Thanks for posting!
