strange i wonder what happens to change a boy with so much fun in his eyes into a man with so many problems ,you either fit in with with others or you don,t i would have loved to have met nick i know what its like .
We had the wonderful experience of attending the Nick Drake tribute concert in Melbourne last night-14Nov2011-wonderful and evocative and a tribute to the many artists that performed. Wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone!
Eight people don't have a word to show what may be done, have never heard a way to find the sun, haven't seen the land living by the breeze, can't understand a light among the trees, can not recall all that they have known, and will fall when the light has flown. Basically they just don't know the way.
@ronelas1 if your just saying that because of the piano line being the main part , no , nicks songs are guitar driven, intricate tunings/timings , none of which cold play possess, I would have to say cold play is a pop version of radiohead
Don’t you have a word to show what may be done Have you never heard a way to find the sun Tell me all that you may know Show me what you have to show Won’t you come and say If you know the way to blue? Have you seen the land living by the breeze Can you understand a light among the trees Tell me all that you may know Show me what you have to show Tell us all today If you know the way to blue?
Sus canciones tenían un tono confesional y torturado, a las que la cálida voz de Drake y su original forma de tocar la guitarra dotaban de una extraña belleza.
non voglio un funerale in chiesa: crematemi e spargete le mie ceneri nel Tirreno non prima di aver fatto riecheggiare i tre minuti di way to the blue. chiedo tanto?
@mattgrubbles to me this represents not only Nick and his music but as well as the human existence. This is a great example of expressing how our deep inner emotions operate. The sadness we feel and the extraordinary beauty that can be found inside of it.
I love this song, but there was also another version featuring the violin that I can't find anymore. I'll keep looking, but does anyone have that version on youtube?
@dragonheart8706 The song you're talking about is the one which is on the album Five Leaves Left, the original one. You can find it on related video on the right (check for "Way to Blue Nick Drake from the album five leaves left" and you'll be contented ;)
Some may know and some not...If you wonder how a musician such as Nick Drake created a flurry of timeless pieces...then disappears. Why his music is haunting...troubled...his work done as if he's calling out from some respite in his depth of sorrow. and how...in his music...you hear him ...slip then slide..then dissappear back to those depths....like a drowning man.
Joey came to him thousands of times. One day he couldn't take it anymore.
It's very moving to see those pictures, especially the ones at 0:36, that give the impression to see him in movement, almost look towards our direction
There is a hope there which lies behind the sadness. A true plea to our emotional understanding and plight :) Blessed is he who can encapsulate that and also do it the utmost justice :) RIP Nick Drake
not all of us see that bright blue sky, and shiny warm light. everything is not always what we want I just wish we had someone or someway to to keep going on.
Depression is a crippling illness, it comes and goes, when it has you in its grip it seems it will last forever. Nick Drake's music is sublimely lovely and sometimes the lyrics seem to refer to sadness. I find it all but impossible to communicate in any way when I am in the depths of depression, only afterwards and before can I find an outlet for the thoughts and feelings I have. Nick Drake's music would have been different if hadn't been depressive, but it would still have been amazing!
The Early Spring Flower which blooms so beautifully and it lives until the cold comes and the beautiful flower is frozen forever...Such a outstanding nature and such a life and such an end...Nick to me reminds me of the flower which lives so desperately to cling to life and he is frozen by the cold cruel world...Either way i cant forget such a souls work...I cannot forget such a life with so many sorrows as myself... And his face...It resembless myself...I wish life would be easier for souls...
yes, he was depressed but, those medicines, in that time were so very easy to take too many. Just 2 or 3 extra would, if mixed with a sleeping pill, would cause death! They still make and use those medicines now just not as frequently as before! They are in the trycyclic(sp) family! If you really are depressed the one thing you want is to sleep!
My point: give the guy and his family a break. We don't know it was suicide. Enjoy what he left behind!!!
@MikeNC2371 it's the same intention and result. He was in some type of pain and he took pills to make it stop, I sure he would have liked it to be permanent the only thing debatable is if he meant to lose his heart beat in it.
My point: we don't know it wasn't. I do very much doubt his family would come here in search of his music much less reassurances that it was an accident. among the things he left behind was the question itself, it's not for you to quiet it.
Me again....sorry for sounding so sanctimonious re last post.. All of us appreciate the extra mystery & lets face it ,morbid fascination, when someone brilliant pops their clogs too early...myths & legends are made of this. I think i got my knickers in a twist because I'm a bit in love with Nicko. But I still stand by what I said re many wonderful people dying too soon & nobody really caring.
