I'm no expert- yet- but I have the distinct impression the pianist isn't listening or responding at all. He's just playing as if he's by himself. Bela's even looking at the guy (and he usually doesn't take his eyes off his fretboard), but the guy gives no indication that he's aware of anyone else's presence.
Isn't the high G string basically useless in these jazz meanderings, I don't think he played it more than a few times. Might as well use a 4 string plectrum banjo. And with all those pompous musical snobs in that room, he probably felt a bit out of his element here.
yea but like he said its hard to go in cold ie chat for 15 between blows if they where playing flat out it would develop alot sooner it takes a while before its there,i can take the good out of watching this, its kinda like the start of a show before relaxing but every 15 minutes i think they did ok no?
Though I like Bela Fleck, this is very uninspired improvisation from both he and Porter. They set jazz back about 1,000 years with their lack of creativity in this session. I don't even play the banjo or piano, and I could hit these insipid succession of notes in an attempt to make it sound like real music, and fail as miserably as they do!
hey it's magnefique job . me too i hope do this but i don't have money to buy the banjo , can you send me one because you have a lot money there in US , thanx
Pianist is a great player. And a terrible ensemble player.

I thought the jazz peice was pretty cool on Bela's end. Listen him with a piano player like Chick Corea, and you'll hear something totally different.

Such a deep and universal musician with such a sad piano player and ego centered person

@banjopathe I don't know if that is true at all... Bela's classical piece was sloppy as can be!
