I can't tell you how grateful we are for your films - our local Singer repair man has stopped servicing anything more than 30 years old, and you've helped me sort out my grandmother's 1930 model, and now we feel confident about embarking on the 1908 treadle,in working order, but stiff and filthy. What I love about them is that they're so beautiful, and actually WORK!
Thank you for your kind words! It is precisely because it is so difficult to find anyone to service or repair machines that I started working on them myself. I am always delighted to hear from people who have been able to revive old machines, especially when they are machines that have been in the family for years.
Hello Muv! I have rehomed an old Singer and the tension adjuster nut is stuck and can only be moved with a pair of pliers. Have you ever come across that? I haven't cleaned it up yet but the metal flanges seem to be too wide for the nut. Any ideas welcome! x
Hello Wufnstuff Often screws and nuts are stiff because they haven't been touched for years. Make sure you protect the nut with a cloth when you remove it with pliers so you don't damage the metal. Clean the screw thoroughly because it is likely that it is covered with a residue of oil and dirt. Then put a tiny amount of oil on the screw when you replace the nut, and work the nut back and forth along the screw a few times to ease it. If that doesn't work, let me know.
Thank you so much for the videos. I recently recieved a family heirloom machine from my husbands side of the family. It hadn't been used in years. Although its not the same machine it was simular enough for me to use this video to get the machine tension set and how to thread it. It sews beautiful. I also had to replace belt and bobbin rubber wheel. Your videos made me brave enough to do it. Thank you so much.
Hello SquarePegMusic, Absolutely delighted to hear from you, and so pleased to hear that you have been able to restore a family heirloom back into working order!
I inherited my Gran's Franklin 'Scarab' machine, and was delighted to find your video. I disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled the machine (which hadn't been used in decades and decades), and was without a clue as to how to begin using it, as the manual has long since been lost. With help from you, this wonderful old machine has sewn it's first stitches in a very very long time. My Gran would no doubt be very proud. Many many thanks!

Hello @22brianclark, Nice to hear from you and we are very pleased you have found this video helpful. It often happens in families that only grandmother knows how to use a machine. What a lovely grandmother you have! You will have to make something for her on the machine.
Hello BaylissandSaunders, I've just had a quick look at your blog. Best of luck with your restoration project - it's great to see an old machine being brought back to life!
Hi I run a small retoration shop (non-profit) and I am trying to generate some interest in a blog I have started about a singer 29k15 which is the current project. As I think the old singers are by far the best machines. Just incase anyone is interest how they go together. northants-restoration.blogspot.com
Hello Jojo, Delighted to hear that you have enjoyed the video. Congratulations on taking the plunge and actually staring to sew. Why shouldn't men sew? Nothing wrong with being a tailor!
Its always helpfull for people like you to show us (men ) how to opereate these beautiful machines..I never knew I had it in me to actually sew, and becoming good at it. I just bought a simular machine ,and on the process of restoring it. Your video was very helpful and thanks for the bobbin tention process..
Hello Pati, Thanks for your extra tip - it's always handy to know another way to check the tension.
Yes, the machine is gorgeous. I only bought it last month and took the gamble of setting the tension and trying it out for the first time on camera. Luckily it worked perfectly, otherwise there would have been no video for Youtube!
The decal on the bed of the machine is the Indian Star, which means that it was manufactured for export to India. How it came back here is a mystery...
Great video and gorgeous machine. I also check the tension by sewing on the diagonal, AKA bias, for about 4 inches, removing it from the machine carefully to avoid pulling the threads and then pulling the fabric evenly making sure I have the fingers on each hand on the end of the stitch line. The threads should break at about the same time if the tension is right. Thanks for creating these informative videos.
thanx alot