Doesnt bluesy folk by its very nature comprise the elements of sadness/loss. Nick's demise wasnt remotely romantic, it happens to 1000's of people every day, many of them equally gifted but sadly their talents are forgotten in the mists of time. Dont put his enigmatic status first & foremost. Celebrate his beautiful soulful musical legacy .
From Nicks first album from the time he was still I believe at Cambidge..even then his mature, soul searching music is magical, another album I have thanx to itunes... I was busy bein a mum when he passed, a son in 74 (who also admires nicks work now...another generation) daughter in 75. Sad he has gone but he leaves these memories. rip nick thanx...........
@rabbit247allways Buy the 'Family Tree' CD - a terrific mix of Nick's demos, his mother Molly's songs and early recordings of Drake with Robert Kirby.
I've got no idea who Nick Drake is but unlike countless others I'm not going to start calling him a genius just because he's dead, I find it tasteless and sycophantic. I do like this and I thought it was sung very well but what do I know!
@rtbvwerg I don't think of him as a genius because he's dead...I think of him as an artistic genius because to me he was. His music is just beautiful and stands the test of time.
@rtbvwerg sycophanitc, one using flattery to gain favors? By calling him a genius what favors would you be seeking to gain? He is considered and known to be a genius in his lyrics, music, phrasing, timing, guitar style and all this in his early twenties.Yes you can call him a genius.Just listen to his music and you wont be able to say you have heard that sound before anywhere. He is unique and a musical teasure.A diamond that was overlooked in his lifetime.
@kittycat32393 Yes, I knew his biography. He was a great artist but he suffered from depression. But without his depression I think he could never compose this beautiful music.
@deepenhancer As you can learn from biographers and family's statements, NIck Drake wasn't a life-long-depressive person. If you link the value of his work to his mental health problems at the end of the life, you would be underestimating the composer, the songwriter, the poet, the musician, all his work.
@kittycat32393 The cause of Nick Drake's death has been in dispute for years. Although the official conclusion, it's known that one of the three prescribed medicines he was taking, Tryptisol, itself, could cause him to have heart failure, still considering that the side effects of that antidepressant were to knock anyone out. It helped to sleep and an extra dosage could cause death. By those times none knew how dangerous could be that medicine. Nick said to have no intention for sucide.
@lumiere1955 I'm just stating information given. Either way, none of us knew him personally or lived in his had, so NO ONE knows his intentions. He WAS depressed, there IS a possibility that he did intend suicide
@kittycat32393 I understand your thought but I keep believeing that any theory about that is actually especulation.
Unfortunately a legend and a myth were created around his death leading people to especulate and take Nick Drake as the patron saint of the depressed, junkie and other titles not less awful and untrue.
Instead, we have a sensible artist with masterpieces left for us to love and admire.
its obnoxious when people compare elliott smith to nick drake. as much as i enjoy elliott smiths music, nick drake wasn't an overrated cry baby....not to mention the fact that it's like comparing apples to oranges musically. They're both dead, i'll give you kids that much . . .
@stillill586 They're both folk artists, but that's not where the similarities end, yes Drake is vastly superior to Smith in many ways, I shall list some of them, Nick Drake is a better guitar player, lyricist, and has a much cooler name.
Now here are where I will list how they are similar, both were extremely depressed, and both were into drugs, as is obvious they are both folk artists.
Nice family pics. They must be very precious for the Drake family. A privilege to see them when I am a great fan of his lovely songs. Thanks.Bob Cole.
No offence to anyone here, but I can't help but notice a certain romanticism about Drake and it really bugs me or "tragedy". I really disagree because most of you are getting upset about someone you think you know but don't. Surely its better to be glad Drake made 3 amazing albums, another post humosly I think, than to atate of "tragic" it all is hat he died in the way he did.
The romanticism and mythos false magic surrounding a talented but very fragile man, real magic is in the songs-real.
the sadness in watching this is the fact that we know of the talent that is too come from this little boy, that is so tragically cut short and the hurt, pain and mental anguish, that we know that he will have to go through. Rest in peace Nick.
An old fave of mine...i discovered Nick through the Antilles Sampler (99cents) in the early '70s. Stunned by the video...it's wonderful...i'm at a loss...
@FleshTorturer Agreed, I don't think he would ever be in the right time, but I'm glad that what he showed the world is still being very much appreciated by later generations.
Can i just ask why a couple of people have commented that they find this video creepy? I find it beautful. The contrast between seeing images of Nick as a young carefree, happy, and innocent child set to the contrast of his later troubled, and dark mind leave me filled with emotion.
The other one is the original I think, well, at any rate, it's the most famous one, and the one that appears usually in his published works. This one is sweepingly beautiful though and I often go back to it when I over-listen to the other one :)
wow, this is a really cool video. i like the clips and pics of him; they're really nice.

He was a great man, his albums didn't sell while he was alive and he spent his last years in a hermit in his parents house in England.
Had he lived long, i think he would without a doubt, have many more fans than he did then
kittycat32393 1 year ago
@kittycat32393 Yes, I knew his biography. He was a great artist but he suffered from depression. But without his depression I think he could never compose this beautiful music.
deepenhancer 1 year ago
@deepenhancer As you can learn from biographers and family's statements, NIck Drake wasn't a life-long-depressive person. If you link the value of his work to his mental health problems at the end of the life, you would be underestimating the composer, the songwriter, the poet, the musician, all his work.
lumiere1955 1 year ago
@lumiere1955 His deep depression began after the fiasco of his second album. That's for sure.

@kittycat32393 I actually think the mystique and legacy he left behind helped him get more fans in my opinion.

@playswithpassion Lol well it's the same thing xD

@kittycat32393 The cause of Nick Drake's death has been in dispute for years. Although the official conclusion, it's known that one of the three prescribed medicines he was taking, Tryptisol, itself, could cause him to have heart failure, still considering that the side effects of that antidepressant were to knock anyone out. It helped to sleep and an extra dosage could cause death. By those times none knew how dangerous could be that medicine. Nick said to have no intention for sucide.
lumiere1955 1 year ago
@lumiere1955 I'm just stating information given. Either way, none of us knew him personally or lived in his had, so NO ONE knows his intentions. He WAS depressed, there IS a possibility that he did intend suicide
kittycat32393 1 year ago

They're both dead, i'll give you kids that much . . .
stillill586 1 year ago
@stillill586 I agree essentially but....Lets just hope that some listening to this are "kids".....that is a victory in itself.....
kkrans09 1 year ago
@stillill586 They're both folk artists, but that's not where the similarities end, yes Drake is vastly superior to Smith in many ways, I shall list some of them, Nick Drake is a better guitar player, lyricist, and has a much cooler name.
Now here are where I will list how they are similar, both were extremely depressed, and both were into drugs, as is obvious they are both folk artists.

Nick Drake is incomparable. Sorry, Nick Drake is ONE.
rickzters 1 year ago
the sadness in watching this is the fact that we know of the talent that is too come from this little boy, that is so tragically cut short and the hurt, pain and mental anguish, that we know that he will have to go through. Rest in peace Nick.

I find it hard to watch these Nick Drake videos with his beautiful songs and footage of him as a kid. Makes me want to cry.

There is another version of this song, with strings instead of piano. Wich one is the original?
destihado1 2 years ago
The other one is the original I think, well, at any rate, it's the most famous one, and the one that appears usually in his published works. This one is sweepingly beautiful though and I often go back to it when I over-listen to the other one :)
Thanks so much for posting by the way!

Don't you have a word to show what may be done,
Have you never heard, a way to find the sun?
Tell me all that you may know,
Show me, what you have to show.
Tell us all the way, if you know the way to blue.
